Reasonable Expectations for Steere

Knowing he has to get in “game shape” and is also just really beginning his college, career. I would be happy with 8-10 points/game and 5-6 rebounds/game.

More importantly, I think adding some physicality to front line, providing hard screens to enable our scorers to penetrate & score and lastly defending v beefy BE bigs are big ticket items.

Initially I am hoping for someone that can keep players for scoring at will inside when Roberts is on the bench and provide some offense when our shooting goes cold.

Per Zach: Mike Anderson said Ian Steere is a work in progress. Conditioning will be key once he’s eligible. Thinks he can provide some scoring punch #sjubb

I get that getting someone into an actual game at game speed is different then practice. That will take some time especially for big guys.

Not sure what is meant by “conditioning” as it applies to Steere. My understanding was that he has been practicing with the team since last year. My guess is he is in great physical condition. Not sure I understand what he means.

Sorry if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but when is he eligible? I recall reading the "earliest" he could play is the Albany game, but haven't seen anything recently.

Albany game

If Steere has conditioning issues that would be disappointing. However it may also be Coach trying to alleviate expectations on a kid who has not really played college basketball. Even if Steere is in shape it's hard to simulate a real game environment and he'll most likely need time to get his sea legs. Better to keep our expectations low than have keyboard know-it-alls (absolutely, 100% including myself here) rip him apart because we now expect everyone to hit the ground running like Champagnie has.

I have no idea what his ceiling/floor might be, but I am waiting to see who sits and what the rotations will look like, He looked to be an essential piece when the season started but the unexpected development of several players makes this more intriguing.

Give him time and leeway to come along, but he has physical tools at the center position that we haven’t had in a very long time. Big leaper, powerful finisher and has PF-type skills. The tools are there. Let’s see if the demeanor, effort and understanding of the game are as quick to come along. At this point it’s gonna be a big help just to get his size, athleticism out there along with some more fouls.

I agree that the biggest factor is that he is new to college basketball. Steere has literally logged just 5 college minutes.

That said, while reaching his potential will take time, I also think he will be immediately helpful. Come Big East time, it would be a lot to ask Josh Roberts to command the paint all by himself. And, if Steere can provide some low-post catch and pass, the inside/outside ball movement will help.

To keep it simple, off the bat he really needs to just get the ball and try to dunk anything he gets his hands on deep in the post. On defense, he’s a strong body and should provide a presence on his man and on the glass.

That sounds about right per my expectations of Steere.

He's also got some good size and 2 years of high major Div 1 practice under his belt. He's not a noob. Minimizing mistakes/turnovers, good screens without fouling right there he's a major addition. I'm less worried about the rebounds and points but defensive rebounds are more a need than offensive. Overall just posted this on Twitter. SJU currently #1 in the country in Off rebounds. #11 total number of rebounds #8 rpg. #51 in defensive rebounds.

I think that might be the high side Paultz.

If he's not in shape yet, then I'd be happy with 5-6 points and 4+ Rebounds for the first month since I don't expect him to play more than 15min a night. Anything else will be a huge bonus.

I'm going to keep my prediction vague so as not to paint myself into a corner. I'm going with 8 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal against Albany, with two turnovers. And he'll get yanked for Earlington at 14:31 of the second half after taking an ill-advised three.
