Rick Barry, Boomer & Carton.......

He made a bogus pledge at The President's Dinner in front of a thousand people in 2005

It's a little more than that. Francessa was a pain in the ass to deal with in terms of his appearance at the President's dinner. He constantly wavered, not fully committing till the last minute. He was ill prepared, choosing to adlib his comments which belied his ignorance of the current state of the University and even knew little about the then current basketball team. HE also showed up at the black tie affair in a crumpled brown suit he wore to his WFAN show. He is the original SJU alum to have the name God's Gift, only his is in his mind.  Overall, he ocntinually showed his disrepect for the university, and little allegiance to the school in any form.

I'm guessing he blew off his scholarship promise (in his mom's name) after the school went to a much better emcee, Bruce Beck.

I will flip between Boomer & Carton and MIke & Mike but rarely, if ever, tune into Francessa any longer. Just find him to be too condescending and disrepectful to the folks who pay the bills. Michael Kaye is a Yankee "homer" but is always appreciative and respectful.

Michael Kay is a terrible listen as well. He's just as full of himself as Francesa. It would be great to have a good sports talk show on the radio in the afternoon, but no such luck these days.

I agree Kay has a horrible voice & is full of himself
Kay refuses to give Don Lagreca his due as named cohost :yell:
Lupica is even worse with his prepuberty voice & bad laugh
Steve Somers is the funniest & should replace carton but has health issues with voice god speed
Richard Neer has the best voice & is very underated interviewer. Sarted out as Rock dj at wnew & is a good listen.

Don Lagreca is probably the most articulate, yet vastly underrrated sports talkie in the area

If you ever meet him at a rangers or jets game you will love how humble he is!
I met don in gerry cosby 2 yrs ago & he waited on line for his kids hockey equipment & jerseys w no complaints
That showed me he is not a primadonna like kay & fatcessa
Lagreca does a very good job on rangers & jets radio even though hes a giants & devils fan

That's good to hear. The only time I can tolerate the Kay show for more than a minute or two is when Lagreca is by himself or Kay takes a break and let's him speak. He should have his own show.

My nephew and I ran into Rick Barry at Morton's Restaurant in NYC. We had a small table in bar area. I recognized Rick, introduced myself and invited him to join us, and he did. He was alone. We proceeded to talk for an hour. He was the perfect gentleman, and simply a great guy. Not only did he remember the game in Jamaica, but recited the score, recalled he missed a last second shot from mid court that would have won it, and pointed out that they played without their point guard that night since he was ill, and had he played, in his opinion, they never would have lost to us. I was amazed that he could recall the details of that game, with the competitive fire he displayed, after such an unbelievable career in both the ABA and NBA. He spoke highly of SJU, as well as Louie, and called SJU one of the great all time college programs. If he has a bad rap with anyone, it is entirely undeserved.

Great story -- thanks, Joe

Had the pleasure of watching Rick Barry and his underhand foul shot as Miami played the Johnnies at Alumni Hall. Oh such memories.

If I'm not mistaken he set the record for the most points scored in Alumni Hall with 50 (I believe) in that game.

Does anyone know what the present record is?

This event is $1k a ticket? Is that the most expensive fundraiser for the program ever?

Rick could not have scored 50 in Alumni Hall because years after he played Ernie D of Providence scored 43 and that set a record.

Well good them if they can fill all the tables. That price certainly reduces the pool of people that would go

You're right. I stand corrected, thanks:

It looks like Barry's AH record was 38 in 1964.
