RIP Coach Carnesecca

My favorite photo of Lou.

Louie was St Johns. A sad day a real legend was happy to meet him in the mid 1990’s after he retired and had a long conversation about sju vs Michigan at the time, i was a 19 or 20 yr undergraduate student and he treated me like we were long lost friends, what a great man. Matt Brust credits him for giving him much needed confidence after things didnt work out for him at UNC. So many other stories out there of all the young men he shaped over the years.

RIP Coach “Non Scholae Sed Vitae”

So sad to hear. God rest your soul.

Pitino's tweet from earlier today makes sense now.

Unrelated. Looks like Rick lost someone else close to him.

Confirmed on X.

When I was in HS 1987 Looie was looking at two kids from Holy Cross. I went and said hello and he was as nice as anyone could possibly be. We chatted about St Johns. I asked him what he thought of the star of the HC team, he put his arm around my shoulder and said "he is a tough kid". One of my favorite celebrity meets of my life.

RIP

My grandparents loved him (as he was Italian) and heard his name since I was a kid in early 80's before I really followed team

I've posted this before but it stuck with me

My best memory is my first interaction. It was '95. He was not coach at this point but still active. I was new to team manager role for baseball team. Coach Russo asked me to deliver a bunch of different manila envelopes & stuff to a few different people in Alumni Hall. Didn't fully know my way around and who was where. I'm walking and Lou walks by and sees i was needing help. He introduces himself, asks me my name and where I'm trying to get to and welcomes me to St. John's and points me in right direction. Never forgot that.

He was truly a joy!!!

Kind, funny, quick-witted, with a big-picture perspective that was always rooted in what was fundamentally good!

The couple of times I talked to him he could not have been any nicer!

You can't think of St. John's basketball without thinking of Lou Carnesecca.

The icon of icons!!

For me, I am pretty sad that he did not make it to his milestone 100th birthday because he was so close. (Short by just 36 days).

That said, he was larger than life and leaves behind a legacy of greatness that will live on for many years!

RIP Coach, they broke the mold when they made you!
