Programs That Produce With Less

Willard was 82-80 in his first 5 seasons at SHU and never finished above 7th in the conference. He made the NIT once in that time. But SHU had the good, old fashioned common sense and discipline to give him TIME to develop a PROGRAM. They understood the importance and need for continuity and stability in that development, an understanding that is sorely lacking by many of the “fans” on this board.
I don't think CMA should be fired at all. I think he should be given 4-5 years to see if he can turn this program around and build us into a sustained winner. But why do people keep comparing coaches like Jay Wright and Kevin Willard to CMA? They both were at mid majors before with no prior experience coaching a High major College basketball team like Anderson has. You are confident in Anderson because of his track record right? Questioning other peoples fandom who aren't happy so far with a coach who has a great track record like everyone always brings up, is mind boggling to me.

It took Kelvin Sampson 1 year to turn Houston around. Im not saying that Anderson should be able to do that but I feel a lot of us are not liking what we are seeing so far in year two because we expect a lot from him because of his successful past
Where did I compare the two coaches other than to reference time? I get it, you don’t like CMA, but I respectfully suggest you save your agenda driven comments for posters who care about your opinion.
Why did you pick Willard then? Oh just because I don't like the results and recruiting of our coach I have an "agenda." It really is ridiculous. Why do people get so offended and think people have an agenda or what not if we don't like how the team is playing under this coach or the recruiting. It was the same thing when Mullin was coach, the defenders were appalled by the critiques. I could say the same about the constant "agenda" driven posts by the Anderson enthusiasts after every game who say "I trust in this coach and his proven track record," or when we sign a recruit "this kid looks perfect for our system," "I trust in coach Andersons track record and his eye for talent, he hasn't had a losing season." It goes both ways.

I also never said I didnt like CMA. I think hes a solid enough coach but its a what have you done for me lately business. Because of his track record I expect more from him, and to date hes done nothing to show me that I should have confidence in his recruiting and even some in game coaching.

As ive stated before I coach on Long Island and have friends who coach at major high schools and powerhouses in the city. And I can tell you for a fact that these coaches like CMA as a person but their top kids who we have been in on are wary of playing in his system. They feel like their skills will not be properly showcased for the next level. Just stating facts that I know
I picked Willard because he was a topic of discussion on the thread but I guess you didn’t notice. And yes, if you really are a coach and have all these ‘friends in high places” you should be the first person to understand it takes time and that EVERY coach deserves that time. Instead you just spew criticism with your every post. My last comment to you because frankly, I have even less respect for you as a poster now.
. I doubt many people would like the idea of a Kelvin Sampson type Coach coming to St John’s . Sampson was a known cheater at Indiana and Oklahoma before that . He nearly destroyed the Hoosiers in just a few years with his questionable Recruiting practices . Houston’s turn around likely results from Sampson ‘s resume of Winning is everything , even if it ain’t kosher . Houston has never been a model of Ethical NCAA rules . It’s a match that fits both , the Coach and the school . As for Mullin and Lavin ‘s Coaching , that’s past history . Both got the Johnnies into the NCAA ‘s . Lavin twice . But ,,putting either of them into the category of worst Coach ever , is a bit unfair . While nether got us to BE contender level during their tenure . They both had teams we could root for , at least once or twice .

One guy that fits the more with less mold is Mark Schmidt. If you are winning at St. Bonaventure you must be doing something right.

His alma mater should hire him next

Had to Google it. First assumption was that he went to Georgetown or DePaul. But yes, it would be a great move by B.C.

BC is one program that I hated when they were a big rival, but unlike UCONN, Syracuse, or Georgetown, I'd really like to see them do well. SJU-BC were great battles in the 80s.

Not that they were a perennial Big East power team, they did have a great run for a decade under Al Skinner, but it's amazing how much Boston College fell off once they joined the ACC. They haven't made the NCAA tournament since 2009, and haven't won a NCAA tournament game since 2007. They left the Big East in 2005.
Took Willard 7 years to be relevant in B.E. Two decades later we're still waiting. And some posters lack patience?
Vinny
Decades yes
But we are focusing on our current head coach who had had a mere 20 months - so
Let’s have patience and enjoy the kids who by and large care, want to win snd are busting their butts.

Time and love everybody
Fifth Dimension

Go Storm - play your best ball as we get deeper into 20-21 season.

All the best!

Speaking of BC, I always enjoyed our games against them. I always wondered why they fired Al Skinner and why he never got another big time job after BC. And am I the only one who was puzzled during the Jarvis years... why BC had a coach with a NY accent and SJU had a coach with a Boston accent?

I remember his name coming up as someone we wanted Mullin to bring in as an experienced assistant. Didn't realize this but after BC he became an assistant at Bryant College and then head coach at Kennesaw State until 2019.
