Excuse the infamous "what if" but "what if" Coach Lapchick wasn't forced to retire at the age of 65 and was able to recruit Lew Alcindor and Alcindor played three for St. John's? I think the statistics would lean heavenly towards Coach Lapchick. Don't get me wrong. I love Louie Carnesseca. He became the head coach when I was a freshman. He made me a big St. John's fan. But I think the nod has to go to Joe Lapchick over Lou Carnesseca.
I agree there is more than credible evidence
that Kareem a/k/a Alcindor was pretty well locked up by Lapchick . Until , the University used his age 65 as Mandatory Retirement .
Then it blew up in our faces .
Joe was a HOF player on the Original Celtics back in the day . So he made the Hall as a player
Louie was a no hit , good glove 2nd Baseman in his career .
Didn’t seem to be much of a Basketball player . Too short ..
It doesn’t really matter trying to decide who’s the better Coach . Leave it at they were both , great .
Both Lou and Joe were Player’s Coaches . Loved by all those they Coached at St John’s .
And, Lapchick was revered by both , Coach Knight and Coach K .
Both Lou and Joe were treated like Saints by the NY Media .
