Quick Lavin Story

This reminds me of the time I met Coach Lavin at LaGuardia 4 years ago. He was accompanying Phil Greene 3 back home to Chicago to attend his best friend's funeral. He didn't have to go with him. He could have just given PG3 time off to go, but he didn't just do that. He took the time away from his family and the team to show PG3 that he cared enough to go with him during that difficult time. Coach Lavin is a kind and generous man. My hat's off to him.

It is a slippery slope when we begin to question the apparently good and charitable things people do, especially those things that get recognition. AA members live by certain life principles, one of which is "Don' t take somebody ekse's inventory". Certainly that principle is much easier said than done, especially when we factor in such biased notion as like and dislike.

Beast you and I have both been around the block and back. Over the course of our lifetime we've both encountered people who's every move is calculated. These people are often times charming, funny, generous, etc, but also calculating. I honestly have no idea what Lavin's motivation was for taking Felix and CJ out to diner. Maybe it was altruistic, maybe it was guilt, maybe it was yet another photo-op(posting pix on Instagram would lend credence to that notion), maybe it was a combination of things. I don't have a clue.......and neither do the posters on here who tout the move as "purely from the goodness of his heart", and call out the validity-and in some cases, the sanity-of those that disagree with that premise. At the very least, Lavin mishandled both kids at periods during their time here. Certainly it's fair to question his motivation for taking the 2 of them out to diner, and at a high profile restaurant no less and then posting pix on social media. And with all due respect to the OP, who I like and respect, you cannot post something like this and not expect to elicit conflicting viewpoints and some venomous comments. Lavin is still far to much of a polarizing figure around here, and will probably continue to be one for a while.

He didn't take just those 2 players. He took kids ( students ) that worked for him while at sju and their families too. It was a lot of people that he took to Phillipe Chow and he booked the private room so they could all just hang and relax and eat together. BTW in the private room at Chow no one even eating in the dining room knows you are there other than the staff. You have to walk through the kitchen to get to the private room

I know my restaurants :)

Yes, very private. He really wanted to stay under the radar on this. #Instagram
what if one of the people there asked him for a pic and he said sure lets take some pics and then told them he would put them up on his instagram for them

Could be worse. He could've taken them out like Tiger went out to dinner with those SEALS and then stiffed em with the check cause of his social impotence.

Went to a golf bachelor party at a resort in NC where they have PGA tournament. We were talking to the hospitality girl or whatever the title is for the resort in the lobby bar one night. After a few drinks she was riffing on some of the weird / jackasses on the tour. She said on top of everything else Tiger was the cheapest person in the world, he had to be reminded he actually had to pay for things and he NEVER tipped.

That's odd because I heard from some ladies I've never met that in their interactions with Tiger he begged to at least put in just the tip.

Girl was smoking hot and engaged to some really rich guy, judging by hope diamond she was wearing on her finger. It looked like diamond old lady threw in the ocean at end of Titanic. Said he would not leave her alone.
FWIW she said Phil Mickelson was really nice and a very good tipper.

Phil not so good with the stock tips

Did real good until he got caught ;)

He actually has good tips, he's not being charged. Preet can't get him.

What is the over/ under on this thread getting to 10 pages?

Nothing like a good Lavin thread during the off season/dead period to get the fan base riled up. Thanks Maher lol.

As I've told you many times, I'm not pro Lavin at all, but I can recognize the good things he accomplished. Really, no one cares a heck of a lot if a coach is a good guy or not - else Pitino and Cal would never find work. It's all about winning, so compared to the prior guy, at least Lavin re-stablished SJU as a Big East competitor.

I always felt, especially after meeting NR a few times, that he made a career out of being a nice guy, most especially to people who could help him out. I don't think he made a lot of friends among fans or students, which was strange considering his public good guy persona. The guy over in Philly makes friends in every conversation with a stranger.

Pretty certain that if Lavin won a bit more here, the handful of Lavin haters here would be completely on board, lazy or not. The survey on here at the end of 2015 campaign overwhelmingly wanted him back, but I think it was still a lukewarm endorsement.

