RIP Coach Carnesecca

Of all the things this beautiful man will be remembered for, there is this: he disproved one of the most cynical maxims in New York sports—“Nice guys finish last.” He was a saint, and he didn’t finish last. He finished first, not by shaming or brow-beating his players, but by inspiring them. RIP, Coach….

Sad news indeed. We've lost a true gentleman and a good man.

Like many of the old-timers around here, I have my own memories of Coach Carnesecca from my time on campus. He was friendly, kind and welcoming to all students. As a young man, I didn't know what a rare, generous and special guy he was.

Rest in peace, Coach...and thank you for everything you gave to St. John's.

Lou Carnesecca, St. John's legendary coach, dies at 99 Carnesecca was held in exalted status as a New York sports institution, widely sought out and paid respect by colleagues.

One month shy (January 6th).
Jan 5th. My daughter's birthday. Once, at the 25 anniversary celebration of the Final 4, at MSG, I introduced her to coach by telling coach the two shared a birthday. He then spent the next ten minutes treating her as if she was the celebrity, asking her many questions about her life completely interested in who she is. Great moment. My daughter recollected just now that coach signed a mini basketball for her that night.

Every year on his birthday, someone would wish Coach the Italian birthday greeting Cent' Anni - one hundred years, a wish for a long and happy life.

So close Looie, so close RIP.

RIP Coach. Louie was always so nice whenever I had a chance to meet him. He was friendly with my grandparents and whenever he saw me he always asked how my grandmother was even though it had been about 15 years since she went to her last game. Rest in peace coach. A true gem of a man.
