(POST GAME) @Xavier (Cintas Ctr), Sun. Jan. 5, 4:30pm, FOX / 970AM

We need to win two of these next three games to salvage this conference season.

Earlington is quickly becoming my favorite player on this team
Brings his hard hat and lunch pail to work every single day
May not be the most talented player but you gotta respect his effort

Lol! We were picked to finish last or next to last by everyone. We are 11-4 and have beaten two top 25 teams and came within a couple of field goals of beating a top 10 team in Butler.
We lost by the point spread only because Figueroa and Heron continue to play just average basketball. Maybe Matt scouting Steere for just the 4 minutes he played at NCST was a premature offer. This team has actually over performed given the complete lack of shooters and a pure point guard. The litmus test for this team is how certain scurilous fans have been reacting to St. John's being a too 50 team prior to this loss. Screwballs like Marillac have upped their insults and the early success has driven FUN back into his man cave with curtains drawn.
All this team needs is for a couple of guys to start playing up to their potential.

Hard to imagine early on that Heron and Figgy would fail to show the leadership and consistency needed for this team to succeed. Of course Herons injury plays a part but he seems not to have reverted yo his SEC self and seems marred in last years funk. Figgy is a little too much playground.

As expected the defense will keep us in most games. But the missed shots and free throws will be a bane all year it seems. Unfortunate.

For coach’s first year, an NIT bid would be a laudable achievement so let’s hope that we can do that.

Can you imagine if Ian Steere ever starts to play at the Duke's level ! Watch out.

Maybe both players are just over rated. They have had plenty of time to show they can play at this level to date they have been average at best if this is the best that they are capable of it is going to be a long season again with not even an Nit bid We can not expect players to play above their talent level

I agree with everything you’ve said 72’. They have over achieved this season. If we can beat West Virginia and Arizona then we should be able to finish .500 in the Big East. We have put ourselves in hole now going 0-2. And yes we came within a couple of baskets of Top 10 Butler after being down big. But, the fact of the matter is we had 5 or 7 point lead in that game with 3:30 left and we should have won. The fact that the team has overachieved this season has heightened expectations and rightfully so. We need Heron and Figueroa to step up and we need to win two of these next three very winnable games. Steere has been a major disappointment that we can’t even get him in there for 10 minutes to body up against a guy like Tyrique Jones today. If we can get that Ty McMillan JUCO kid who fits our style better maybe we should jettison Steere after this season. Anyway, we can be 0-5 or 1-4 if we hope to accomplish anything this season. By that I mean making a post season tournament, NIT or NCAA. We can win games against quality opponents with this group. We’ve proven that. So let’s go get these next three against the lower third of the conference and prove that we do t belong there. If we don’t , the season is over.

Last year's team had a great starting 5, and nothing else. This year's team has 10 or 11 guys with similar skills, most of whom are probably one notch below Big East level.

This is where I disagree. We have two guys who have proven they can play significant minutes and score 14-15 ppg in high major play, but we are playing as if we have 10 or 11 players of roughly similar ability. We don't. Can't win that way in BE imho.
Yes, they're more talented then the other guys, but like you said, they average 14-15 ppg. I think, with the lack of offensive ability that the rest of these guys seem to have, that they need to average closer to 18-20 ppg, for us to be successful, and they seem incapable of lifting their scoring to that level, at least consistently. I know we almost beat Butler with those two combining for 0, but I think that was a fluke.

I'd suggest we'd give them the rest of the year before deciding they are "overrated". They're certainly not over supported here. These are two great kids who decided to come back and play for a new coach despite lots of uncertainty. Both have lots of past success on their side, with Mustapha having been all SEC as a soph after an excellent freshman year and Figgy having a great freshman year himself. All athletes have ups and downs. We're going nowhere w/o them being successful this year.

I wouldn’t Use the word overrated. Maybe overwhelmed. Forever grateful that they are here still. I just think as fans maybe we had too high expectations since they were supposed to be 2 top 10 conference players. Maybe that was unfair of them, particularly with an almost all new supporting cast. But there’s a lot of basketball left so let’s just see what develops.
I may be in the minority here and do not mean to be critical, but LJ & Mustapha played 28 and 23 minutes respectively. While neither had great games, neither were they bad. Bottom line, I don't think we can be successful with these two guys playing those kind of limited minutes in BE play absent injury or foul trouble.
Agree with your premise that we need them to win consistently but only if they play like 2nd team Big East stars. Right now both look vastly overrated and barely honorable mention type players. Frankly, I find it amazing that we have been able to play close games with their sub-par performances - a testament to the heart of the 2nd tier players. It’s what gives me optimism. I think once he brings in some more talent we will be fine and, in meantime, we will scrap and claw.

5 for 38 on 3's the past 2 games............13%

I bet there's no high school teams that shoots that bad, dang......

Disappointing loss. Team looked flat, and couldn't shoot.
Take a breath. Better days ahead. I trust this coach, this staff and this team.

Watch out Georgetown!

Well, I think we couldn't make a shot, and sometimes that makes a team look like they are flat. We still had 12 steals, won the turnover battle by 12, held Xavier to OK shooting percentages, so I don't think we lacked energy. We just looked flat, because nothing was going in.

Not attacking you, Knight, I've just always hated saying that a team is flat, when they are just not making shots. If some of those shots went in, we'd be talking about what great energy the team had tonight.

Point taken. :)

Welcome to conference play.

I love this group and will continue to applaud their effort. That said, we will need a talent upgrade to break through to the top half of the conference.

Beyond shooting, now that we're playing the big boys, rebounding is an issue. We were out-rebounded by West Virginia, Butler and Xavier. This is why you can't take too much away from the cupcake games. We will win some conference games, but it will take until the 2021-22 season before CMA has his team on the floor.

Maybe I do agree with you. It’s scary but let’s face there is a possibility we can only win 4 games in confr. Now I would love to see us string 4-5 games in a row but how to we do that with much improved shooting which up till now we haven’t
What is going on with steere ,was that just a bad decision to recruit him it seems so We need a lot of this to get better if we are at best going to make 500;in confr play
