Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

FWIW, I believe the message he is sending is to current and future players; maybe unnecessary (or overkill) because all I have heard, and other posters have offered the same, Pitino and staff have recruited not only good players but really good people.
Finally, I think the “effort” message is clearly getting through; what some players felt was max effort was not what Pitino thought; word is Jenkins has been instrumental in making players understand coaches expectations are on another level. Very much old school “fight for and earn your minutes”.
Also it was an answer to a question posed that intimated Pitino had rode off the roster. Which, in some cases he did. Other than maybe when we play Seton Hall or Butler this line of questioning will be ending when games begin.

In another thread I mentioned that I rewatched the presser AFTER Iona lost to Yukon And BEFORE RP was hired by SJU. Daniss was on the podium and gave a very thoughtful answer about what Pitino has taught him. The answer included about fighting through adversity.

I also noticed that Daniss was the last player (Pitino was still staying to answer questions about the SJU rumors) on the stage. As he exited, he pushed the chairs in for each of his teammates who already departed the stage. Remember this was after a very difficult season ending loss. A very small thing but, I think it says something about how he conducts himself. Jenkins has some leadership qualities.

All good stuff in this interview, I hope he has a regular spot on the radio somewhere.

Two nit picks: let go of the old roster stuff, it's over with, move on, no need to throw them under the bus, plus, Cragg and compliance officer and Van M should have some accountability if players aren't going to class. I would have simply said we interviewed everyone and kept those we felt were the best fit. His answer was as if to support the arbitration with CMA. The old staff did bring in Julian a real high character, high BB quality player.

Other thing he said: we were last in the BE in Facilities. Are we really behind, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Providence, Butler in terms of facilities, maybe IDK.

He could have remarked about our longer term history other than just touching on the 80's (no mention by him of Looie), but people like Lapchick, McGuire, Buck Freeman etc. SJU is still ranked very high All Time Wins.

EVERYTHING else he said was SWEET music to my ears.

I'm tired of hearing about facilities.

Ivan Drago had roids and a treadmill. Rocky Balboa only had a goddamn mountain to climb and he kicked Drago's commie ass!

To be clear I think what they felt would look bad was buying out a coach for a VERY LARGE amount in these economic times (high inflation) would not look good for a Catholic School. Not so much the justification for firing a mediocre coach.
I think you are very wrong about that. The buzz is school tried to negotiate with CMA on a buyout, but he would not budge at all from receiving every penny of the 4 remaining years. The likelihood is that this will be litigated and there will be a significant settlement somewhere in the middle of zero and the full value of the contract, but with significant time lost and legal expense. Reality is the team played well below its capability and CMA lost control and did little to exert his authority to prevent a mutiny. In the end he gave players little reason to respect him. So now he will wait till this goes to trial however long that takes, and will likely end up with less than he would have received after legal expenses. Just my take on the matter.

I agree with hoping he gets a radio spot.
Providence has a brand new facility, Georgetown is better from what I heard, but not the Hall.

Sorry but you are going to hear about it win or lose until they do something about it. Winning will lessen the talk (and might bring in more funds for it) but they all know we must upgrade.

One other thing he mentioned in the interview was he did not know if the current NIL model is sustainable as people can donate to Collectives but the donations are not tax deductible.

I'm a big fan of the NIL in concept.

But it's not exactly the March of Dimes.

I am not sure how any if this contradicts what I wrote

Totally realistic and pragmatic.

Literally, "That's the way the ball bounces."

The other very funny thing Rick Pitino said in the interview is that when he was with the team in Greece, they were playing in Madrid and Iona's President and AD flew to Madrid to meet and offer him their coaching job....he said a few years later St. John's' President and AD "drove to Mamaroneck to meet me and offer me the job". He chuckled at that like he's said it before. [Quite a difference in miles and in expenses, I'd say.]

Boomer and Gio, repeated that line after the commercials when the interview was over, and had a good laugh over it.

I think St. John's is going to be talked about on the WFAN more than ever. You have Gio (and his mom); Brandan Tierney the radio color guy for St. John's; Tiki seems like a St. John's fan though he lives in NJ he is a New York Giant and NY area guy now.

The more publicity the better.

Tierney was the biggest Norm supporter.he better be personally driving Rick home from practices

Tierney is my wife's maiden name (no relation, he is a lot younger, but both from Bay Ridge) but I might have to have a convo with her.

He supported Norm, wow. I did not know that.
He always tries to stay positive with St. John’s but his Norm support was nauseating at the end.

If you are on a ship called the SS Norm and he’s the captain and you see an iceberg have no fear he won’t be taking a spot in the lifeboat he’s going down with the ship

That is an extremely astute observation; I could not agree more about its character revelation.

I would be very surprised if this gets to a trial. I would think SJU's insurance company will pull the plug once legal fees reach a certain amount.
