Stumbled across this while googling Albie Swartz. (Googling because I saw Albie listed as a Newsday All-LI team and SJU wasn’t listed as a choice.)
Never knew Carmine Calzonetti hitchhiked across Europe.

Lou Carnesecca has a face that was-not so much molded as anvilled. Everything there is sharp and craggy, much like the Apennine cliffs of Tuscany, from whichvault.si.com
What a great article! Thanks for posting. That team with Warren, Depre, Abraham, Paultz & Calzonetti with Smythe & Cornelius off the bench was one of my all time favorite Johnnie teams. John Warren was a wonderful, understated college player.Stumbled across this while googling Albie Swartz. It is a great article. It brought back great memories at a time when I was a student at St. John's. I believe back then, the St. John's bench was in front of Section 2. For the time I was at St. John's I always got season tickets right behind the bench, usually in the second row nearer to half court. I can attest Louie always put on a show and Coach Kresse was a man of great patience! What a great article! Thanks for posting. It was Section 2 then they moved the benches to the other side fot the 1987-88 season. Actually flipped the fans as well since Coach C. wanted to keep the same familiar faces behind him. So I moved from Section 2 CC 19-20 to Section 8 CC 1-2. Now I'm back in CC albeit in Section 3.It is a great article. It brought back great memories at a time when I was a student at St. John's. And I have the stubs to prove it!
Don't have the stubs to prove it but I pretty sure I was right behind you in DD 1-4. The Maven was right across from me in section 3. Didn't care for the switch as the seats changed to closer to the wall, no aisle seat. Think the Pep Band took over part of our section. Fitst time I am hearing why we were moved. It was Section 2 then they moved the benches to the other side fot the 1987-88 season. Joe Depre? He was inducted into.the SJU HOF a few years ago.Dupre, another former Net.
I probably shouldn't be offended by the ethnic stereotyping, but I am.Stumbled across this while googling Albie Swartz. (Googling because I saw Albie listed as a Newsday All-LI team and SJU wasn’t listed as a choice.)

He went to Westbury high schoolJoe Depre? He was inducted into.the SJU HOF a few years ago.
I believe he went to Hempstead HS.
What he said.Excuse the infamous "what if" but "what if" Coach Lapchick wasn't forced to retire at the age of 65 and was able to recruit Lew Alcindor and Alcindor played three for St. John's? I think the statistics would lean heavenly towards Coach Lapchick. Don't get me wrong. I love Louie Carnesseca. He became the head coach when I was a freshman. He made me a big St. John's fan. But I think the nod has to go to Joe Lapchick over Lou Carnesseca.
