Back when i played guard in high school I hated guys like Posh and Williams and even Dunn.

just bringing the ball up the court was a freaking chore; if it didn't get stolen, you were exhausted by the time you got the ball into the front court.

I just love having defenders on our team. I'd rather see a dribble strip-steal and an easy layup than anything else.

Did you play for the Kingsmen during the Mike Dunleavy era?
I was in the military in South Carolina in 1972 when he was a freshman. He was preceded by another New York kid, John Roach, as coach McGuire's lead guard. I was lucky to meet up with the fellow Kingsman back then at one of the practices.
Solid game lots of contributors good ball movement my one criticism is I want to see us rebound better[/quo

Rebounding off foul shots needs to be more focused!!! Must engage/body the player and then go get the ball. Too many times we assume the FT being made and just step in the lane!!!!

Class of 72-

I overstated my post; I should have said "back when I played guard in high school intramurals/CYO".....

Nazareth High School in East Flatbush, back then Xaverian Brothers, '67-71' all male school had some decent BB teams, I tried out for the Freshman team didn't make it. Tried out for JV didn't make it. Never tried out for Varsity.

Our Varsity coach Jim McMullen, was a Johnny from early 60's I believe he was on Lapchick teams and very good, not a star. He was a tough no nonsense coach and kicked very talented players off Varsity if they did not comport with his Bobby Knight style of coaching (a much toned down version).

Thus, Intramurals had some very talented players, some kicked off Varsity (a couple of starters), and others who didn't play Varsity not lack of talent, but because they were not the coach's type, so the joke was the winner of our Intramural Championship could have beaten our Varsity. (not really true).

The Nazareth class of '72 (the year after I graduated) won the City Championship, a great team led by Mike Dunleavy Sr., and some D 1 players, but Mike was the star and went to S.Carolina.

Fondest memories of sports at Nazareth back then was kicking Xaverian's ass (Chris Mullin's school, later on), every year in every sport. We hated the Clippers. SINK THE CLIPPERS!

CYO at St. Jeromes had awesome teams too back in the 60's and 70's. Remember seeing John Candelaria play back then at Foster Park.

Roche was on the Nets when I first started following games and the ABA Nets were my team. Remember him fondly. He was there when Dr J joined and I believe he was on the championship team, as was of course Paultz, man!

Frank McGuire a former SJU Coach before he went to NC and then SC , had a real pipeline to the Catholic HS players back then ... Roche , Tom Owens , Bobby Cremins , Mike Dunleavy , plus a few more I probably forgotten were all excellent Players . John Roche was named ACC Player of the Year once over Charlie Scott . Which is saying something . SCarolina played in the ACC back then . You could arguably make the Case that MCGuire outrecruited Louie back then but , does it matter ? Early Louie Teams were good , not Champion level but , good . Joe DePre , Ralph Abraham , George Johnson , Mel Davis , Frankie Alagia, Beaver Smith , Reggie Carter, Bernard Rencher , etc . It wasn’t until the Mullin and Berry , Jackson Years that we got to Top tier of the BE and Nationally .

Just to add to your list of NY Catholic school recruits who played at South Carolina - Bob Carver, Brian Winters and Kevin Joyce, from Molloy, Tom Riker, from St. Dominic's, and perhaps his last NY recruit; Mike Doyle, from Mount St. Michael's(?). McGuire went after Paultz, I think, but lost out to Louie.

Thanks Vegan . I had forgotten more than a few . Frank McGuire was another SJU Administration failure , besides the Lapchick fiasco . I believe the story was that MCGuire wanted some Medical Benefits from SJ to cover his Son , who had health issues . Obviously , they didn’t and he left to go to NC first and.then SC . Big Mistake .

In fairness, I think the story is that Frank McGuire left in part because daughter's (maybe son's?) serious health problems would be benefitted by warmer climate.

What a coach almost .700 winning percentage. Won games everywhere he went.

Including a perfect 32-0 at NC NCAA and Acc Champs
