(POST GAME) Albany, Wed. Dec. 18, 8:30p, FS-1 / 970 WNYM

This was an example of our depth taking the opposition out out the game by running them into the ground--even after an Albany made basket we were racing up court. .
Our depth depth looks good against Albany, but it doesn’t versus the BE or high-major teams. I’m skeptical Sears and Earlington with contribute much in the conference, but hope they prove me wrong because that would mean some wins.

Vitale

Yes I realize @StJohnsBBall is too talented for Albany but I am telling you @Iron_MikeMA was a super choice by @MikeCraggSJU to lead the Red Storm . Wait until u see his 3rd yr as he will have them as an annual contender in @BIGEASTMBB

So pleased to see that this team has really embraced CMA's "40 minutes of hell"
Hard nosed, unrelenting defense with tremendous effort - lots of deflections, steals, etc
Also love the development of guys who rode the bench last year
Before the season, I said that this is not a last place team and could be a surprise
Heading into league season, I still feel that way
I also believe that Coach's streak of non losing records will remain intact
Congrats to all on a fine start to the season!!

With the exception of Bootsy hadn’t they all played together at Riverside?
Yes they did
Postell also did not and possibly Grant but the rest of the core did.

Grant played at Riverside and Postell with the LI Panthers I believe.

Spoke to two guys who cover St John’s and common observation was Anderson win or lose is always very frank and sharing post game. Refreshing imo.

I’m not sure I agree here. We saw how much our quality depth mattered against a team like WVU who is every bit as good as our Big East brethren. We will use our bench all season and effectively to keep us fresh. No there isn’t huge talent there but we don’t have a ton of liabilities on the bench. That said, at some point we will get Heron back and will add Steere, and be the deepest we have been all season moving forward. That’s a very good thing for us.

Well we will find out, and I hope I’m wrong and underestimating the talent of our bench vs. The BE.

I keep hearing about how good the Big East is to some. I am not so sure about that. The cut above teams are clearly Marquette, Butler, and Villanova. Of these 3 Nova has shown some weakness. Creighton and DePaul? Maybe surprises. Not sure I am buying yet. Seton Hall was suppose to be really good but the injuries and poor play don’t make me think unbeatable. Providence is struggling. G’Town has plenty of problems.

I could see SJU around .500 in conference play, Below the top 3 or 4 but I am starting to think a little hype is attached to some of our conference brethren. Not so much for SJU which is a good thing.

Agree here. Most of the other Big East teams still think we suck because we are supposed to this year. I think they’ll find out that playing us is more challenging and they’ll have to really earn their points against us. At minimum we won’t be a cakewalk for almost anyone in the league I don’t believe.

The talent gap isn’t as much as you think. Big East might be in for a surprise with the Johnnies! These guys will be in every game.

Got to love the depth and overall development of this team thus far. My big concern is LJ and even Heron having these horrible shooting nights like LJ had last night. In the BE that will present issues. One if the 2 has to be on any given night, imho.

CMA said that we would play hard and be a fun team to watch. A man of his words. We got a little shaky before the first half ended but came on like gang busters in the second half. The transition game was something to see. The defense had Albany rattled leading to many turnovers and how about that 11 minute stretch where we didn't allow a basket. I feel confident now that the meat of our schedule begins, that we will give a good account of ourselves.

The average Big East team's NET I believe is 51, which we're only 16 off from. The good thing about the league this year is nobody is dominant. Just a bunch of quality opportunities (with the lone exception of Providence). We could win or lose any game. I think 9-9 and a BET win would get us into the Dance (assuming we lose to Arizona). We could make the NIT with 6-8 wins. We have a real shot at the NIT, with an outside shot at the NCAA.
Gonna start calling Earlington " Amazon.com " he's so efficient
Very interested to see how Earlington plays against Arizona. They have some big bodies. Let's if he can hold his own and rebound in the same fashion. if he can be a Billy Singleton type player for us that would be great. He may even have more upside than that since he's only just started concentrating on basketball only. He's more athletic than Singleton. Who knows , maybe he grows into an Anthony Glover clone.
Big game. We know our guys will fight. Due for a good shooting game maybe? Heron would help but he’s doubtful. Cut Mannon off. Key to the game. Make him work and make it tough. Keep him out of the lane. We will win if we do those things. Gotta win with tough D!
Agreed Big Red, They have to make Mannion pick up his dribble.
Marcellus making a lot of posters feel awfully foolish after writing him off based on garbage time minutes last season. I an seeing some Cecil Rellford in him. He really plays to his strengths.
Very good comparison in both size and skill
