It's a tough one (all road games in Big East are) but I agree that our pressure D and ability to speed them up just may frustrate and confuse them. Pipkins, Duke, White, Diallo basically all of the guys who have the ball the majority of the time have had turnover issues at different points this year. Hopefully our guys are prepared for this one and show defensive intensity right from the tip and doin't try to play catch up in the 2nd half. Getting the "good" Rutherford on defense could go a long way in helping us along with Heron hopefully building off his positive outing against DePaul.

I know Providence has been good in conference play and the Dunk is tough but this feels like the type of game an NCAA tournament team needs to win. I don't know if we are one, I'm just saying that we need to steal a couple of road wins somewhere and this feels like an opportunity. Big difference between 2-3 and 1-4 obviously.
We can beat them for sure. Beating teams like WVU and Arizona weren’t a fluke. When we play our game and defend and rebound plus make a decent percentage of shots, we can beat a lot of teams. Hopefully we continue back on the course we were on before our mini-big East slide. Take it to the friars!
Watched most of their games this year. Can't repeat our defnse allowing guard penetration with handoffs to Young or Watson Diallo, their best player, tough all around but has been bad on foul line. Their spark plug has been White
Duke can take you inside and has decent outside shot. Not going to be easy Wednesday.

Beating Cooley up there would be very sweet; he's got a thing about St. John's for some reason.

I want revenge also, it seems like even when we've had decent squads they always knocked us out early in the Big East Tourny.

He just seems like the kind of person that needs to hate. It seems like that's what motivates him. When we play them next month at CA, I guarantee that he will complain (subtly or otherwise) about the contest not being at MSG.

Unfortunately, those tactics have generally been effective, in getting his team to play their best ball. That's his biggest strength as a coach, along with being a good recruiter (because honestly, his game coaching leaves quite a bit to be desired, IMO).

As for this upcoming game, take a look at the six games that Providence plays, leading in to the CA rematch, next month:

@#25 Creighton
@#18 Seton Hall
#14 Villanova
@#5 Butler
#25 Creighton
@Xavier

So, yes, they're 3-1 in the league, but things could start to get really ugly for them, if they don't beat us on Wednesday (I mean, they could get ugly anyway, but much less so if they beat us). They need this one just as much as we do, maybe more so, given their poor out of conference performance. Even their 3 Big East wins were due in part, to a gift early schedule. Give them credit for running with it, but they are still not on anyone's bubble.

Believe it or not, Providence has a worse FG% than we do as well as a worse FT% and are one spot above us in 3pt shooting. They’re a poor offensive team too. We can win this one because we are a better defense and rebounding when we play well. A must win if we want to get back on track. Need to win these types on the road.

While we still show as best rebounding team in Big East, that is totally based on our strong rebounding in our out of conference schedule. We have been pretty decisively outrebounded in all 4 of our Big East games. Providence is usually a poor shooting team and somewhat turnover prone. We'll need to pressure them all game and have a decent shooting night if we want to steal one on the road. Would be nice to pick up a couple of early fouls on Watson who can be tough down low when he gets going but is also foul prone. Would also be nice to see Roberts have a bounce back game like Champagnie did against Depaul.

Is the vulgarity really necessary???

question for the Arkansas fans who have become St. John's fans in support of coach:

Did Arkansas press full court and trap half court last year against Providence in the NIT game? PC only had 9 turnovers for the game and Arkansas only had 5 steals. Either PC figured something out or Arkansas did not turn up the heat.

Thanks in advance.

Cooley and his staff most definitely did not like Lavin and his staff. The recruiting battles had much to do with that IMO, as Lavin was able to pull Sampson and Sanchez who Easy Ed badly wanted.

He seemed to have issues with Mullin at the outset as well, whether because of the Ponds recruitment (who Cooley also desperately wanted) and that game we beat them up in Prov where Lovett went nuts and Mullin and Cooley apparently had an interaction after the game. But by the end of Mullin's tenure I think they actually got along. I saw them woofing it up before one game and Cooley is a guy who no doubt appreciates the history of the Big East and if you do you have to give Mullin love because he is one of the guys who built the league.

I have no doubt that Cooley is a Mike Anderson fan for a number of reasons.

From what I remember about that game we played different defenses and didn't press the whole game. The biggest thing in that game is Daniel Gafford, who was the best player on the team and our only true big man, elected not to play in the NIT to focus on the NBA draft, so we played small ball that game and really pushed the pace and Providence couldn't keep up with us.

I've watched Providence this year, and not impressed at all, even in their Big East wins they barely won those games. This is a very winnable game for this St. John's team, I like the new lineup with Heron at the 4 and Dunn starting at the 2 spot. The shooting seemed to improve against DePaul, if they can carry that over and play how they played against DePaul that will be enough to beat this Providence team.

On page 2 of this thread, two of the same posters thanking Panther2 for admonishing CMA TIME, thanked mjmaherjr for predicting we would “f*ck them up” when referring to Providence. Not sure of the rationale but there it is.

I must have missed the post after the DePaul game. Nothing personal, but I find referring to any man as a "b---h" very disrespectful.

CMA, I appreciate your posts and haven't seen you post anything radical. There's always going to be that pecking order and double standard unfortunately. I mean it is a sports forum after all...it's basically a bar scene only online. This is why Barstool Sports is so successful...they don't try to be like Disney ESPN...they are real and they don't care. Comes across as more authentic.

Anyway, PC has been really tough for us since the Lavin days and I'm not hinting at any correlation there. I wanted Lavin gone. But when he was here they seemed beatable. For some reason they have had our number for a while now. Especially at PC. As others have said, we will have to win some of these road games and it's likely not coming against SHU, Butler, Marquette, Creighton, etc. Gotta do it now. 2-3 and we still have a pulse. 1-4 and you aren't climbing out of that this year.

I was one of the posters who thanked MJM for his we're going to f*** them up post and also thanked Panther2 for his post. The difference to me is MJM's post used profanity in a non-personal way whereas CMA's post came off to me as personally demeaning to Cooley, which I find unnecessary; so Panther's post struck a cord. But I get how CMA could view it as hypocritical and will try to be more judicious in my "thank yous" going forward. Nothing personal intended CMA. We're all Johnnie fans rooting for our team in our own way.

friars board saying Reeves in concussion protocol. Also saying Diallo hurt his hand vs. Butler. Finished the game with fingers taped up. Not sure how much it helps us but can't hurt. Go to the dunk game every year with my son, one of the loudest arenas I have been in and I go back to the old garden. Very tough atmosphere
