Rick Barry, Boomer & Carton.......

Had the pleasure of watching Rick Barry and his underhand foul shot as Miami played the Johnnies at Alumni Hall. Oh such memories.

Was also there. Didn't we lose at Alumni to KU with Walt Wesley and JoJo White that same year?

Gotta think Rick is the most underappreciated (today) of the late '60s/early '70s hoops superstars. It's a safe bet the Hurricnes will NEVER have anyone CLOSE to his 38pt 18 rebound a game senior season.

Not too many folks even realize Rick was the ABA's all time top scorer at 30.5 pts a game. Was a TEN time first team All NBA or All ABA (and a 1 time 2nd teamer).

Only Wilt (6 times) and Jordan (only once) ever scored more than Ricks 35.58 PPG in 1967. And in the ABA, only Charlie Scott and Dr. J (once each) topped his 1972 31.49 ppg.

And here's one to confuse the casual onlooker - he's #1 all time in ABA history in FT%. He's #3 all time in NBA history in FT%. BUT....his combined career FT% ranks only 6th all time. :silly:

Rick Barry was a genuine superstar who put up incredible stats, and Looie has always stated, without any hesitation, that he was the greatest player he ever coached (when both were with the Nets). But if he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves, it's because he has the reputation -- deservedly so or not -- of being an all-pro a-hole. From Tony Kornheiser's memorable 1983 profile of Barry in Sports Illustrated:

Another friend, the Spurs’ Billy Paultz, who played with Barry on the Nets and the Rockets, says, “If you got to know Rick you’d have realized what a good guy he was. But around the league they thought of him as the most arrogant guy ever. I couldn’t believe it. Half the players disliked Rick. The other half hated him.”

If I remember correctly , we defeated KU with Jo Jo White . at Carnesecca . Albie Schwartz kept Jo JO in check .

My nephew and I ran into Rick Barry at Morton's Restaurant in NYC. We had a small table in bar area. I recognized Rick, introduced myself and invited him to join us, and he did. He was alone. We proceeded to talk for an hour. He was the perfect gentleman, and simply a great guy. Not only did he remember the game in Jamaica, but recited the score, recalled he missed a last second shot from mid court that would have won it, and pointed out that they played without their point guard that night since he was ill, and had he played, in his opinion, they never would have lost to us. I was amazed that he could recall the details of that game, with the competitive fire he displayed, after such an unbelievable career in both the ABA and NBA. He spoke highly of SJU, as well as Louie, and called SJU one of the great all time college programs. If he has a bad rap with anyone, it is entirely undeserved.

Why boomer{maryland} & cartoon head{scuse} as hosts again?? They are not funny & have no connection

Why dont they hire a comedian like Artie Lang that would sell tickets :cheer:
At least Artie is funny & since he left Stern the show is hurting for laughs
They could do a Norm Roberts Roast & induct him into the johnnys hall of fame, right next to Ron Rutledge :woohoo:

Great pure shooter, and great scorer. I do remember that he played was not a good defender - coaches would chide players not to rest on defense with your hands on your knees like Rick Barry did.

Who paid the bill?

Barry at Alumni Hall a great game a great performance by Barry. The fire marshall m.ust have been on a break as we were pack in like sardines. Realization Alumni Hall was way to small for the program

Remember Louie stating he really regretted not recruiting Rick out of high school because he didn't think he was good enough to play at St. J's. Also remember louie recalling he threw an eraser at Rick while coaching him with the Nets and realizing he belonged back at the collegiate level.

Some of you may remember Rick's cousin, Jim, who was a heck of a player at St. Peter's Prep in N.J. (all state twice) and Georgetown (he's a Hoya Hall of Famer) back in the mid-1960's.
