Rick Barry, Boomer & Carton.......

He made a bogus pledge at The President's Dinner in front of a thousand people in 2005

It's a little more than that. Francessa was a pain in the ass to deal with in terms of his appearance at the President's dinner. He constantly wavered, not fully committing till the last minute. He was ill prepared, choosing to adlib his comments which belied his ignorance of the current state of the University and even knew little about the then current basketball team. HE also showed up at the black tie affair in a crumpled brown suit he wore to his WFAN show. He is the original SJU alum to have the name God's Gift, only his is in his mind.  Overall, he ocntinually showed his disrepect for the university, and little allegiance to the school in any form.

I'm guessing he blew off his scholarship promise (in his mom's name) after the school went to a much better emcee, Bruce Beck.

I will flip between Boomer & Carton and MIke & Mike but rarely, if ever, tune into Francessa any longer. Just find him to be too condescending and disrepectful to the folks who pay the bills. Michael Kaye is a Yankee "homer" but is always appreciative and respectful.

Michael Kay is a terrible listen as well. He's just as full of himself as Francesa. It would be great to have a good sports talk show on the radio in the afternoon, but no such luck these days.

Those school's book stores are probably jsut kidding rid of all the XXL's they would otherwise put on the discount rack. I mean really, a guy making 7 figures upset that his alma mater isn't sending him free t shirts and caps?

One last note on Fatcessa. Like many of us, I worked part time all the way through st. johns, usually about 25 hours per week. I'm not complaining, because in a demanding major, I had a friend who worked 30 hours a week, commuted daily from smithtown, and got better grades than I did. I probably spent at least that much time per week (25-30 hours) on and around campus, before and after classes. I played basketball in the gym, hung around frat tables and the rat, sometimes around student government or student union.

A lot of the sports nuts got jobs in the AD, or were always around Alumni Hall. Those interested in broadcasting or journalism worked at the radio station, or Torch.  I know no one who remembers Fatcessa as doing any of that. From what I can tell, he had zero presence on campus, not at SJU games, not in the gym, not i n the Student Union building, not in any single student activity. He simply was not engaged in any way at all.

He's just a guy who went to St. Johns, not a guy who ever bled St. John's Red. Funny, as a contrast, Bruce Beck went to Rutgers, but proclaims the Red he bleeds is SJU red.

Did you check the cafeteria?

I think Francesa has spoken of being mentored by Bill Masur but don't know if that was connected to STJ.

yes indeed Bill Mazer taught  at.st.j's, the A-Maz-in started the 1st sports wrap up show on tv sunday nights on chan 5 called"sports extra" during the early 80s that mike copied with "miked up" on chan4 before he pissed off nbc soo much they kept the naming rights & refused to allow him to use it on his radio show  replaced him w Bruce Beck{Fatcessas designated runner bec. fatty has 2 fake knees }miked on is the new name

Mazer was a big Johnny supporter giving alot of tv coverage to us during Louies best yrs in my opinion helping
Carnesecca get into HoF.

He was a great sports trivia guy,as was another sports anchor Warner Wolf who started the video taped highlights
The 80s had alot of good sports anchors remember Jerry Azar & Len Berman spanning the globe

Both Mazer & Wolf were pioneers copied by George Michaels nbc "sports machine" nationally that inspired espn

Tom MacDonald {mazer co host- sports extra } has a "sports on one" show thats similar with call ins on ny1

If you met Mike in the 90s while he hosted msg's "play by play" show he was very generous to fans back then
because it was a live audience. I met him several times at the play by play & his msg boss Bob Kutowski was real cool giving me & my friends free drinks to be a seated postgame auidence after rangers, knicks,&st.j's games
I agree presently he disrespects his fans way too much & I dont listen often.
Cartoon has a annoying voice & Boomer sells out like laughing like Cartoons Rodney Dangerfield

I agree Kay has a horrible voice & is full of himself
Kay refuses to give Don Lagreca his due as named cohost :yell:
Lupica is even worse with his prepuberty voice & bad laugh
Steve Somers is the funniest & should replace carton but has health issues with voice god speed
Richard Neer has the best voice & is very underated interviewer. Sarted out as Rock dj at wnew & is a good listen.

Can't remember his name for the life of me, but in the late '80s there was a weekend sports anchor on WCBS TV (Channel 2 in NYC) who was a huge St. John's booster. (All I can remember is that he was 40ish and had a pock-marked face.) It was on his Sunday late-night CBS show that Jayson Williams announced he'd be going to St. John's (I remember being elated), and in the year or two that followed, he would frequently have St. John's players on his show. Again, can't remember his name, but he was a big, big Redmen fan. (Anyone remember his name?)

No, he was a "non-ethnic" guy who was only in NYC for a couple of years.

Don Lagreca is probably the most articulate, yet vastly underrrated sports talkie in the area
