The games was over, Nova let down and we (Wheeler) took advantages.  Again it's the poor shooting and missed layups that make it so hard for us to win these games. In this game we got too add injured players to the list of what if's. The missed layups and poor 3 point shooting is hard to overcome At this level of basketball

What you have to remember is that Gillespie scored 0 points and was used sparingly. He is their lead guard who runs the show. Also this was Moore’s first game back. In the closing minutes, Nova ran around like a chicken without a head …..Gillespie. You know what that’s like without Posh. Agree not a strong Nova team but still superior, especially in the coaching part , to St. John’s.

Coburn got a great look.  Not going to get a better opportunity at that point in the game.  

 

Sorry but no.  Coburn air balled and bricked his shots (not as bad as Mathis but still) except the second free throw he hit.  Your hottest player has to get a touch or at the very least looked at.  They had the time to do it.

I had no problem with Wheeler’s three.  The way Coburn shot it tonight, I had no confidence whatsoever that it had shot.  Not the guy I want taking that shot with that much time on the clock based on the situation and his performance.

This team should clearly not be in discussion for an NCAA bid. For a team that was supposed to be good, they have not beaten a Big East team with an at or above 500 in conference record. Even if we were to make a run, our OOC schedule would do the team in. Last year while tge team finished 4th in conference, they didn’t get a bid due to that OOC schedule. When was the last time a 4th place Big East team didn’t make the Dance, if ever? 

if Cragg is cracked up to be as good as many believe him to be, how does he and Anderson allow this to happen? Then again, I have some real concerns with Cragg giving CMA an extension with a few red flags out there.

We were going nowhere this season because you can not fix 32%shooting.,and most of that is on coach since he chose  the players it not that hard to pick a good shooters, what’s hard is recruiting them and unfortunately  that is what he gets paid for and hasn’t been able to do it

I had no problem with Wheeler’s three.  The way Coburn shot it tonight, I had no confirmation whatsoever that it had shot.  Not the guy I want taking that shot with that much time on the clock based on the situation and his performance.

Agreed it was not ideal.  Wusu didn't look for Wheeler early and by the time he got into the offense (we can talk about poor decision making or poor coaching) Nova had Aaron doubled off the ball (again the conversation is smart coaching by JW).  If we can't have a guard take that shot than the discussion is should he even be on the floor.  Now normally, I'd say no, we should have Posh, Pinzon, Champ, Wheeler and Sor on the court.  Unfortunately 3 of those guys were out.  I'm just happy Wusu was smart enough to keep it away from Mathis.

Maybe it's because I wasn't around for 'good St John's teams'.  My memory only goes back to Sealy.  So I only had Sealy and the Artest OSU year.  St. John's hasn't been a tournament lock for 30 years.  In my wildest dreams, I thought we'd be a bubble team this year.  What a joy last year was to see Posh play great as a freshman and Champ develop.  But to think we'd return 3 players and be an NCAA lock given our history ... it was fool-hearty.   If we learned anything from the transfer portal our best bet is to go for players that have been coached up in a winning program but are not getting the playing time they want.  Going after mid majors and expecting them to make a job to big east play in year 1 is tough.  And taking players from losing schools with poor coaching (ala Rutgers) maybe something we should avoid. 

And let's be honest once we punted on Lavin we were never going to have the money to get a stud.  Mike Anderson was an amazing result compared to the other names we could have gotten.  Remember here were are options:

Moser  - Currently struggling at OU
Hurley - Currently on the hot seat at ASU

Possibilities 
Ryan Odom - Bottom Half of the Mountain West
Tim Cluess (yikes) - I think he's retired from basketball
James Jones - still at Yale.  Still going to finish in the top 3 every year.
Paul Hewitt (yikes) - Last head coach gig in college was 7 years ago.

My personal pick was Shaheen Holloway.  I was ready to sign up for a coach that was younger and could deliver a top 3 in the MAAC that's how far we had fallen.


Mike Anderson was a gift.  So unless we can we know we have the funds to upgrade we'd be insane to go through the process again.

I agree that this is a poverty program that probably couldn't attract a top notch coach, but pretty much anyone would be an upgrade over Anderson at this point.

Mathis 1 for 14. Who authorized him to take 14 shots!

He was 0/11 when finally yanked. He forced shots keeping SJ from establishing any rhythm & Mike no matter how short they were tonight should have sat him well before that. Mathis plays hard defensively, but has no sense of his limitations on offense and really hurt the team tonight. Anderson imo often stays far too long with him.

CMA was livid when he forced up a shot from behind the basket. Immediately sent a sub to scorers table. Mathis hoisted up another 3.

He hurt us bad tonight along with a few others including Champagnie who had another tough game on both ends. CMA gave it to him when he went for yet another shot fake early in 1st half. He finally stopped. He hurts our defense with this habit

Here's the dirty little secret about Cragg:

He never had to hire a men's basketball coach in all his time at Duke.  Why were we to assume that he would get it right?

I've always felt that our ideal AD is the #2 man in the Xavier athletic department.  I don't have a clue who that is, but they get it right all the time, when hiring coaches.
