LJ also looked gassed in second half but nice to see the team strategy working especially against a team that is built for strong second half: "And despite some late-breaking runs, the Mountaineers (7-1) were clearly gassed heading into the game’s later stages."

My bad on our turnovers, my point was that we had 9 unforced turnovers. Not to bad. I like the ratio of steals/turnovers we had on them. Signifies we are playing tough "D".

We were pressuring their guards and when they got the ball down low we were trying to collapse on their bigs. That's what caused the majority of the turnovers. We were clearly the smaller team, but we were also clearly the quicker team; with hands, anticipating the lanes and foot speed. That's what won the game for us.
 
I felt that Dunn also looked better as a point guard yesterday. He’s getting more comfortable there which is good for us.

Agree, great job stripping the ball when their big men brought the ball down.

I feel the same. After watching him the past few games, it seems like he's still making the same poor decisions when driving to the basket. What I mean is his body positioning going to the basket is not to his strength (body control to be able to finish). Additionally, you could see that he's forcing shot that he shouldn't be taking which is part of the decision process.[/quote]
At this point, he should be able to make a righty layup...took ball to hoop late in game and awkwardly put up a lefty layup

Dude. I thought the same thing. There was a point in the 2nd, I think after a timeout, Roberts leaped High over everyone and came down with a 2 handed monster rebound. The kid looked possessed when he can down with it.

15 steals and the most important one Dunn's steal off Culver's rebound with about 23 seconds remaining.. They would have had the last shot. Talk about quickness.

Was at the game and had a busy weekend so didn't get to post until now. What a game! I knew deep down we could win a game like this if we wanted it badly enough and scrapped for every loose ball. Now they see they can do it. This is the sign of good coaching...winning games like this with a few very talented guys and a bunch of so-so recruits against a clearly better and bigger team. We lose this by 20 under Mullin without the rebounds or the intensity. Seemed to be about 75% SJ fans but credit WVU fans who did get loud at times.

Wins like this have me riding high for long time. It's not like WVU is Duke by any means, but I have a feeling they end up in the top 25 by season's end. I also don't want to hear about WVU fans whining about refs when we had like 8 calls consecutively against us in under a minute. We did a great job finally making FT's and causing havoc on defense. The only real obvious negatives were Heron whom I'm really concerned about now (how many games can you disappear before it becomes the norm?) and our inability to make open 3's. We were shooting 8% at one point and if I were WVU I would've let us shoot anything beyond the arc open or not. We are that bad at shooting 3's. But we did enough to win and that's the important part.

What a fun ride back on the train! Love this coaching staff and team. Low expectations but performing like a team expecting to be around in the postseason.
 
Just a thought regarding the type of fouls we are committing versus last year. Last year we seemed to always be getting called for hand check/reaching in fouls. This year we appear to be doing less defending with our "hands on", rather using positioning and lower body keeping hand off/arms out to deflect. It is shown in the number of free throw we are taking versus opposition. after 10 games we have over 40 more F/T's than opposition. Last year over 34 games opposition shot 160 more F/T's than us. Also our rebounding versus opposition is +4 per game versus last year where we were -6 per game. These are trends to follow through conference play.
 
Our shooting was bad. We won on D , and toughness. Went after every loose ball and never let up.
 
Was out and about today wearing St John’s gear. As I walked past a small group, I heard “Great win yesterday! We were at MSG, it was awesome!”
 
This team can be a very  dangerous foe to other Big East teams once two players join the team.  One is the critical addition of big man Ian Steere.  The other is the return of Mustapha Heron. 
In this game against a very well coached and talented team the most important contributions came from second string players.  Neither Figueroa nor Heron have  been playing like All Big East players.  Except for Sears everyone else has been over-achieving. 
The coaching has been terrific and has silenced critics on the "other board".
Again, when Steere physically joins the team and Heron mentally rejoins the team I think we can beat anyone in the conference.
The WV game may be a watershed win.

This might be the first time we actually clearly overachieve in a season in about 10 years. By the way, speaking of coaching I sat very close to the SJ bench and was just watching and listening. These guys are all business...no jokes or laughter. CMA will get on players for taking stupid shots...he doesn't play around. If someone misses a defensive assignment he will get in their ear. Forget who, but one of our players got to a ball first for a rebound but only used 1 hand and WVU tipped it away and got it back. Next timeout, CMA went over to him and was clearly gesturing with his arms to go up strong and use two hands and hold onto the ball. That was refreshing because in a season without many negatives, that's been one. We are super aggressive and active on the boards but sometimes we lose too many because we don't totally secure them and the opponent grabs it back.

I don't thing over a full season players can overachieve. Good coaching and personal effort and work allow players to work to their potential.

Not only did MSG raise beer prices to $14 a beer but they took away BPA from 101 to 114 so now I have to walk entire MSG next time so see if it's gone from everywhere. It's a fucking travesty
