Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

The press conference yesterday still bothers me 10x more than the actual game does. This year was always a house money type year, aim to just make the tournament and would be ecstatic with exorcising the demons of maybe winning a tournament game and finally seeing Friday night of the BET.

I had always been super confident about the future because Pitino had always been, up until yesterday. His matter of fact tone when stating that this program will "get there" despite being general coachspeak had given me confidence that Pitino's ultimate plan was coming together behind the scenes.

Could just be frustration after another loss during a rough patch but Pitino expressing doubt that he'll be able to build the culture he wants and talking about everybody leaving is more than a little unsettling to say the least. Don't think he calls it quits after a year or two or anything like that but perhaps there will be more struggles than anticipated going forward in this uber competitive league with a ton of other great coaches.

Agree with you. Always thought one of his strong points was being able to adapt to changes in all aspects of the game. He can't just say that it takes two years to learn his system and he won't have that continuity because of NIL and transfers. Needs to adjust to the new realities and make it work. I'm thinking (and hoping) he was just frustrated by yesterday's game and he will come up with the right plan.

Pitino’s got the balls the say what every coach is thinking. Well except for the cheaters like wade, Miller and company

I think the Pitino rant was pure frustration. I know I would be, seeing the team game after game getting out-hustled, not getting back on D, not digging in on D possession by possession, no grit, just not seeming to really want to do the stuff that wins. That has to be just killing him; now where that frustration leads, who knows.
But I posted when Pitino was first hired, a lot of the hype was nonsense; he has not gotten a ton of players in the NBA, he has developed teams. He has taken players and made them better year over year. He has not recruited big blue chip stars, he has coached players and teams up.
Is he starting to doubt that style can work in today’s climate? I have no idea but there is a logical progression that would make it seem possible. Many think that is why Jay Wright left, that the development of players over their first two years would just lead to them leaving for the “big bucks” after that; or turn the coach into primarily a NIL $ raiser and render you “beholding”, if you will, to the people paying the players “salaries”.
Make no mistake, the world we root in has changed dramatically, and not for the better, and one of the sad byproducts of that change could be that great coaches like Pitino and Wright go the way of the dinosaur.

Sure, but saying it after being outclassed by a rival just seems like sour grapes. Rick doesn't strike me as a whiny type, so it was a bit surprising.

Tell ya what, I don't give a crap what anyone says on here anymore about players in the portal. They can say oh he's the next MJ and I'm not going to care untilI see him on the court.

Every year people on here do hyper bowl, about oh this guy is the real deal and he avg this many pnts, and this amount of assts and boards. Then I start believing in the hype, then what happens? It's like smack smack smack I'm an idiot for believing it, can't fault them for hyping players up, it's my fault for believing without seeing.

All I can say is I hope Rick does a better job of getting players in the portal, then he did this year.
I think Rick was relying a lot on other people ‘s recommendations with respect to Dingle and Ledlum . Plus , they are local kids and he knows their parents , etc .

Many on here forget that Ledlum signed originally with Tennessee , even after being wined and dined by RP

You don’t have to be Einstein to know that Tennessee is loaded and a possible Final 4 team . Ledlum spent the early summer there, saw he wasn’t going to get the PT he wanted and raised his hand to come home .
I think he is a great kid , represents our School well and will play overseas and then , do well in the Corporate world or , maybe be President one day .
Same with Dingle , I think he’s disappointed with his season . I think Pitino is too. Thought Jordan was more player than what he’s shown . But , he’s also local and he’s a good player but , maybe not a Star in the BE .

So , we didn’t get the stud transfer player we wanted . I , like others here , believe Pitino was shocked that he didn’t get Clayton here . He envisioned Jenkins and Clayton excelling as a duo in the BE. No doubt they would have .

Next year? Pitino and this staff know they need to bring in better talent to compete with the top BE teams . I think they will get a stud froKid

Agree with everything you said.

Pitino's joke does raise real questions..

Would they players be classified as exempt or non-exempt ...salaried or hourly?

Imagine all the HR/IT type compliance videos they'll have to sit through each year.. lol

I think he should just concentrate on getting this team to play defense for a full 40 minutes
I think he has, which is the very reason his frustration bubbled over. Would have been better had he not gone there probably, but I don’t think it was caused by lack of focus on coaching, I think it was the exact opposite. There are two sides to effective learning, and I think this one is on the pupils, just my opinion.
