(POST-GAME) St. Francis (Brooklyn), Tues., Nov. 23, 7p, FS-2

Had a amusing thought . Who wins this game ?           Champ ,,Posh , Moore, Cole, Wusu , Earlington , Dunn, Robert’s , Williams, etc.   VS.                          Champ, Posh , Soriano , Mathis , Smith , Wheeler , Coburn , Stanley , Wusu , etc                                  Not sure of the outcome .  Which asks the question ?   Have we improved enough to Finish 4 th again or better in the BE ?   Judging what we have seen so far from our team and what our BE rivals have done so far , it’s also a interesting question .

Wusu plays hard.
Wusu is not a guard
Wusu made some nice passes.
Wusu made some terrible passes.

Our full court press is not effective.
Our switching man is leaving too many open players.

Our bigs do not play big.
Our bigs do not receive the ball inside.
The bloom is off the rose with Stanley.
If niywe can’t play in this game,  when can he play?
A harsh dose of reality. We have 2 very good ballplayers and a bunch of role players. If one of our two very good ballplayers is out or has an off game, we can loose to almost anyone...except maybe Baruch and MVS. As for Nyiwe, I hate to say "I told you(not you) so". Wait, who am I kidding?, I love to say "I told you so"!

I agree exactly.  It would be nice to have at least one more additional very good player.  We still really need a player that can rise up and get their own shot.  Champ is an amazing player and is the focus of every team but has a hard time getting his own shot.  With all that being said, I think this team gets better as the season goes on, so as long as we continue to win in our out of conference we should be okay.  I do think getting into the tournament is not as sure a thing as I thought as we were just heading into the season.

champ got his points but boy his shooting has been off. even missing free throws.  only positive for me is that mathis played well.
Even worse, he looked disinterested. I know he's got a cool demeanor, but I really expected him to take charge at numerous points during the game when we were down. It never happened.
so you just closed your eyes and turned the tv off for the last 10 minutes of the game or what happened? Really stupid comment by you

Julian had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal in the last 10 and a half minutes of the game when we went from down 7 to a 6 point win.  Aside from that, solid point.

Last night we missed Crime Dog McGriff.

Not so sure.  He's shooting  under 40 percent...and 33 percent from three.   That's 12.8 ppg4.5 rebounds and3.8 assists per game.  Not bad, but he's not a savior either.

This one!..... watched the beginning of the Bing/UConn game.... obviously the Bing team was overmatched.... but McGriff looked extremely competent handling the ball and distributing (again, for the first 10 mins i watched)

got me thinking- he'd be really nice to have for 10-15 mins/game. But totally understand his wanting to go to a level where he'd control the offense for >70% of the game

From memory, I'm pretty sure we finished the game with a lineup of Champ, Wusu, Mathis, Coburn and Smith and they played for quite a long stretch.  4 guards and Champ = No faith in the bigs when the game was on the line.  Telling...  Won't be able to get away with a lineup like that against a BE opponent.

From my memory, St. Francis played a small lineup most of the game and CMA was forced to go small to match their quickness, but we should not let that get in the way of making a blanket statement that the coach has no faith in his big men this year.

If you were at the game, you would not have seen a "disinterested Julian but rather the opposite, trying to take a leaders role at every play stoppage down the stretch.

I know Champagnie filled up the stat sheet, had his 20 points, and helped us down the stretch to the win. But man, I kept waiting for him to take over. He still can't create his own shot. Can't break down a defender 1 on 1. He really just has to score in the flow of the game.
you guys can't be f'n serious - what more do you want out of the kid?!?!!?

1000%. He is hard on himself, he was vocal in every huddle and with his teammates. Disinterested my ass, such an unfair and shortsighted comment on the best player on the team.

Hey Bill, let me narrow the broad brush a bit.  What I said was "No faith in the bigs when the game was on the line".  I referred to this specific game and did not make a blanket statement that the coach has no faith in his big men this year.  Apologize if it came across that way.

As an example, MVS similarly had a small lineup and Soriano did well against them.  In this particular matchup, he didn't seem to have the same level of effectiveness rebounding or scoring so going small seemed to be a good move.  It appears coach thought the best way to win last night was to go small and leave the bigs on the bench, contrary to what worked against MVS.  Did he lose faith in them this game or was it just a bad matchup or an off night?  Who could say? Maybe saying "no faith" was a bad choice of words.  I just noticed it and hadn't seen a lineup like that all season.  I'm sure coach has faith in the big men on the roster...he has to because these are the guys he's going to live and die with.  Hopefully the production improves.

i know the 5 on the floor at the end seemed to be meshing well together and Coach was gonna go with whatever lineup was gelling to win the game.... but i actually thought Wheeler gave us some good minutes when he was on the floor.

Its early, but think he can really be an asset if given a chance to get comfortable. Think there might be a bit of Isiah Moore syndrome coach is trying to coax out of him, where he likes to stay on the perimeter on offense a little too often.

His handle has looked shaky when he starts his dribble outside the 3 pt line- but if we can hit him on cuts and some hi/lo action, he can more than adequately finish at the rim

Late to the party here - been a busy week.  Went to the game last night (which not enough fans did, btw).

Bottom line as far as I was concerned is that too many of our players just didn't come to play last night.  The energy, intensity and effort levels were poor with the exception of a few minutes coming out after halftime and 5 minutes at the end of the game.  Meanwhile St Francis gave 100% effort wire to wire and hit a bunch of 3s in the first half.

In years past showing up with this lack of effort would have cost us the game, so it's a plus that there was enough talent on this team to overcome that.  Most of the credit goes to Wusu and Mathis who both came to play (so did Stef Smith but his game is different, and Stanley who had limited minutes).

I was surprised that Anderson did not go more to the full press in an attempt to get them jumpstarted, he only went to it for a few plays after halftime and that was that.  I was also surprised that he was not more torqued off by the lack of focus and intensity on the floor.

To me this game is a W for those who have criticisms of the schedule.  If you're going to play up or down to the level of opponent, then you may as well schedule better opponents.  I'd rather go up a few spots in KenPom after losing to Indiana than down 15 spots after beating FDU and SFU.  And neither of those teams nor NJIT does anything to get you ready for Kansas.

Let's see if any lessons were learned here and taken into the NJIT game and then carried on to Kansas.

Somebody piss in your cheerios this morning, or are you always jerk off? My guess, the later.

Our star PG was injured, and we didn't have a legit backup in the lineup. Take the crappy win and move on. We lose by 35 to Kansas with the same lineup, so hopefully Posh gets healthy. I don't think the game is as dismal if Pinzon plays, or if this game were played a year in the future and King was available.

Lack of passion is a different issue entirely, though. There are coaches who would un-redshirt Traore if that's a running theme.

It doesn't take long for the honeymoon phase of the relationship with the new players to wear off. I'm not worried. Only loss came in a tough road game and last night was without the face that runs the place.
The main concerns I have are:
1. Posh staying healthy. He missed a lot of time in high school, some as a freshman, and is banged up again. Played with reckless abandon is what makes him special. Can't lose that and still be Posh, but have to hope he stays on the court.
2. Soriano dealing with high major talent. !0 and 9 at Fordham may translate into 6 and 5 at St. John's.
3. Wheeler playing like a big and not a swingman. We need his size near the basket, not 23 feet from it.
4. Finding a backup point that can handle pressure (which we will see when Posh is out).
5. Final concern is that the board doesn't become the "Airing of Grievances" after most games.
