Not going to be easy IMO they have I think 3 guys who are 6'10+ and have some meat on them. Going to be a tall task for Roberts who is our only guy with any decent height right now. They don't appear to be a particularly good 3 PT shooting team, and I'm sure they know we only have 1 sorta big man so I'm sure they will attack inside, but it would be nice to not see an opponent shoot 40%+ from 3 for once. If we are going to have any kind of decent season we are absolutely going to need to stop allowing every team seemingly to kill us from 3. This is not a season where we will blow through OOC. We will get several blowouts and lose against a few cupcakes I'm sure since we are rebuilding, but I just want to see our defense improve, chemistry improve, and I want to see real development.

I just scrolled over to FS1 to see if the game is on TV tonight. Happily it’s on FS1 so I can record it. I then look at the preview and it says “The Red Storm host the Bears in a season opening contest at Madison Square Garden.”

Boy, I sure the Bears and the FS1 crew got the memo that the game is over at the Carnesseca Arena in Queens. Hope they are not too disappointed.

It also said it was on FS1 in the title of the thread ;)

But...I looked for the game on TV before coming to this thread. I should have looked here first. ;)

Mike, none of those big guys played in their exhibition, although that is not to say they won't play against us. Mercer shot 31 threes in that game and made 12 which is 39%, not bad. Five different guys made threes and one kid made 5 of them. We better defend the three well tonight because that is a big part of their game if their exhibition is any indication.

Thanks for the info, I was looking at last season's team stats and I believe they shot 34% as a team from 3 all year. I'm not sure why we defend the 3 so poorly so consistently. Many games it feels like we can't buy a 3 with 4 and 5 star kids shooting them, yet we have guys in D2 and low D1 making them like free throws against us consistently. I suppose it's the slow rotation, but isn't that fixable? Can't remember the last time an opponent bombed from 3 against us where it wasn't an issue at all (at least with these cupcake teams). Maybe it was recent, but doesn't seem it lol. Hopefully we build up a decent lead and it would be nice to see us maintain it and avoid letting up on the gas. Every Villanova game I watch they rarely have that issue...they are extremely consistent in terms of playing hard and alert. They can put two good halves together. In recent past we seem to have slow starts out of the gate and may only pull away in the final 5-6 minutes or so. I hope even in losses we leave everything out there.

Yes, but all your recent memories are with another coach. Can’t link our past performance to what we are going to do moving forward. I’d certainly feel better with Dunn and Steere who likely add 2 starting-caliber guys to our roster but it’s a new coach and a new team. We will defend differently, rebound differently and play offense in an entirely new system. Let’s see how it goes. As many of the Arkansas fans have said, Mike Anderson teams generally perform well against the teams they are “supposed to” beat. This is our first real coach in a long time.

Agreed...no clue if CMA works out or not. As I've said, if he can recruit well I think he does well enough here to get an extension. If he can't consistently get 4 star level kids from HS it will be tough. But regardless, at least we all know he will be doing everything he can and we all know he's a real coach with a proven track record. Not a sexy pick for coach, but a blue collar guy. We've tried the flashy guys and the recruiters but that didn't work out. Should be interesting to see what a blue collar, gritty guy gets us.

Ryan Cummings who was Mercer's best player last year averaging 34 mpg and almost 18 ppg only played 17 minutes in their exhibition. Looks like they have some new faces, including a 6'6" frosh named Glisson who had a very good HS career in Georgia and this kid Prendergrast who hit 5 threes in their exhibition. I expect Mercer team might wind up mid pack in their conference (although picked 8th). Fully expect us to win but will be pleasantly surprised if we blow them out.

I will add that looking at our potential roster for league play, we could actually have a very solid starting 5 of Dunn, Heron, Figueroa Roberts and Steere with plenty of depth off the bench. I know it’s early but Josh Roberts looks really good early on. He had a double-double against Temple and 14/7 in our first exhibition. I know it’s real early but he’s a far cry from the kid we saw last season and if he continues to improve could possibly be an athletic and solid starting PF for us. We really need to try to hold serve early on this season, hope Dunn gets cleared ASAP and eventually add Steere. I’m not convinced we will be as bad as people think with all of our guys eligible and healthy.

We will see...giving up tons of 3's has been an ongoing issue and continued vs. a D2 school in Queens. Size still a glaring issue. We historically have played down to competition under both Lavin and Mullin which has been about the past decade. Not saying anything earth-shattering here, those above are facts. Yes Anderson is new...and I know it was the 1st exhibition, but we again gave up tons of 3's which was the same issue we've had for a while now. I will need to see some solid improvement before those concerns are alleviated. Let's start tonight by defending well and not allowing 40% or better from 3. I also hope to see CMA stress scoring in the paint more. We got lucky LJ and Heron were making their shots, but there will be plenty of games one if not both are not making them. Must not fall in love with jumpers. Even if you don't make your layups at least you will draw fouls. One thing I will say is that there already appears to be much better rebounding on both ends than any time under Mullin. Hope that continues.

From the Rumble Guys:

The Bears lost their two top forwards last season in Fardaws Aimaq and Cory Kilby. Aimaq was the leading rebounder on a team that struggled mightily on the glass, especially the on the defensive side of the ball. His five rebounds per game will surely be missed on a team that finished 299th in the country in rebounds per game.

The bad news is that the tallest person the Bears played during the exhibition game was 6’6” James Glisson III, an energetic freshman that Mercer was excited to land late in the spring.

The strength of this Mercer team is found in the backcourt. The Bears four highest scorers last year were all guards; three of those players are back.

The main focus for St. John’s will be senior guard Ross Cummings. Last season, he led the team with 17 points per game. He also shot nearly 40% from three-point last season. He was named to the 2018-19 All-SoCon Second Team for his play. The Johnnies better be sure to contain Cummings.
