Postseason Expectations

The thread is for expectations, not what we would accept as a positive outcome to the season.

I expect a BET championship. Why not? The games are in MSG and we will be a favorite in any match up.

I also expect an elite 8. Maybe asking a lot, but he'll, we're ranked 6th in the country.

Coming into the season I probably would have been satisfied with top 4 in BE and 1 NCAA tournament win. Hard to say the season isn't a success regardless of what happens from here on out. I've thoroughly enjoyed the ride and as coach says, we're just getting started.

Good point. I expect a tough BE final and tough sweet sixteen. Would rather win the latter as there's more on the line so that's my expectations, BET final (where they'll likely come up against someone hungrier than them) and elite 8.

My issue is that I really don't know how good we are. Sweet sixteen is hard to get to no matter how good you are. I will take one win, the rest is gravy. Next year I fully expect a final four.

Watching same thing. Neither team can run with us. Neither team can creat off the dribble. Neither team can shoot really well and require open shots earned via their half court offense to make them. Neither team capable of defending like we do. They’re clones of each other pretty much.

Any team with suspect guard play, even slightly, is going to have a hard time beating us.

This is a GREAT point. There have been several times in each of the last few games where we bumped somebody hard on the perimeter with no call and while I was glad we got away with it, it was hard not to think about this exact thing. You get some Mountain West crew or whatever, we're going to have 3 guys sitting with 2 fouls in the first half.

Agree completely. Think I posted back in July about the strong potential this team will have to make it to final four and beyond. Potential hopefully now becoming reality. Obviously still have to play and win but the potential is absolutely there just as good as any of the contenders.
 
I suggest four threads. Postseason Expectations, Postseason Hopes, Postseason Dreams (we better all be on the same side on this one) and Postseason Reality Test. ;)
 
We are clearly the best team in the Big East but winning three games in three days against different opponents is never an easy task. We could get beat by a Providence, a Xavier or a UConn who we might meet in the first or second game. If we get that far we will have to likely get by Creighton or Marquette who are quite capable. I expect for us to win the Big East tournament but anything is possible.

As far as the NCAA tournament goes 25 years without a victory has been far worse than anything I could have imagined on the day that we got upset by Gonzaga as a two seed back in 2000 in the round of 32.

This year my expectations, like it was back in 2000, are pretty high. Us getting knocked out in a first round matchup would be utterly heartbreaking and a loss like we had in 2000 in the round of 32 would be very disappointing, but still would not invalidate a great season.

That said, if we don't make the Sweet 16 we will have severely underachieved in the tournament.

However, if we make the sweet sixteen we will be four wins from winning it all. At that point, our draw, our health, our karma and random factors such as luck, the way the ball bounces and foul calls will determine how special this team really can be.

My great hope is that we make it to the Final Four. I would have characterized that as a total pipedream entering the season, but now anything seems possible.

It’s all going to come down to who we play. If we get to the sweet 16 and face some Cinderella 14 seed, of course the expectations will change and a loss there would leave a sour taste in everyone’s mouth.

For now I’ll say 2nd weekend with NO CEILING for how far this team can go!
 
I personally think we can go to the final 4 , but would be more than happy with making the sweet 16 .

Our 3 point shooting shouldn’t be the worry , because our defense is so good that will keep us close in every game .

Every team in the tournament is really good . What worries me , and should be in the back of everyone’s head is our Free throw shooting.

If we can’t hit free throws down the stretch in a close game , and there will be close games in the tournament , that could come back to bite us in the ass .

What a season. I hope I never wake up from this dream
 
I've waited a long time to see us win an NCAA tournament game, so I'll be happy to see that. But St. John's is in position to not only make the NCAA tournament with a high seed, but also be favored in the first 2 games, at least. So with that, really have to say it would be disappointing to not reach the Sweet 16.

I'd also be ecstatic to make the finals of the BE tourney but that's not a given either. We haven't been there in forever.

I expect to win the B.E. Championship, we are undefeated after all.

Beat me if you can, survive if I let you.

i was in this mindset for a bit... as the success we are currently experiencing...seems way too soon. BE Regular Season Title wrapped before the last game? Top 10 ranking? MSG sell outs...? c'mon... not sure how many expected THIS success THIS soon... even Rick has said he didn't....

Then you look at "how"... we pieced together and All-Star Transfer Portal class... coupled with the remarkable improvement of Zuby and RJ...

We signed the #1 Transfer... a Proven All-BE player... probably the best glue guy this side of Dom Pointer in Scott... and a dynamo guard who will win the College Dunk Contest if he participates.... 10+ years experience....that is a "HAUL"....Why not Final 4 this season???

If we have a Better Top7 next year... i mean... we're Top 5 all season...

My only worry is that we didn't beat any good teams out of conference. So it is hard for me to tell how good we really are.
