Questions On Our Previous Coaches

Pisco Sours to the rescue.;):cool::)
Officially up 36 hours straight. Now it’s Capirinha Country time. And Room112s mention of Jarvis Norm and Mullin as coaches here won’t make me go to sleep any easier so I need to self medicate

This drink is for all the misery we suffered that started with the end of Jarvis time but our long time suffering is over with Pitino

*Who Norm had absolutely no clue what to do with.
I have no defense of Norm. But I would still have let him coach his seniors. I actually think he might have made the tournament with that team. However I admit that my opinion may very well be colored by my total lack of enthusiasm for Lavin.

Happily all of that is now water long under the bridge. Setting aside any issues I have with Pitino, his ability to recruit and (especially) coach has never been debatable, he's a HOFer for a reason.

My bad man, but these were pressing questions I had that needed answers immediately :D

I nA friend of all ours on this board will make everyone puke with stories of what and who could have happened and who would have come play

,1)The next season the Red Storm stumbled out of the gate, losing to several nonconference teams that they usually beat with ease. Jarvis was fired on December 19, 2003—the first Big East coach to be fired during the season. Assistant Kevin Clark replaced him for the remainder of the season. His final record at St. John's was 110–61.
Jarvis' record after loss of wins as determined by NCAA investigation, with an illegal player 65-106. St. John's all-time record was negatively impacted so it seems fair that his should also be so impacted.

I apologize in advance for the timing of this post during such a special season. But as I've enjoyed this run and reflected back on our recent history, a few questions came to mind, and wanted to bring it to the board before I forgot. Would appreciate anyone's insight into the following:

1) Why was Jarvis fired mid-season? Seems to be such a rarity to have a mid-season firing in college basketball, and obviously turned out to be a poor decision in retrospect.

2) Why did Norm get 6 years before being fired? Again, another rarity for a coach to get this long without any semblance of success.

3) Was Mullin actually serious about his intentions to want to keep the job for a 5th season?
3- He got velcro sneakers and suddenly, there was not anything left for him to do during the games.

Time for Paultz to put up the pic of him looking over the players back during a huddle while a 23 or 34 year old draws up plays instead of one of the smartest players to ever play the game of basketball

1. Jarvis became a prima dona coach for a school whose president had zero interest in basketball. Before declining Jordan's offer to become coach of the Hornets, hs angled to have his son succeed him as head coach here and was rejected. He then proclaimed that he was finished recruiting nyc because of having to negotiate with aau coaches and handlers. Then when the team got off to a horrible start in his final season, angrily retorted that he didn't care about losses because he was a teacher. A frat brother worked in the athletic office, and allegedly upon Jarvis' firing, a staffer strolled up to his office door, removed the nameplate and threw it into the garbage to cheers and applause. Goodbye Mikey!

2) Norm's hiring was a product of wack job Fran and the miserable above it all Jarvis. Roberts was Harrington's hire and he was everything Jarvis and Fraschilla wasn't, namely a so called nice guy. Unfortunately he was nothing that his predecessors were, namely a basketball coach. The myth is that he cleaned up Gomorah, but geez how hard is it to not recruit questional kids and lay down rules. He got 6 years because he wasn't jarvis or fran and that was 5 years too many, maybe 6.

3) Mullin supposedly wanted to stay but i believe he was negotiating as if he had some leverage for an extension. My feeling was that if he were reasonable, he maybe would have gotten one year or two non guaranteed tacked on. Instead, they cut ties.

bringing a working girl back to the Westin and ultimately finding themselves in the middle of an ugly, failed blackmail scheme.
Wow! What a whitewash. This version completely downplays the players malfeasance in this matter. Also, doesn't mention Elijah's heroism in saving us from a likely program suspension, ncaa sanctions, players incarceration and g*d knows what else?

Marriliac great post, the mid season firing of Jarvis set the program back 7-8 years maybe more . Looking back the issues as I see it was a poor ad in Dave Wegzyrn who failed to ever discipline Grady Reynolds for attacking a female student and not overruling Mike Jarvis at the time thus creating an anything goes environment.

The fire Jarvis chants were a little much IMHO at the time. End of the day Jarvis had 4 trips to the NCAA, 1 NIT championship, an elite 8 team and BET championship Not Bad. !!!

But The cleanup after Jarvis was worse. Not hiring 2 asst coaches after the Jarvii were let go was a disaster that led to the Pitt fiasco. The hiring of Norm IMHO and giving him 6 seasons was the worst decision in the history of SJU hoops. Norm was a horrible game coach.

Lavin: great guy. great talker. zero coaching skills.
Great recruiter also.

In 2007 while playing for the Golden State Warriors, Baron Davis looked into the rafters at Pauley Pavilion during the a Warriors' morning shoot-around and said, "We should have a banner up there: the only team to make the tournament without a coach."

He went 2 for 5 at St. Johns, which I'm figuring is about on par with 3 National championships at Ucla, and was a c*nt hair away from 4 for 5. There you go doing your eye test thing again and valuing it above facts and on court outcomes. When was your last visit to an optomologist?

While the timing was bad, Jarvis brought it on his self. His behavior at the end really left them with no choice, he had to walk the plank.

And, sorry for the consecutive posts, but Fran was the best coach/recruiter we had since Looie and up until Pitino. Lavin was a good recruiter, especially with the hand he was dealt, but Fran was both…fight me 😉

Fran certainly put together a roster that Jarvis was able to bring to within a hair of the Final Four. There is zero.evidence Fran was capable of the same, and his resume too short here to evaluate fairly. He was 21-15 in conf here in 2 seasons, and in 3 seasons at NM only 21-21 in conference and no NCAA bids.

Certainly had a good year two here, but tried to play that into a big raise while under contract which with a lie undid himself.

There is just no way to know if he could established sustainable winning here, which is supported in part by the fact that he didn't set the world on fire at NM.

Guinnes nice posts but I disagree about Norm at the minimum he should have been fired after year 4 . He was destroyed on Mike and The Mad dog in year 4 interview so much so that in year 5 Chris Monasch took the yearly SJU hoops state of the union interview with Mike and the Dog and for whatever stupid reason the schools gives Norm a 6th year. The Norm era was so bad many of us on here were questioning if SJU even belonged in the Big East. Ill take the Jarvis era way over Norm any time.
