Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Just anecdotally by checking Ticketmaster the sales dont look great. Top 25 team, Pitino vs Pitino, Giants on bye week. It seems like a game that should have good attendance. On the flip side some of my buddies who will go to a couple games a year hardly know college basketball has started and usually attend big east games.

Not trying to stir the pot but how long before he's had enough? This school just doesn't have a strong sports fan base mentality.

We have to win first. If we stay ranked throughout the season attendance will improve every game. If we make a Sweet 16 run this season and have a strong team next year, attendance will not be an issue. You can’t just erase 20 years of poor performance. If we had made the tournament last year and won a game I think attendance would different already this year.

It's not Duke or Kentucky or Kansas or Michigan State. It's NYC with plenty of other things to spend money on. But we claim to be a very large catholic university with so many alums and most are like the post above not knowing season started or not even knowing Pitino is coach. Sure if we win like that year with Lavin the crowds will come. And maybe thats all we will ever be. A what have you done for me in the moment crowd. Not consistent.

And I don't agree about watching a coach's son. Its a story matchup. NY favorite Rick Pitino against his son. The problem is all around. Part people, part market, part price I'm sure, part school and lack of marketing.

Just sad when our coach has to whine there aren't enough ticket sales. Something about it strikes me as not something he signed up for.

This is not Bowden vs Bowden when you had two traditionally good football programs with rabid fan bases and the father being at his school for ever. Quite frankly, this father/son match up has no appeal to me whatsoever and is nothing but a cheap ploy to gather interest where there is not a lot (yet).

I am tired about the whining about attendance. What did folks expect after decades of poor performance and the loss of a generation of fans. That a 70 year old coach despite his pedigree was going to wave his magic wand or play his magical pipe and fans would come out in droves. You didn’t get national recruits like Ian, Boogie or VJ right away so why expect the fans to be any different? We die hards have been burned but we are diehards (or gluttons for disappointment and punishment) but others don’t have that passion or interest.

This might not be the “show me State” like Missouri but New York definitely is a “What have you done lately” State and we haven’t done squat. A Top 25 ranking after two games might mean something to some but is that really enough to start a groundswell of interest? Not yet.

I understand you are selling the program and want the support however if you want fans Rick, win and bring in National opponents for non-league games, not a team from the overrated Mountain West.

Great post Dave.

When he finds a place he can roll out of bed, play golf, and get a car to drive him to work.

Oh, and almost forgot, as soon as he is able to convince his wife to move again. 😁
