The team struggled tonight but made adjustments and played decently after a very poor start. After three games I see plenty of things to like. First and foremost Anderson can coach and players can execute their roles. The team runs an offense with good ball movement and plays team defense. Individually there are opportunities for multiple players to get pointa and that takes the pressure off of the main scoring options. Heron was off tonight (shhooting 2 for 12), but L.J. really shined after a very slow start. Champagnie was excellent as well and was one rebound shy of a double double. Roberts was really solid also and has developed so much since his Freshman year and is clearly the most improved player from last year's squad. In fact both Roberts and Earlington's major improvement as Sophomores reflects very positively on what Coach Anderson has been doing to develop this team into winners.
The guard play of both Rutherford and Williams was subpar tonight and makes the absence of Dunn a concern. That said Williams is still finding his way after being injured and Rutherford was outstanding against Mercer. Hopefully Rutherford can play to his Mercer game form as opposed to tonight's subpar performance where he turned the ball over six times. Sears played a little bit but was mostly a non-entity, but Caraher contributed a couple of threes (the only made ones by anybody outside of LJ who had five) and wound up with nine points.
For me it is positive reviews for the Anderson regime so far, although Vermont on Saturday will be a real test and should reveal more about the team's ability to compete against better competition.
I don’t know if Roberts and Earlington have actually improved as they were both glued to the bench all year. They are just getting a chance to play and showing what they got. Time for Williams to show up.
Went to the game tonight crowd was sparse the tv guys actually had me and my brother and a few more people move down to sit right behind the broadcast team so it didn’t look empty. Not the best offensive performance Heron just didn’t have it tonight thankfully LJ got on fire. Love champagnie had a really nice game 1 rebound short of a double double. Roberts this year compared to last year is night and day kid put in a lot of work in the weight room! He’s rebounding better , blocking shots and chipping in with some buckets had a nice alley oop dunk. Rutherford had a terrible game tonight they really need Dunn. Team has a lot of fight plays hard and plays together they really need Steere and Dunn but they will play everybody tough!
It's too bad Steere didn't win his appeal with the NCAA but that decision has resulted in more playing time for Roberts and Campagnie who are both taking full advantage and the team will benefit as they will be better prepared for the big east schedule.
Most everything has been said already. Only point I’ll add is we had a few sloppy and frustrating turnovers tonight. We’d play tough D and force a TO, and then just give the ball away. Happened 2 or 3 times on breaks. Given our limited scoring options, we need to win the TO battle by a decent margin to enable some easy baskets. Only forced 2 more than NH tonight, so that didn’t help us to pull away earlier.
On the positive side, this team is fun to watch and easy to root for. They do play hard and we’re seeing improvements with many players. I’m happy with our start and progress through 3 games. Will be fun to watch this team get better as season rolls on, and I trust this staff to get the best out of them.

It is true that both Roberts and Earlington were glued to the bench last season but that said their current numbers (after just three games and in less minutes of total court time than last season) has exceeded their total production for all of last year .
Additionally the eye test reveals to me that both players are more confident, focused and are significant rotation contributors. IMO Coach Anderson deserves credit for both creating oppotunities for them and implementing the system that defines clear roles for them and puts them in a position to succeed. Their success makes them more confident and better players..This type of player devlopment makes me believe that we are on the right road here.
This was one of those games that was needed. Better it happened versus someone we could come back against. NH played like 7 players and survived in 1st half on their made 3's but a team losses its legs as the game goes on and it showed in their 1-10 from 3 in 2nd half. NH ran some Princeton type backcuts that were effective and tried to take the clock down on most possessions, yet we still managed 71 shots.
J and J were the "Band Aids" we needed to hold the game together. If they continue to improve they will be quite a duo in 2 years. Julian actually has a nice shot. Caraher had a great pass to feed Sears inside in 1st half and I think he will be working this with his old teammate Steere to give us a nice inside-outside game.
After the game, Heron was very animated in the team circle at halfcourt. Looked like a leader despite his off night.
Caraher also played well tonight and he should contribute more than expected over time . As already said Champagnie a keeper ,Roberts was solid,Sears only played a few minutes surprisingly. Not many easy baskets tonight in first half.Seemed they were a step slow. Late second half they were able to generate offense from more intense defense, pulling away from a very tight battle. They will need to play intense D every game, no rest games as they will lose a significant edge because they are not a super talented team.Arena was pretty empty, very disappointing .But a good win off a subpar performance. Just shows you how small the difference can be between a win or loss!
If you bring that defensive intensity and toughness every game, you can still win on bad offensive nights. This game was an example of that. St. John's should always have that in their DNA and I love that we may be getting back to it. You fight and play hard and things can turn in a game. You have to impose your will.
Going to have to be patient with Greg Williams. He's lost a little confidence shooting the ball.
“You’re seeing his development before your eyes, and I think in January/February, he’s gonna be oozing with confidence.”
He & Julian impressive thus far. Great to see guys rolling in two man game & not fumbling ball. Guys like Yakwe had trouble in that respect. Will be fun to see these two develop. Better competition awaits, but I’m optimistic about them. Both also have nose for ball on rebounding end of things.

Yeah I gotta say. Coming into the season I didn’t expect to have much of a frontcourt at all and definitely didn’t expect Roberts to take this kinda leap not Champagnie to be so poised as well as physically so ready as a big east freshman. They’re only a soph and freshman respectively and we have two good forwards who are gonna be our backbone next couple of years. It’s very promising.
As moose said and I’ve reiterated many times. We are 3-0 and playing without 2 of our top 5 or 6 in Steere and Dunn. That’s impressive to begin with. Most teams out there won’t win a lot of games without two starters. I’ve seen enough of Dunn to know he definitely provides a combo guard element who can attack and penetrate and score as well. He potentially could be that third scorer that would really offset a bad night from an LJ or Heron.
Coaching has been so much better in my eyes as this offense gets players into position to both score and rebound and players seem confident in it and not confused. Overall I’ll take it.
Vermont gonna be a big test as they’re pretty talented. Fingers crossed for Dunn to get cleared.
I love how hard GW plays on defense and moves the ball on offense. To be successful at this level given his size he is going to need a much more consistent jump shot. YTD it is not impressive. Maybe the back has something to do with it? I am rooting for the kid and his minutes will improve if he can become a scoring threat in the half court game with a consistent jump shot.
things to ponder
1) player development
2) playing time
3) style
4) Coaches engagement in timeouts
This is what will bring recruits to SJU. and CMA is showing what a real veteran college BB coach with an excellent staff is capable of. Kudos to Cragg also for making this a reality. We might not be top 7 this season but we aren't gonna be an easy out any night conference wise.
Williams doesn’t look 100% to me. I noticed it more last night when he had to sub for Heron who had two fouls. His confidence could be a little down as well. Hope as the season goes a long he will look better.
Roberts is doing what I was hoping Owens would do in attacking the basket. His upside looks good.
Julian has a lot of talent as well. He will make some Freshman mistakes but as the season goes along he is an important piece.
Caraher is slow but he understands the game and knocked down a big shot in the second half. He needs to shoot at a high percentage to earn minutes.
This team is week at point guard and could use some depth inside. When Roberts came out UNH attacked more.
If Steere and Dunn could shore up those holes, we can be more competitive then I expected. Vermont, ASU and hopefully Virginia will be interesting barometers as to where we are.
Nice to see that we didn't play particularly well and still found a way to win
Good chance that we would have lost this game a year ago
I know everyone keeps saying that but didn’t we win all of our cupcake portion of the schedule last year? I think we were like 12-0 before we were robbed at Seton Hall.
