Rick’s Targets

No new posts here. I guess the naysayers were right. Rick has lost his edge. Something else should have happened by now! 😜;)😂

August may drag, but expect a great September on the recruiting front. With roster holes to fill after this season, it will be such a positive to land several talented HS kids early and finish strong in transfer market next spring.
Are there other top targets outside of Jackson, Glover, Solano, Khaman, Edgecombe to keep an eye out for? (How spoiled I am for even asking that)

There is that kid from Philly, Isaiah Pasha. He had committed to Iona early because he wanted to play for coach Pitino. Apparently he decided to go to St Thomas More for a prep year before college. He all but said he’s going to St. John’s. He’s in the recruiting threads for 2024.

I seriously doubt that is mutual at this point. I thought for sure Pitino could get both Sir Muhammad and Jamal Mashburn Jr., but now I’m not even sure they are good enough to have a clear path to playing time if Glover commits.

VJ Edgecombe--Make no mistake about it, Edgecombe will again assume the alpha role for a LUHI team that is teeming with guard talent. While Long Island Lutheran may have bid adieu to crucial pieces such as dynamic point guard Jayden Reid (South Florida) and highly versatile inside-outside scoring threat Jayden Ross (who will play for reigning national champion UConn), the national power has already harvested new talent by bringing in stock-rising 2025 point guard Nigel James. They are also likely to yield an uptick in production from a vastly improved Kiyan Anthony, Dylan Mingo, Kayden Mingo, blossoming 6-foot-5 high major wing Jacob Ross, a big and a skilled 6-foot-9, 225-pound lefty in 2024 Godswill Erheriene.

While the program is rife with depth and star power, the team will again run through Edgecombe. He is the most experienced, high wired scoring threat. He is the kid capable of rattling off game-altering runs, soaring into the teeth of the defense and finishing. With his ability to knife his way to the rim and also create his own shit via his improved handle, he has become as daunting a matchup as any in the prestigious NIBC conference. Edgecombe averaged a conference best 17 points last season, thriving against a number of junk defenses applied by national heavy hitters. He has shown a flair for producing on big stages, with significant outbursts in points, rebounds, and assists, against national level competition.

Edgecombe recently whittled down a long list to Florida, Baylor, Duke, Alabama, St. John’s, Miami, Florida State, UConn, Michigan, and the NBA G-League Unite.

Boogie Fland--The Stepinac point guard has been on the radar of high major coaches since his first ever varsity game against Iona Prep back in 2021, scoring 13 points in a Covid-truncated environment. Since then, Fland has authored an illustrious legacy that has catapulted among the programs all-time greats. Fland was the engine which propelled Stepinac to a city championship this season, scoring 30 points en route to avenging a loss to Hayes in the Archdiocesan title. Fland kick-started the offensive flow early, hitting on seven of his first seven shot attempts and really threading through defenders. He has opened up an outside shot that he can extend out to the NBA 3-point line. This aspect of his game has propelled Stepinac to multiple critical victories this past year. Fland displayed the newfound touch during the season-opening victory over Cardinal Hayes.

Fland again seized the hot hand, turning in a wild 31-point performance on the strength of five treys during a mid-season win over Christ The King. In a 24-point showing during the NY Federation semifinal victory over Eagle-BK, Fland bagged four 3-pointers and displayed his effective pull-up jumper and reliable stepback.

Now, as he enters his much anticipated senior season under Pat Massaroni a marked man, Fland has a wealth of options waiting in the wings. He recently narrowed his decisions down to UConn, Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, and St. John’s.

St. John’s, however, appears to be an essential no-go. The Red Storm recently penned a point guard in Simeon Wilcher, who had recently de-committed from UNC.

Conventional wisdom indicates SJU brought in Wilcher under the agreement they would not be recruiting another player at his position. UConn, of course, has a local edge working in its favor with NYC native and Huskies assistant coach Kimani Young. Young has been one of the most active presences in the recruitment of Fland. It is the unpredictable, current day of recruiting. It is NIL. It is rapidly changing rosters and scenarios. Anything can happen.
