(POST GAME) (H of F) Columbia, Wed. Nov. 20, 7p, FS-1, 970 WNYM

By the time I got home it was 16-5, and we never looked back. Great bounce back win by the kids. Love the continued intensity on D. Most importantly, very solid game by Heron. And I continue to feel that Dunn will be huge for us when all is said and done. He’s a player. Still early, but with the addition of Steere, and the emergence of Roberts, starting to agree that we can surprise some people.
.... looks like my pal Monte is softening up about CMA.
Otis, my friend, I was never critical of the CMA hire. I only said I wanted to wait before anointing him the savior. I gladly give credit where credit is due. He's got these kids playing about as hard any team I've ever seen. And we've got some kids who have been real pleasant surprises. It's still very very early in his tenure, but so far so good.

Thanks to Panther attended first game ever at Carnesecca; last time I was there it was still Alumni and Mike Anderson was coaching UAB in a losing effort against a Marcus Hatten led stj team in the NIT. Got to meet JPM114 and some other great folks as well. Just because no good deed can go unpunished I roped Panther in to joining me for the Columbia Drugs and Society Faculty Forum on Tuesday.
Love his game, his energy and his D,
But Roberts at the line looked scary in a bad way.
Yeah, he won't be on the court late in close games, if we're ahead.

In general, it seems like he has no range beyond 2 feet. Does a great job within that area, though.
Marcellus The Motor Earlington through five games is giving us 9 and 5 in just 16 minutes a game. He never stops.
Appears to have unwavering confidence - maybe too much at times. But, agree, he is a valuable asset and will continue to develop.Wish we could transfer his level of confidence to Williams. Think Greg thinks too much and may be getting in his own way. Although, I saw him being more assertive last night. Hopefully, the start of something for him. Perhaps the “Dunn effect” (potential to lose PT)

Dunn brings something we didn’t have - a player that can get to the hoop.

Does anyone else wonder how we would fare with this team facing last year's team or any from Mullin era? I genuinely think this year's team so far looks way better than any Mullin team at this point early in the season. Time will tell with the real teams, but for the most part, there is no more playing down to our comp. We take everyone seriously. We play with a ton of effort. It's consistent...we aren't left hoping we can "get up" for a game. I would bet that the Mullin teams lose to a team like we have now most games.

And yes, I know some will say, "Why do you have to bring Mullin into it? He's gone now". For 3 years I was one of the most vocal critics and for 3 years I was attacked for that as if I was watching from an alternate reality where Mullin was a good coach and our recruiting was fine and Mitch did stuff. Staffs matter. Look at the surging Islanders with Trotz.

Well last year we still had Ponds, Simon, Clark etc. That said, this team plays a lot better style of basketball than Mullin’s teams at both ends of the court. Rebounding alone would be a problem for last years team. I’m enjoying Mike Anderson’s brand of ball and I know we will only get better as the season rolls on.

As Moose said, very stress free game to watch. Loved the intensity and also like the way CMA distributed minutes to get everyone involved. Good step forward for Greg W., still think he'll be a solid contributor for us as a wing off the bench.

ASU game would be a great one to win, but make no mistake it will be a tough one. They have lots of last year's core players returning. We've been doing a great job on the boards but will be challenged there by ASU. Looking forward to seeing how Roberts looks as ASU has a couple of very talented bigs/shot blockers. Should be a good test.

Last few years we've had one guy primarily who did any kind of offensive rebounding. Bashir who primarily rebounded his misses sometimes two or more in succession so his numbers were a little misleading and then L.J. who basically was everywhere on the court at once last season. In the case of L.J. I even wondered if he was going against script last season to be going after the o-boards. To me the rebounding is fun to watch and is kind of a barometer of the toughness of your team. It is guys scrapping for the ball and in some cases showcases smarts and fundamentals of position and use of body. And we've got guys with hands, toughness and athletic ability that want rebounds. So far Roberts and Earlington are my favorites on this team for those and other reasons. Really impressed with the hands of both of these guys. This has been a pet peeve of mine going back to the Omar Cook days where we've had SO MANY guys that couldn't handle a pass. Champagnie also looks to have good hands. So far this season the passing has been inferior to the hands. The passing should improve with the season as guys are more comfortable with each other and confident in the system, but much harder to develop good hands.

Excellent post

WRT Earlington, I believe his intensity, rebounding, good hands and even good percentage of FT shooting is attributable to the experience and training during his HS football days.

Not arguing just curious how do you figure FT shooting is related to football?

Discipline and focus...but probably those are his internal traits as well

At halftime they showed the stats for both teams. I paused the TV and pointed out to my wife that 10 offensive rebound and 13 2nd chance points are great for a whole game, let alone one half. It really is refreshing to see the effort and toughness.