In the end, the record shows that Lavin reversed nearly a decade of being the laughing stock of the Big East, and revived a moribund program. NR for his part, couldn't have won if he had Villanova's NCAA championship team.

I never said that he didn't do some good things here. He definitely did. He created a buzz that we hadn't seen in a while, and met with some success on the court. He was definitely an improvement over Norm, which in and of itself is not saying very much considering that Norm may have been one of the worst D1 coaches ever. But the fact is that he was/is narcissistic and lazy. Not exactly a recipe for sustained success. He would have never won consistently here. As for the survey, I think the pro-Lavin sentiment had less to do with Lavin and more to do with a lack of faith that the administration could make a better hire. I'm pretty confident they made the right hire. Time will tell.

FWIW she said Phil Mickelson was really nice and a very good tipper.

i actually heard the whole nice guy Phil thing was an act. But Vijay Singh is apparently really good guy. Obviously this was told to me a while ago if Vijay was in the conversation, though. Maybe Phil is no longer a fraud.

Tiger is a renowned non-tipper. Huge asshole as both a husband and restaurant patron.

I am sure being a good tipper was more important to her than nice guy thing anyway. Being generous with your tipping goes a long way towards curing any other issues you might have ;)

Despite all those knocks against Tiger he still is the man. Top 5 favorite athlete ever. He is socially awkward and introverted but that means little to me. Every guy who ever stepped to him was demolished. I respect Phil as well. Apparently his nickname on tour is "FIGJAM" (f*&k im good, just ask me).

This article was one of the best sports reads ever. Especially love the part where his coward caddie Stevie questions his decision to play in the last US Open he won. Tiger's response shows the type of competitor he was.

I am generally able to separate an athlete, entertainer, musician that I enjoy from the person they are. Tough to like a guy that stiffed a bunch of Navy Seals though. Have to draw a line somewhere I guess. That is a good enough line for me.

Very fair point but read that article and you will have a better understanding why he did that. He legitimately thought he was one of the guys. Anecdote from Michael Jordan in there saying he went out with Tiger and Derek Jeter one night and Tiger asked them how to get with girls. They looked at him with astonishment. Until very recently, he has had a very hard time dealing with the fact that he is Tiger Woods.

Obviously something off with him socially but when I go out with my friends that I am in a better position than I always pickup the tab.
But who am I to judge my two favorite athletes of all time are Strawberry and Gooden so........

Totally agree and those 2 were 2 of my favorite ballplayers. Especially Doc. I'm so freaking bummed because I was suppose to go to a dinner with him and 15 other people middle of june and was really looking forward to finally meeting him but just booked vacation yesterday and wont be here for the dinner

Doc was my favorite met pitcher ever.

Met him at my friends bar during the playoffs last year. He was a no show the first time he was supposed to come but came back the next game and was only supposed to stay for 3 innings and wound up staying the whole game. Was really nice and talked to everyone. Only thing was you weren't allowed near him with a drink. Which was tough considering it was a bar.

Was talking with me and my friend that owns the bar between innings and he said when all is said and done Noah was going to be far away better than all the other guys in Met rotation. And this was early during Dodger series.

Which just goes to show how delusional he is. He is definitely socially stunted.

Without a doubt Tigers' run from the 99 PGA to Torrey Pines was astounding though. He was dominant like no other. His margins of victory obviously legendary. He won 13 over that period,

But Jack is still the greatest of all time.

Tiger's not going to get Jack's record (and he'll never come close to Jack's 2nd and 3rd place finishes in majors, presently Jack 26, Tiger 10, think about that). And Jack played in a period where there was better competition from all time greats at the top (from Palmer to Player to Trevino to Watson), Tiger excelled in an era where there may have been better competition top to bottom but no other dominant figures (none of his peers won more than 5 majors, and in that category it's only Phil).

Cool Jack fact, in the entire decade of the 70's Jack finished outside the top 10 in a major 4 times, he finished in the top 5 27 times.
