(POST-GAME) St. Francis (Brooklyn), Tues., Nov. 23, 7p, FS-2

Did anyone notice Champy yelling for the ball when Smith was dribbling late in the 2nd?  Seems like Smith does not like to pass to Champy, even though he had 6 assists tonight.

Wusu is a tough, valuable and clutch player - but cannot be allowed to handle the ball. Routinely dribbles into traffic as does Coburn and a few others.

Soriano needs to be told that he either rebounds or sits.

Team needs to understand the importance of getting layups or fouls - especially when shots aren't falling. Stops other team from getting comfortable and gaining momentum.

Only good thing that I saw was that they seem to cover the 3 better in the 2nd half.

I know Champagnie filled up the stat sheet, had his 20 points, and helped us down the stretch to the win. But man, I kept waiting for him to take over. He still can't create his own shot. Can't break down a defender 1 on 1. He really just has to score in the flow of the game.

Which worse 50 per from the line or getting killed on the boards.  Second chance points?

3-way tie with the above and committing 5 turnovers down the stretch trying to protect the lead. Five turnovers all of the non composed variety. Maybe a timeout after the second one could have avoided the last three.

boards
The rebounding was pitiful.

When we made the comeback, we didn't really get better on the boards, as much as we took potential rebounds away.  St. Francis turned it over a lot, and we converted them into baskets, so there were not many rebounds to get.

Making blanket statements about how the team is going to play all year off games like FDU and STF  is so Redmen.com.

great passion here but the level of the way people get carried away at times can  be a head scratcher

I don't buy into the playing down to level of comp theory so much.  Think they'd want to stuff the stat sheet like they did vs. MVS. Perhaps opening game but after a tough loss to Indiana and dreadful showing vs. FDU you've got to have fire in the belly no matter who you play.

Champ again w big stats but watching the game you would not have known it or thought he was the leader.

As Jon Rothstein says....."it's all fun and games until someone loses a buy game".

Tonight, we almost did.  And, with our schedule, we can't afford it.

Hopefully, this is the ultimate survive and move on. Winning by 6 is still winning. We were also missing Posh and Pinzon which made us particularly thin at the point.

The concern I have is that even though we had major roster turnover, some of the “weaknesses” look very familiar. Their is no way to spin the amount of wide open looks at the 3 point line. St. Francis deserves a lot of credit for hitting those shots but way too many were great looks. Defense should be there every night. A lot of defense is “want to”. Didn’t look good tonight.

The second familiar concern is another “want to” and it’s rebounding. I don’t have the final number in front of me but SFB was beating our ass off the boards for a good portion of the night. That is not acceptable. It’s an effort stat.

Like I said, a win is a win. One more “should win” game before the Kansas game. No excuses. They need to really get after it in practice. Play like this against Kansas and we will be embarrassed. Time to pick up the effort level.

Clearly you missed the posts from some of our crack fans who claim that this is part of some sort of master plan by CMA to get the team ready for conference play. We've learned nothing positive about this team the last 2 games. Players who we hoped would be nice contributors(Stanley, Coburn, Wheeler, and Soriano) showed very little tonight against a low level team. I didn't watch the last game but sounded about the same.  Not good.

I did not see past two games, realize that CMA's defense takes time to be effective. But still against poor competition, probably overacted our some of our new players. Big question for me is Soriano, another big stiff, his stats are pathetic.

Soriano is a 10 MPG guy on a good team. We have no one else down low but him. So we need more from him then he's probably capable of giving us. Stanley and Wheeler have given us next to nothing down low. Nyiwe is, well, a non factor. Champ is going to play away from the basket most of the time. We're in deep trouble up front IMO, and Im not sure how we remedy that.
Bigs have been a disappointment thus far.  Jackson-Davis took Soriano's soul, he hasn't been the same since he got dominated by him.  Wheeler and Stanley have had their moments, but both also are not great rim protectors and seem to foul a lot and not rebound well.  Best lineup when everyone is healthy seems to be Champ, Wusu, Mathis,  Smith, and Posh.  If we had Mathis to finish the Indiana game could have been different, I like what he's done so far, been one of the few bright spots since the Indiana loss.

Out rebounded by 15. 50% free throws. It really looked like St. Francis wanted it more.
Of course they did.  St Johns players are watching all the other big east teams play in big time games this week and they are playing in a half empty arena vs st francis.  Its pathetic and can NEVER happen again.

Agreed! Yes the kids should handle their business. But man I know its got to be hard to get up for games like this.

As bad as this game was. The bigs worry me the most. Soriano 2 points 1 rebound, I believe Stanley had 1 rebound w 0 points. Wheeler got some points but only 2 rebounds. And this is against St Francis.
Mathis played well. Other then  his 3 point shooting, Champ had a well rounded game.
Let’s hope Posh will be back soon. But like Monte said, I don’t know what CMA is going to do about the bigs.I don’t see Champ playing the 3 much this season.

Agree those are our 5 best players, but that combo gives us very little low post presence. We'll get eaten alive by teams with even  average sized front lines. Champ does not want to guard big men, and Wusu, as strong and tough as he is, is going to be overmatched against most big men. Still hoping CMA finds a role for Wheeler, but becoming less and less confident by the game. Stanley may be a solid player for us down the road, just don't see him giving us much this year. I believe he hasn't scored a point in the last 3 games, and hasn't exactly made an impact on the boards or on D either. Not sure what the answer is.

Kansas game could be a joke. Can’t see how champ can shoot so bad ,against inferior talent
coach has to earn his money and get this team playing better,or his recruiting was just over rated

I didn't see that, but when he was leaving the court after the game, Champ seemed upset about something.  Anderson was talking to him, and from a distance, it appeared to be in a consoling manner, not an angry one.

The players on St. Francis were doing a lot of yapping while they were building their lead, and our guys likewise during the comeback.  I thought maybe someone had said something that Julian was sensative too, but maybe it was this.

Still, I think this is something we really shouldn't speculate over.  If it's true, let the staff handle it.  If it's false, we're stirring up unnecessary controversy.
