Recruiting Impact on “Scandal Schools”

Don't they have Miller on tape talking about the money? What is he going with 'that aint me' defense?
Cleveland State bracing themselves as we speak. They might already be curled up in fetal position in corner of a room with the curtains drawn.
The whole thing will be blamed on Arnold Rothstein and Jack Molinas. After years of Sam Gilbert allegedly being UCLA's bagman, the NCAA gave UCLA a whole year or 2 of probation. Recruiting has been filthy for years, and it's not changing any time soon. Too much money at stake.

If the NCAA is going to turn around and look the other way while whistling, why don't we get in the muck with everyone else? The only thing holding people back from stealing from each other are the police and the prospect of jail time. The only thing holding programs back from cheating is the prospect of a death penalty from the NCAA or heavy sanctions, however they are giving slaps on the wrist. Recruits don't even care either. UNC literally invented fake classes and got nothing for it. Louisville is paying players 100k+ with strippers and booze everywhere and they just got their coach fired. It makes it very hard to play by the rules when you see others successfully cheating with the NCAA's blessing.

You are a loyal fan and obviously care about the success of this program. So here's a thought. Drive down Queens Boulevard. Identify 2 contiguous blocks with failing businesses. Buy them out cheap. Demolish the buildings, and construct "Mike Zaun Maserati". It has a nice ring to it. MZ Maserati needs a back office to handle car loans. You need a sales staff. Heck, you need a company to clean the place every night. Oh look, a 5 star recruit's mom worked at a bank in the lending department, but she is out of work. MZ Maserati is hiring. What a stroke of luck. By the way, MZ Maserati pays the highest sales commissions in the land, but you need young, energetic salesman to sell those high end cars. What a great work-study idea for a college freshman. Learn the automotive industry and earn huge sales commissions along the way. All of a sudden, the 5 star recruits are identifying St. John's as a great destination, marveling at the HOF coaches and the allure of living in the Big Apple. Another recruits uncle owns a cleaning company, but is losing bid after bid. Another stroke of luck and an amazing coincidence. He wins the bid, and gets a nice 2 year contract with MZ. Congrats Mike, you have leveled the playing field.

Haha great post and very true...I love Maseratis too so funny you bring that up. Always wanted a Granturismo somewhere down the line. Beautiful cars...but obviously I get the joke. Can we get into the muck then when the NCAA catches us, show them how nothing happened to any other schools for the same? Could the FBI get involved in that at all if they set double standards that are documented? Probably just dreaming but oh well.

Here's how it would play out: "Mike Zaun, known to late night TV watchers as "Maserati Mike", the name he uses on his outrageous advertisements for his Maserati dealership, admitted to law enforcement that he hired family members of basketball recruits to work in his dealership at inflated salaries, and allowed 5 star recruits the use of luxury cars at below market lease rates. Zaun cut this deal with the U.S. Attorneys Office in exchange for their guarantee to drop multiple charges regarding Zaun's alleged theft of hundreds of T Shirts that were going to be given away free at SJU events. Federal charges resulted from Zaun crossing state lines with the T Shirts stuffed in the trunk of his customized Gran Turismo, painted red and white with the license plate reading: "Hire Mike Rice".

Too funny!

What will Justice Kavanaugh say about that defense when it is appealed to the Supreme Court?

A source involved in the @FBI hoops investigation told me there could be some testimony tomorrow that can create a big nightmare for some coaches & schools / stay tuned ! @espn

Since it's the topic of the day on another thread, we can't be sanctioned for a 38-60 record, can we?!?
Lol.

The usual suspects or some new perpetrators, I wonder?

Unfortunately, I don't expect to hear anything earth-shattering, despite Vitale's tease.

I hate Kansas but I actually like Self, so out of all the blue bloods, he'd be the last I'd like to see go down if the investigation actually had real teeth and brought down major programs/coaches.

That means the NCAA will soon investigate L.I.U., Binghamton, Incarnate Word, Houston Baptist, Robert Morris and Oral Roberts.

Don't forget Athletes in Action and the Washington Generals.

Brian Bowen Sr. tells jury that ex-Louisville asst coach Kenny Johnson handed him $1,300 cash in summer 2017 to help Bowen family make rent after they relocated to city to watch son. "He made it pretty clear that this was like a one-time deal for him," Bowen Sr. says #HoopsTrial

Bowen Sr. told the jury that Kenny Johnson was initially "flabbergasted" when Bowen approached him for money in late June of 2017. But, according to Bowen Sr., the ex-assistant later agreed to make a single payment #HoopsTrial

Per Gary Parish
First-year La Salle coach Ashley Howard hired Kenny Johnson this past May. I was told, at the time, multiple other schools would not allow their coaches to hire Johnson out of fear that something like this might come up. Will be interesting to see how La Salle responds.

The Louisville item noted by Bowen in court today occurred while the school was already on probation. We’ll see if that means much to NCAA after trial concludes.
