Tyler Harris? Can someone refresh me on whether we offered? I realize he's not Lavin's kind of player because he can shoot but, did we seriously recruit him? Woulnd't you prefer him over Pointer or Greene, even though he's a small Forward?

I would. Coming from the Harris Family in Dix Hills, he's kind of a local thoroughbred player too! but, too good a shooter for Steve..

Nah, we didn't recruit him.... No way.

The Johnnies 2011 recruiting class had (for the most part) already been filled, and minutes probably were gonna be limited for Harris with kids like Harkless and Sampson in the fold (with Pelle looking likely, at the time, to commit to St. John's).

If we were winning the recruits that got away would be of little significance to us.

Not to mention the recruits who got away anyway, Polee, Lindsay, Pelle, Garrett....That contributed zero here, except for GARRETT. i wish Garrett had stayed, instead of Dom..dom's technicals are game losing.Plus he's not a BE player offensively.

The point was HARRIS offered? SAMPSON WASN'T GOING TO BE ELIGIBLE ANYWAY. It just seems to me a local kid like HARRIS would have gotten more respect than some of LAVIN'S other recruits, not necessarily Harkless or Sampson..

Harris can shoot the rock and most of ours can't. Enough said.

He was supposed to have taken an official visit. Most times when a player take an official visit, then a scholarship is on the table.

Sampson wasn't eligible for his initial freshmen season, but when he initially committed his eligibility was up in the air, but the staff thought he may make the grade.

The position Harris played was gonna be occupied by Harkless, Sampson, and probably, even Pelle.

The thing was you said we didn't recruit him, but we did. Stop moving the basketball goals.

Please you can fault the staff for things but recruiting Tyler Harris is not one of them. They had Harkless, Sampson and Pointer already at the same position. There was little pt the staff could offer him three years ago. Furthermore his family knew the school well as his sister was on the ladies team. Could have been a positive or a negative factor.

Thanks, 'North! Fingers can be pointed, but not when it comes to the recruitment of Harris.

If it came down to Harris or Pointer is a valid question to ask..But, I' was just curious since Lavin gets so many kudos for recruiting.. It's a fantasy like question since it didn't happen.

Just wondering why a local kid, with a pedigree , like Harris might have had more potential than Pointer? Who had limited offensively skills, even in HS.

Personally I believe the key issue has been player development.
Now going back three years ago there was no doubt that each of Harkless, Sampson and Pointer were ranked considerably higher than Harris. I believe the staff did great in obtaining the commitments they did.
With respect to Dom he was never considered a great offensive threat but was considered a great defensive player.
Each of Harkless and Sampson had a great rookie season but Sampson, Pointer and others have not seemed to improve. That to me is on the staff and is our biggest problem by far.
There are also too many players on our team and the lack of pt, or the ability of Coach Lavin to shuffle players in and out, is also impeding player development greatly.
I said pre-season that Lavin's biggest challenge would be roster management and suggested he redshirt three players in order to alleviate that problem.
Unfortunately, he barely listened and only Christian Jones was redshirted and no one is signed for next season. In that respect Coach has complicated his job.
Who knows, perhaps Cooley is better at player development, perhaps it has just happened because Harris gets a ton of pt, perhaps it is a combination of both factors and others I have not considered.

I do know that if I was Coach Lavin and if I was coming back next season I would seriously determine post-season if my friends on the bench are really helping me and the team in those areas where I am deficient and if the answer was not positive I would replace one or more of them with coaches who would make the staff more complete.

A significant element of a Coach, when recruiting players, should be to assess the potential upside a kid has to further improve their game at the college level.. Obviously, reliance on just subjective HS player rankings isn't a formula for success, as we have seen first hand.

i would have thought anyone seeing Pointer play in HS, would have quickly seen a player devoid of fundamental skills in shooting, ball handling and judgment.. Regardless of his rating.
And, considering the surfacing of Lavin not actually going to see possible recruits, even locally, one can wonder about all the accolades he received, that seem to be drying up daily.
And, at this stage of their college careers, it appears Harris may have more upside than Sampson and, certainly more than Pointer..

So, let's review.. Lavin not a good Game COACH, weak at player development and, now lackluster in his recruiting efforts, not showing his face at HS tournament?

And, throw in a program in dire straits right now.ALL under his watch.

Yea, and toss in that his wife isn't as hot as everyone says she is.

Uggh, this is getting boring.
