Questions On Our Previous Coaches

Thanks to you guys for bringing up Penders and Kennedy because I can never remember both their names at the same time. Those guys had quite a local rivalry going that if I remember correctly even got physical at one point.

Since I started this crazy thread, I just need to throw one more thing out there and won't start a new thread for it, but this was right before I started following the team closely, and it blows my mind that this actually happened. What is everyone's recollection of this??

Jack Wolfinger’s St. John’s career is over but his legacy may have just begun.

According to published reports, Wolfinger’s car was pulled over by University of Connecticut police early Thursday morning and in addition to authorities finding 10.2 grams of marijuana, the vehicle was registered to former St. John’s star Ron Artest. The NCAA could view that as an extra-benefit infraction, although sources at St. John’s were confident no rules had been broken.

While the Red Storm were beating Georgetown, 73-70, Wolfinger, was cruising in Connecticut with UConn players Tony Robertson, Marcus Cox and freshman Taliek Brown of Queens. Campus police pulled over the car, smelled marijuana and then found the 10.2 grams. Cox initially told police the marijuana was his but sources said Wolfinger later came forward to say it was his stash.

According to sources close to the Connecticut basketball program, Robertson, Cox and Brown tested negative for marijuana use. Wolfinger, because he is not a Connecticut player, was not tested. Wolfinger said he has not retained counsel.

Wolfinger went to Joel Barlow a real space cadet. I talked to a guy who was a year younger than Wolfinger at the time and was at dinner with Jarvis and Wolfinger. The guy ended playing JUCO I think eventually ended up at UMass. Jon something, anyway said Wolfinger a nightmare

And all Tom Penders needed to do was show true contrition and apologize to Carnesecca and he would have been hired.
That was never going to happen. After Dexter Cambridge was declared ineligible by the NCAA for accepting cash from a booster, Penders, then his coach at Texas, accused someone from St. John’s of offering Cambridge a suitcase full of cash to come here while he was in JUCO. This was on top of the pot shots he took at Coach C and St. John’s while at Fordham.

Jack Kaiser went himself to inquire and Cambridge denied it ever happened.

This thread will be the inspiration for an espy 30 for 30 episode. How many years it took for st johns to finally get it right and hire Rick Pitino
No it won’t. ESPN doesn’t do any specials on the BE since they have no contractual ties to us and they were the co-conspirators of the breakup of the previous Big East after we helped put them on the map. Add to the fact that their 30 for 30 eulogy on the death of the Big East Entitled “A Requiem for the Big East” wound up being premature as the death of the Big East was premature and widely exaggerated.

Epperson had issues with his transfer records, right? I thought he had a smooth game, but unfortunately his time at St. John's was extremely brief.
It was later revealed that his coach doctored his transcripts. He was a big talent though. Hosley was even better and all-conference caliber.

Showtime-Ingram-Hosley-Epperson-Hamilton would have been a tournament team and Jarvis was involved with a lot of recruits to finish that roster off.

Lou was PISSED about this.

Which is why our 1991 round of 32 NCAA game against Texas was even sweeter. Lou’s final Sweet 16 of his coaching career.

Cambridge scored 17 pts on 6-16 fga with just 5 rebounds. On the flip side, Billy Singleton scored 21 as all 5 starters scored double figures. Malik Sealy was key with 19 pts and 12 rebounds.

Showtime wasn't showtime by Junior year assuming Jarvis stayed he'd have never played with Epperson anyway. Hosley I liked I think he was Juco All American but didn't he sit a year after decomitting and not play till a year after Jarvis was already gone or was that because some rule about decomitting ?

That being said Jarvis was involved with no high school recruits at that point. Heck he told a gym of coaches he wasn't recruiting HS kids anymore. If memory serves me correct Showtime fell in his lap because of Ron Naclerio telling him to take him or something like that ( maybe I have that story wrong but Panther will know how that happened because Showtime was one of his kids as was Lamont )

I know. My response was total sarcasm about another coaching name that was never going to get hired here.

That would have been Showtime’s soph year. He was awesome that year and who knows if he gets hurt. Norm moved on from Hosley and screwed him over big time.

Hosley was a monster. 18.6 pts 9.2 rebounds 2.1 steals.

JUCO was loaded then and Jarvis had some guys lined up.
