Questions for Next Year

I will start out by saying I am extremely disappointed by this season. What hurts the most is being one game away from being invited to the tournament...thinking back to our best FT shooter on the line at Penn State with no time left and a chance to win it but missing makes that even harder. Dropping the ball against Depaul in 2OT even worse, as a win there is a 15+swing in RPI position.

I think next year is different all around. Jordan will be one of the best in the country.... Harrison as well. I think the roles will be clearly sorted out, and Greene, for example, will go into this offseason knowing he's solely and two-gaurd. Sanchez really need more than a year and he hurt us as much as he helped us with his poor defense, excessive fouls, and awful rebounding range.

What scares me is that 2-3 zones hurt us way too much. Sampson needs 15 pounds of muscle and we need a SF that is committed to hitting the damn boards and working the baseline. That is how you make them pay for zoning you.

I hope Jones comes back with a different mentality because I would not be able to stomach two forwards that can't rebound.
I hope Pointer either has a complete overhaul of his game and his role on this team, transfers, or Lavin finally takes the blinders off and gives Balamou his minutes.
I hope CO stays and has a great summer because I really am starting to like him and we are much better on both sides of the floor with him in the game.
My boy Balamou needs a legit look because he brings everything the 2013-2014 team lacks.
I think Whitesell's presence will be felt much more next season.

I really want to share your optimism but am I missing something that you see in Balamou. Can you explain where you think he fits into next year's team and what kind of numbers that you see him putting up? I saw nothing in his game last year to make me think he has the talent to make an impact in the Big East.

I just saw your evidence above. We can pull out tape of Dom blocking shots and dunking as well. I see Balamou is a great athlete but can he shoot the ball?

We can analyze all we want, the fact is if we go into next season with JaKarr Sampson, Christian Jones, and the Delarosa brothers, the team is in major trouble.

I wasn't a huge fan of Orlando Sanchez or God's Gift games, but you aren't replacing their production with the Delarosa brothers.

That's not exactly what I said, I said Christian Jones, the Delarosa brothers and a JUCO combo forward who's got some game and can give us what Sanchez gave us. Those four together can give us the same thing we had this year even if we lose Obepka. Then, on top of that we rely on the roll players like Greene (as a 2G), Pointer, Branch and Hooper(as a 3pt specialist). But, this team will go as far as Rysheed, D-Lo and Sampson take us.

I actually think that Jones will be better than Gift offensively. Hopefully him sitting a year and developing his game a little he will rebound better and play some D. He's a big strong kid and if he developed his game some he'll definitely give us more than Gift did. how many passes went off Gifts hands and out of bound because he couldn't handle the passes. Too many to count. Jones has better hands.

Yes, we lose Obepka's shot blocking presence which is huge but he couldn't do anything else that well and he picked up a lot of silly fouls. You couldn't have him in there in the end of a close game when you would really need his defensive presence because his FT shooting was so horrid.

At the end of the day, if this team can have a really big year next year and make at least a sweet 16 this program will have turned the corner finally. Regardless of how many underclassmen we lose after next year we can possibly have 3 players going into the NBA Draft in one year and some visible success which should set us up for huge recruiting years in '15 and '16. Not top 100 players like we have on our roster now but more top 25-30 players

Most top 15 recruits will have committed long before our season has finished. See we are this year with the 14 class.

At best he's a serviceable roll player.

Am I missing something? I thought there was only one De La Rosa, he has a brother?????

Yes a 1 point 1 rebound Jr transfer from the powerful FIU.

Truthfully we didn't really target any big recruits in 2014, what top recruit would you expect to come here anyway when they likely wouldn't get major minutes. Look at the recruits already at the top of our list for 2015. '15 was just much much more of a priority that 2014

Ten top 60 recruits off the boards already. They go quickly.

Is he considering SJU?

Supposedly he is enrolled already. Not sure that he has a scholarship offer.

May be an incentive laden scholarship offer...if he gets the average up to 2, het gets a 2nd semester...and so on...

Uh, that would be affirmative. Unfortunately Max, Marco, Dom, Gift, and Phil also have brothers. Hey we kid because we love! :)

Agree entirely with your assessment, Andrew2. I need to see more than a 10-second highlight clip before I believe Felix can contribute more than Pointer, who, as you point out, could have a much longer highlight reel of his own dunks and blocks.

Yes a 1 point 1 rebound Jr transfer from the powerful FIU.

Is he considering SJU?

Yes from what I've read on another thread he is currently enrolled and attending classes with 1.5 to 2 years of eligibility left. A co worker of mine played against him in high school (Bronx kids) said he is legit but more of a defender tho not known for his scoring prowess

I have watched team after team have success running 6'4" to 6'6" quick release jump-shooting wings off ball screens, picks, and curls and wonder if those types of players (once named Schaefer, Cluess and McEntyre at STJ are now banned from the program. Don't know if Felix can do that.

From observing the small sample of Felix's work at St John's, he appears to have Willie Glass - type shooting range

So we're talking 4-feet and in.
