Potential Grad Transfers

Redmannorth Wrote: Roberts is a little too thin , Earlington is making a huge jump in competition and Diakite is coming off a terrible injury. Am I happy they are all a part of the team, you bet, but truth be told I expect a very minimal contribution from each of the 3 next season. I am looking for much fewer blocks but hopefully good lower post d and solid boards to compensate for the loss of Owens since I am hoping they will be in a better position to board. It will be interesting to say the least.

I agree we have to limit our expectations on the newcomers. That said, my gut tells me Roberts surprises and gives us 6-8 minutes.

I like your posts Deleware.
But Desperate?
It’s that serious?
Wow.
Yes, it is that serious, general. We aren't Kentucky or Duke: Once Ponds leaves, there aren't two more of him ready to take his place. But we can make finding the next Ponds a whole lot easier on ourselves by having a great season. And for that to happen we need a big. This team has a lot of talent, but also one gigantic hole to fill.

I think he can play well for us if we run run run.

+1 Agree 100% with LJSA. I don't like the word desperate either, but there is no question that a grad transfer big is crucial for our success next year. If we get him, I don't see us missing the dance; if we don't, will be difficult to make it as we'd need contributions from Roberts or Diakite that are not realistic to expect next year. This will affect not just next year, but the next few years afterwards. Let's go Chris & Matt - reel him in!

To add that next year is the only year that on paper the team looks like it could be a better than average BE team with both Ponds and Simon as difference makers. Another productive big would go a long way.

Right now after next year it looks more like a close to .500 in conference roster at this point.

Hope springs eternal.

Year 5 success is pretty hard to predict given the roster turnover but staff trying to stay ahead of the game with transfers like David Caraher and other 3 star talents to balance the studs they are pursuing like Kofi, who is the lynchpin of the class imo. Other impact players would follow if he commits early. If he doesn't or goes elsewhere then the struggles could continue in attracting the next star.

The need for an immediately eligible power forward - center student athlete seems pretty clear. This morning I went through the list provided by Verbal Commits in search of this type of player. There were 33 names on the list. It appears there is more to Matt's job than meets the eye. K. Yawke was the highest rated player in terms of stars at 3.3. There are 10 players rated 3.0 stars or higher. Stars from high school are not necessarily an accurate measure of a transfer's potential contribution as popular Wyatt Walker and Femi Olujobi are both listed as 2*. The following transfers are listed as power forwards or centers, were rated as 3* coming out of high school, and are immediately eligible.

Name Current School Height Weight
Ellis Dozier Ohio 6-8 218
Michael Finke Illinois 6-10 230
Connor McDougal New Mexico 6-9 240
Josh Martin Cal Poly 6-8 212
Malik Martin South Florida 6-11 220
Tory Miller-Stewart Colorado 6-9 246
Mawdo Sallah Kansas State 6-8 225
Casey Schlatter Drake 6-10 220
Jacquil Taylor Purdue 6-10 240
Kassoum Yakwe Saint John's 6-7 210

Which ones should Matt call?
at this point as a grad transfer what they were ranked coming out of HS doesn't matter. Can you get their stats from last year for each guy by chance ?
If no one does this before I get back from some errands I will do it later.
Not sure who compiled this list and I apologize for bringing a name up twice but this name should also be added:
Abdul Lewis NJIT 6'10" 225

Luv Abdul’s presence under the boards, 5.6 D-Rebs, 8.8 T-Rebs in 29 minutes? The guy seems to ‘eat’ rebounds and shoots 52% from 2-pt range. Let’s get him.

A local big man with good numbers can never be mentioned enough times.

Thanks Andrew. Lewis’s #s seem to stand out . I’ll say it again, the guy seems to eat rebounds. Hoping we’re in on this guy.

Abdul Lewis was not listed on the Verbal Commit's Transfer list. Maybe NJIT did not give Abdul his release. Maybe the coach walked Abdul off the ledge. I don't know, but does not appear to be my mistake.

Once you've played even 1/2 a college season, HS ratings don't matter match. IMO you have to gauge statistics against the level of competition they are playing against. Height and weight are important, but so are athelticism and strength and basketball skills. Appears on here we salivate over 13 ppg and 11 rebounds per game, but if it's a 6'7" guy playing against 6'3 centers at D2, it doesn't matter much. I am confident our staff targets guys they believe will be assets at this level in the Big East, but in general, for me, i don't try to figure out who can and can't play based on videos or stats against what may be inferior competition. I think its preferable to target guys who played in major conferences and showed promise or put up numbers vs. top teams and players
