Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Can we get confirmation if that photo was 1985 or 1991? I believe that logo came out in late 80s.

I believe that the only time the team went to Europe in the 80’s and 90’s was summer of 85. I can’t remember the team going in the 90’s.

Taquan Dean played for me during the Spring and Summer of 2001. The Panthers were the best team in the country that year, won all of the Adidas tournaments, 3 Stripes at Hofstra, Big Time in Las Vegas, and Double Pump in LA. Darryl Hill and Taquan were the guards, Curtis Sumpter and Charlie Villaneuva were the forwards, Jason Fraser was in the middle. On the bench were Tim Doyle, Marvin McCullough, Aubin Scott, and Mike Claxton.

Taquan is a very nice, respectable young man. He had a nice career playing overseas.

After listening to that and the Siva interview you could see why some kids may not choose to play for Pitino, however the players that do will know what is expected of them, coach cares and he won't accept less than your best effort.

Team went to Europe in May/June of 1991 as well. Sergio Luyk homecoming in Spain.
91-That might have been the trip when Asst AD Richard Laskowski got robbed by gypsies on the streets of Madrid…took all his cash and passport. What a nightmare. That photo of Carmine Dante and LoBalbo was ‘91 then. Where ever the team stayed or ate, Carmine would introduce himself to the owner and helped with the menus. Then the team went to Bologna where Carnesecca commandeered all the team travel trunks and loaded them up with fine Italian wine and liquors like Amaretto and Sambucca for the trip home. He reached out to Chris Mullin’s father at Customs at JFK to let him know of our arrival…whoosh right through customs!

The ‘85 trip the team went to Madrid, Toledo, Malaga and Valencia and Florence. Players bought tons of Gucci right from the factory there. The coaches visited the gold shops on the Ponte Vecchio bridge, and the Italian National Coach set them up with huge discounts. Coaches Rollie Massamino and Jimmy Valvano and their wives met the team in Florence as the Nike International Coaches clinic was being held the same time as the team was playing. Everyone stayed at a beautiful hotel called Villa La Masa. Built in the 13th century as an enchanting country house for an aristocratic Florentine family, Villa La Massa was owned by European aristocrats until 1948, before it was transformed into a luxury hotel. Louie was in his glory hanging with Rollie and Valvano each day and night. What a bill they rang up 👀

Visited there last year! Wish the National,Parks Service didn’t rush you off Fort Sumter after only 40 minutes. Did a 5 day trip following the 13th NJ (my home unit in Essex County, NJ) from Atlanta to Savannah to Charleston
