(POST GAME) Albany, Wed. Dec. 18, 8:30p, FS-1 / 970 WNYM

Big game. We know our guys will fight. Due for a good shooting game maybe? Heron would help but he’s doubtful. Cut Mannon off. Key to the game. Make him work and make it tough. Keep him out of the lane. We will win if we do those things. Gotta win with tough D!
Agreed Big Red, They have to make Mannion pick up his dribble.
It’s more than just Mannion. I think they lead the nation in assists so we need to really, really disrupt their passing lanes. On top of that they have several 7-footers and good ones. It will take a full effort by everybody.
Got to love the depth and overall development of this team thus far. My big concern is LJ and even Heron having these horrible shooting nights like LJ had last night. In the BE that will present issues. One if the 2 has to be on any given night, imho.
Rather then being unable to shoot , I'm more concerned with Figgy forcing up too many bad shots. It's great that he stayed focused and used some other of his talents however

We suddenly have 3 types of players we almost never have 1 of. In the same year. Almost seems surreal because we've been so lacking in all 3 areas.

1. Undervalued recruit that contributes immediately beyond all reasonable expectation and has star potential (Champagnie).

2. Totally unexpected Frosh to Soph - or frankly, any year to year - leap in skillset, comfort, and total contribution from minimal expectation to core rotation piece (Roberts).

3. Team-first, energy, do all the little things role player that instead of being dissatisfied with that role and looking for other opportunities, totally embraces and commits to the role and the value add to the team (Earlington).

Expect all 3 will learn tough lessons at various points in conference play and that's okay, part of the process. But all of them have the opportunity to be driving forces in improving the short-term trajectory of this program the next two years. All are the type that winning programs seem to have regularly (Nova comes to mind).

I think there is a cause for concern regarding Figueroa and shot selection. He is shooting 38.9% on 2 pointers this year which is absurdly bad for a guy of his size, talent, and athletic ability. It looks to me like he is settling for that floater that looks great when it goes in, but rarely does. I know it is hard for a coach to micro-manage what their best players do on offense, and I know Anderson wants them to have room to do what they feel comfortable with on offense, but I fear if LJ keeps taking those low percentage shots it is going to cost the team some games.

Its amazing how MA has utilizes the bench >Roberts and Earlinton couldnt get off their butts last year, now they are integral parts of the team, Earlington is excellent at positioning hid body. He gets a lot rebounds and uses the glass well.He is very efficient when you look at his stats relative to minutes played. Williams seems healthier , less tentative and played well. This was a nice team effort.

I know it is our fan base’s historical need to worry, considering the last 20 years, but I love Coach Anderson, I love this team, and I’m enjoying this season immensely. We’re not great, sometimes we’re not very good, but we are blue collar tough. We look like Queens on the floor every night. We are...

We're going to win some games we shouldn't and this team will frustrate us at other times, but love the effort. Win or lose, we're going to impose our will on teams. Love the culture/tone Coach A has set. Now lets have a fun game against Arizona and make some noise in the BE.

I'm very encouraged by the fact that the team played so well without Heron, and with LJ playing terribly. I think with another year of progression for the "other guys" and adding Posh, Cole, Wusu and Moore, even if LJ leaves we may be very dangerous next season. Gotta love having a coach who knows what they're doing.
I think we'll be very dangerous by this February.
Screw next year.
I think we'll be competitive for sure by this February, but what I meant was that this year since LJ and Heron were coming back we knew that we would at least be somewhat competitive (and we've exceeded that so far).

I think most around here (or at least I did) figured that once Heron and LJ left after this year that next year was going to be a total rebuilding year. That's what my original post was in reference to. But now it looks like we may have a shot to be even better next year than this year.

That's all thanks to the coaching staff. They've actually developed players, and made the team more about the system they run than the individual players, and that's why when a star player is out, or plays poorly the team still can still be competitive. Also doesn't hurt that the guys they recruited next year have been killing it so far this year in HS/JUCO. I'm excited about the rest of this year, but I'm even more excited about what's to come as CMA and staff build this program up.

[soundcloud][/soundcloud]
I keep hearing about how good the Big East is to some. I am not so sure about that. The cut above teams are clearly Marquette, Butler, and Villanova. Of these 3 Nova has shown some weakness. Creighton and DePaul? Maybe surprises. Not sure I am buying yet. Seton Hall was suppose to be really good but the injuries and poor play don’t make me think unbeatable. Providence is struggling. G’Town has plenty of problems.

I could see SJU around .500 in conference play, Below the top 3 or 4 but I am starting to think a little hype is attached to some of our conference brethren. Not so much for SJU which is a good thing.
I'll say sju is a.middle of the pack team, somewhere between 4 - 7

A team with an identity. Nice.
From the postgame quotes "St. John’s Redshirt Sophomore Forward Marcellus Earlington". When did he become a Redshirt Sophomore? You would think at least our Sports Information Department would get the information on our own players right.

Actually no I wouldn't.

Anyone else notice Greg Williams is starting to play at a high level
If he can continue to hit 3’s look out

So refreshing to watch a well coached team.

Guess I'm just very impatient these days, not just sju but all my pro teams suck as well except the Yankees.

I do think we will be better next year, lj and heron are having a pretty good year, not real good like many thought, cole and wusu could equal them. We'll have something next year that we don't have this year, a true pg, and everyone will have experience for this year.
But im just hoping we could make some noise this year, make the ncaa tourny and get that first NCAA win in 20 years.
