Providence Game Thread

We have the same team next year, two factors and we will be a tournament team

1. Better non conference schedule
2. Avoid poor start to conference play

If we did both of these things this year! we'd be a lock! so let's learn from our mistakes and come back a tournament team.

I'm done watching. This is just a sad effort by our guys. Providence wants to play in the ncAa. Our guys probably bought Lavins bs that we have a bid locked up. I hope I check later and we won but I doubt it.

I agree 100%.

Mr. Joe Cool Lavin needs to go back to sunny California and feed his crap to the birds.

Say what you want, but as little desire and hustle you saw from the players is simply a reflection of the lack of urgency that starts at the top.

To stand on the sidelines with your arms folded for an entire game not adding anything but break in action pep talks is unacceptable.

Anyone who watched this team this season had to know that when you saw him sub in Greene and Dom at the same time, it was a wrap. We were up and had all the momentum. Cotton had 2 fouls and we never went at him. For a Providence team that runs 6 players, that is a flat out joke.

This is Lavin's team. Lavin's recruits.

They get fed daily a steaming bowl of you're better than you actually are and they believe it.

His recruiting philosophy is flawed. Check.
His coaching skills are non-existent. Check.

He's a PR guy. Plain and simple.

We need a coach. We need someone who doesn't mind getting their fingernails dirty. We need someone who doesn't mind walking into a Bronx gym, if need be, to scout a kid who plays with toughness and heart.

I watched Masiello coach against Iona the other night like his life was literally on the line. Guess what. His kids will give everything they've got because they know their head coach is.

Give Lavin a 5 or 6 year extension and we'll get nowhere of significance unless he changes his act. Because that's all it is. An act. He's acting as if he knows what he's doing out there.

I'll ask anyone to show me 2 set plays that we run that proves otherwise.

Flame on......

Stop trying to be so self important. You made a good post. Leave it at that. Adding the "flame on" makes it seem like you are inviting someone to dare and challenge you.

But since you asked, I will flame you on Masiello. Just because a coach jumps and rants during games, does not mean they want it more. If that were the only prerequisite, Gonzalez and Rice would still be employed.

In bold: You can toss Fraschilla in the equation, as well.

Like I said previously.... If you don't like Lavin, then that's all well and good. I can respect it. But do not make up things or exaggerate a point.

Not sure what felt worse today. Being outnumbered by Nova, SH and PC fans (how is this even possible on OUR home court?!), or the soft, causal effort I mostly saw from my team.

I started to leave and caught a glimpse of the comeback on the screens and immediately walked back in. Stupid me, I was actually convinced that I was about to witness a memorable comeback that we'd be reliving for years.

POP, the air came out as Jakarr missed a bunny and I'm now left processing another disappointing season as a St. John's fan.

I'm a sore loser and don't mind shaking hands and congratulating the opposing coach. But can we stop the BS smiles. Afterall, even Cooley was trying to move on and Mr. Personality was still talking. Give it a rest. Why is he so happy after a losing a big game?

Sadly, I will watch them play in the NIT. This is my team and I will always root for them. But, I can't pretend that this season was a success. Was I entertained this season following them? Yes. But it has been one of the most disappointing seasons in a very long time.

Making it worse, I agree with what many of you are saying on here. There is nothing that has me thinking next year will be any better. If we had the recruits coming in like some of the other schools have, that would be different.

Damn, I was so looking forward to our run in the BET and a bracket on Sunday! Stupid me!

Opening day for baseball is just a couple of weeks away. Thank god.
I walked out completely and didn't look back. Blew my friends from work off who were sitting in another section because we were supposed to go get steaks after. I made sure I was on the 4:40 train home because I was so pissed

You weren't all smile like Lavin was when he was shakin hands with Cooley?

You really don't have any credentials or credibility, to lecture anyone on any subject..I liked your self portrait of the donkey's A-- the other day. A very good likeness of you.

I wish I could fast forward to 2016. Unfortunately next year will be no different!

Should surpass Creighton next year.
Unfortunately Marquette, Seton Hall and G'Town will be passing us by.
Thank goodness for DePaul.

Marquette, Seton Hall and G'town should pass us by next year based on?

I hope you don't think a bunch of freshmen for both Seton Hall and G'town will be better than us? Marquette also loses quite a bit.

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.. Give your homer bias a rest this off season..

Not a threat (no need for it). More like the truth, in regards to you, coward.

Moose and I were waiting at Stouts for you. Indy 97 and his girlfriend (Hoosier fan) were there too. Moose thought you didn;t show because you didn't want
to cough up the donation. :p

That too

Harrison. The replay shows that there was plenty of body contact, enough to call the foul. But that said, you can't play the game in a manner to put yourself at the mercy of a bad call or no call.

If a clean stuff comes first, as it seemed to, it's rare that a ref is going to call incidental contact afterwards.

All of the other circumstances duly noted, a no-call when you come through a shooters dominant arm is a blown call.

This is the first time in how long St. John's actually had a great chance to win the big east tournament? They didn't have a great chance in 2010, and years and years before that. That's why this loss hurts so much, for the first time in over a decade, this tournament was there for the taking, and we couldn't get it done.

The most important thing you said, Jack, was your first line: we have the same team next year. That's not necessarily a great thing.

Sure, some things will get better. Jordan, if he's here, with hopefully a smoother season for this kid who went through so much this year, could easily go to an entirely different level. Wouldn't shock me one bit to see him be a 1st team all BE performer, and he certainly looked like one in the first half yesterday and at many other times this season. Harrison, with the passion you talk about, will be a senior and on a mission.

But what about all of the problems that are likely not to change? Greene and Pointer will still be here, getting priority treatment from the coach. Jakarr Sampson didn't get better from his freshman to sophomore year, so I'm unconvinced he'll improve from this year to next. If he is what he is, then he's a good but not a top of the line high-major player. Not the player's fault, but Lavin has been entirely unable to generate any consistency from Obekpa, who will be more important next year than he has been in his first two years.

Lavin has brought in a lot of talent. It's difficult for me to imagine there being materially better talent on this roster in the near-term. This season, with that talent, was a failure. So the fundamental concern for me is, if we couldn't succeed with this level of talent, what's going to change that is going to allow us to really succeed? And I'm not measuring success by next year, with a bunch of seniors, making the step we should have made this year in making the NCAA Tournament. Because I agree with you with a few small corrections we win a few more games and make it next year. But that is not success. We are nowhere near the mix of elevating ourselves to success the way Villanova is experiencing it, and to be this far away with the talent on the roster has me wondering how we are going to get there.

Also the first time in a very long time we had to win a couple of games to play our way into an at large bid. I don't know how far back we'd have to go, but it would be a very long time.

were you there yesterday?

I was thinking about going, but really was against it. Then walking out of the garden ran into Billy Schaeffer and Kevin Barry and chatted with both. Both were down about the loss, and open to discussing what went wrong. IT was at that point I decided I paid my respects and didn't want to go to a funeral.
