Providence Game

Does anyone close to the team know if CO's ankle has allowed him to practice?

Last we saw him he could not play in a game.

Didn't think we'd win this game before the season started as I thought we'd split but there's nothing we've shown thus far this season that makes me think we can pull this out.

We have no answer for Henton.

What is substitution management?

It is a major at the University of Coaching. It can be a minor for those majoring in Basketball Operations Management if you take at least 12 credits of Sports Management for Dummies. Attendance is optional like being a mod from Ohio.

I guess I should have put a smiley on my question and I wouldn't have had that last sentence added....

I don't see us winning this game.

We are 0-4 against the Top 25 RPI and the Friars come in at # 13 and off a fresh win against the Hoyas.

They like to grind it out and the game will be lost in the last ten minutes when our lack of depth will kill us because we will be exhausted and Cooley will completely out-maneuver Lavin.

Another season full of hope get going down the toilet right before our eyes. And getting a W at DePaul ain't gonna be easy either.

0-4 here we come

Providence used exactly 6 players for most of last season. I think we'll be fine

Correct they did but those six were also better players than our six and there was more length for them too. Big difference. And we are completely ignoring the Ed Cooley vs Lavin mismatch. Let's not discount that please.
Think it was more about balance than their 6 being better than our 6...If we weren't so shorthanded in the front court, we would have beaten both Seton Hall and Butler...

Lavin needs to take the approach that he has no choice but to use JDR and Stewart - and stick to it...6 players is not a rotation just as as force fitting 10 players early last years wasn't

Sir Dom is going to have be in his jock strap all night. Henton shoots lights out and can board as well. Can't fall asleep on him.

Providence puts out a legitimate sized, skilled BE TEAM, with good balance from the 5 starters.. we get no meaningful offense from CO, BRANCH and of late, Pointer and Jordan..

We are undersized against them and nearly all BE TEAMS.. They are defending their homecourt.

Rooting for a win is what being a fan is about.. But, our team is undermanned and truthfully underskilled against most BE opponents.. Are those obstacles easily overcome? No.

DLO can't carry this team unless he scores 35-40 a game. Jordan has been nothing remotely deserving of his HS REP and questionable NBA skills. He has a poor jumper and misses a lot of his athletic drives to the basket. not finishing like Raftery says. And, he is a inconsistent free throw shooter. And, I haven't even gotten to his attitude yet.

This is a very tough game to win.

Of Course, on any given Tuesday or Wednesday anything can happen in the BE.. And, we are overdue for a win. We haven't won a game this year..It is what makes this league what it is. A war every game, home or away. :)

In every game it comes down to how well you prepare and how well you manage during the game. Knowing when to sub, who to key your defensive efforts on, when to call time out, etc.
Steve Lavin likes to use John Wooden as an inspiration so the very least he should remember about the Wizard of Westwood was a mantra he repeated throughout his storied career : "Failure to prepare is preparing to fail". I hope after the hard lesson from the Villanova game, we come prepared.

If Rutgers can beat Wisconsin, anything can happen!!
The Dunk is a tough place to win
My guess is that our past history there is not good
They are much bigger than us and are also pretty athletic
I, too, expect a grind it out, low scoring game
I see us losing a close game where both teams score in the mid 50's to low 60's
I hope I am wrong!! I wouldn't mind eating some crow!!

We've won 2 out of the last 3 there, with our only loss being when D'Lo was suspended 2 years ago. It will be a tough game, but not a big upset if we beat them, and certainly not anything like Rutgers beating Wisconsin.

I had a great teleconference call today with a guy whose family is very prominent in professional basketball. He is good friends with Ed Cooley and told me that Cooley is a phenomenal human being. He grew up very poor in Providence, and the first thing he did when he was signed as PC's new head coach was to make a sizeable contribution to the Providence YMCA. Really great to hear nice things about any coach in our conference.

FWIW, I think we tilt the season upwards again by winning tomorrow night. Sampson signing brings us good karma.

Providence is a very good team, but IMO this is an absolute must win for St. John's. Can't afford to start off Big East play going 0-4.

Already lost 2 home games. Need to get some wins on the road if you want to make the tournament.

I agree Mark, I don't think we win. I just don't we'll have the horses down the stretch in a close game with our short rotation. I hope I'm wrong.

Winning these next two on the road would be quite a response and tell us all we need to know about the resolve of this team and the direction it will head.

The key to this game is simple...limit Providence on the offensive glass. Despite what is posted on this site, Cooley is not a very good in-game coach, but we can't expect to win on the road if we give them 15 extra chances to score after they miss.
