Porter Moser

The common concern those who have been contacted seems to boil down to security. Mully was the face of SJU, and beloved by all. So when the question has been asked"why wasn't Mully offered some kind of extension?" Answer: blah, blah, blah. Question: "wouldnt it made more sense to offer a two year extension with a lower buyout if expectations were not met next season? Answer: blah, blah, blah...so what I am hearing was Mully was expected to stay next season, and the playing hardball and handcuffing him scares people away. Cragg should of announced they were working on an extension, and then if they couldnt agree to a much lower buyout, or a snag was hit, the tree would be much fuller!
If you think Cragg was operating independently from the university President you are sadly mistaken. Everyone knew that the foundation had cracks. Especially after Matt bolted in a New York minute.
Look, like it or not, our favorite son was the one playing hard ball here. He still had 2 years remaining on his contract. A fifth year was expected of him before an extension was discussed just as with Lavin. Had he been successful in various areas over the past 4 years no one would have denied him an extension. Facts are he wasn't and recruiting was tanking faster than the Titanic. I think those closest to Mully knew his heart was not into it any longer and this was a good time to walk away as if money and security were an issue. Security? Money? He didn't need either. Dedication to the job long term? Going into his fifth year his wife's permanent address was still in California with Chris living in an apartment. Mitch Richmond was half way out the door and was half hearted about his job.
This talk of an extension was a smokescreen for all parties.
Thank you for the paragraphs :)

1) No way an AD in just about any program, no less here, could act on his highest profile coach without the buy in from the University president.

2) My guess is this, and slightly different from your take. Mullin's split family situation was quickly resolving itself, and I know what his plans were when it was - living in ny with his wife. I do believe he approached the school for an extension, perhaps in part to execute on that plan once the next 4 years were in place.

I do not believe the school intended to terminate him after this season. I simply sincerely doubt they would consider paying 6 years of salary for 4 seasons, and I do think there would have been a year 5. I agree 100% that if Mullin asked for an extension it was premature based on what had been seen so far. My guess is that the school outright refused an extension, perhaps made strong overtures of how the staff would be rebuilt, and that under those circumstances, Mullin FELT like it was a termination. If they actually fired him for that request, it was dumb and premature, and just points to the silliness of 6 guaranteed years for an unproven entity.

If it went down like Mullin telling Cragg "If I don't get an extension now, I'm gone.", then I would expect that Cragg and Gempeshaw would be in alignment that they would let him resign.

Now I'll say this: I got a call from the athletic department last week, and one thing they said is that there is so much misinformation because even they don't know how this went down. I would be very hesitant to report things as fact coming out of either camp, and I don't doubt 72 has someone reliable feeding him information, because in this case I believe even each party cannot be believed to be expressing the absolute truth.

He just received a commitment yesterday at his current school.
Bradley's post outlines exactly what I've been saying regarding Mullin. The job was a paycheck to him and nothing more as evidenced by his actions. If he really did have a soft spot for SJ he wouldn't demand every penny of the buyout. It would be like having a close family friend charging max price to install floors or something. The idea is that you give people close to you a bit of a break as a nice gesture out of respect. That never happened with Mullin...with every bit of new info coming out about him, the happier I am he's gone. The NBA guys as coaches just don't seem to care as much...they turn into divas after years and years living in mansions and probably paying for everyone to do everything. Of course he didn't grow up rich in the old-school pre-hipster Brooklyn, but he has certainly been living very lavish for decades. Get someone in here who is established but still willing to put in the hard work.
It would be more credible if you said "Bradley believes and I believe this job was just a paycheck to Mullin" The assertion that just because Mullin has some wealth he couldn't work hard is ludicrous. Coach K's net wealth would dwarf Mullin's and he is still working hard. Joe Paterno was so wealthy he gave millions to Penn State, yet was coaching at 80. I'll go with "I BELIEVE he was distracted by his brother's terminal illness, and I BELIEVE he had a right to visit his family in California without your permission."

No offense I'd rather it not. It would be THE most underwhelming hire by far.

I never said it was just a paycheck to him. I just passed on the information I heard. My opinion was about the school playing hardball on the extension, not Mullin. Sorry if it came off the other way around.

How about the Mike Rice ‘hire’?
Maybe we’ll be coached ‘by committee’ next season?!?
Gotta laugh.
Beast, come on man...at least admit when you were wrong. I've eaten plenty of crow before. If Mullin came back next year and took us to the tourney, I'd be eating more and admitting maybe he knew what he was doing. But you keep defending him and making excuses because all of the tidbits coming out counter your narrative of him. Even Rothstein or some other similar level pundit tweeted out that several sources said Mullin wasn't really invested or put much effort in. Either these are all lies or you're just being a bit biased. His brother was terminally ill for years...this was not a new development. It didn't suddenly derail things like something sudden and unexpected would. He fooled us with his presser. That's the bottom line.

We were let down in a huge way and no amount of excuses can hide that fact. That being said, maybe we should just hire a mid major coach who is drooling for an opportunity like this. It seems all the established big names don't want any part of this mess. I don't think it has anything to do with how Mullin was presumably forced to resign either. Never bought into that theory much...each coach is different. If you don't produce much and start demanding things without putting max effort in, you come off looking foolish. If Mullin really produced and put max effort in, I assure you he probably wouldn't have been forced to resign. There's a major difference between going down swinging and going down looking.

No offense taken. Just informing.

Gotcha

Heard his name pop again over the weekend but when I saw the commit to Loyola was hoping we dodget a bullet. I said I would support anyone but this would be tough pill to swallow if it comes to fruition.

See Tom Bradley's comment that you rested your assertion on.

Moser's reputation was basically built on just one season. The remainder of his career looks.....meh.

It's probably the reason programs didn't jump all over him after that tourney run.

I'm not going to call Moser a smoke screen, but I think it's way more due diligence on the part of Cragg. He needs a separate list of cheaper guys in case other subsidized options -- like Hurley -- fall through. I wouldn't be shocked to see a bigger name than Cluess, but I'd be genuinely shocked if we went Moser over Cluess.

And probably why he was ranked 75th among D1 coaches last December. I'm sure he'll rank lower on the next list...and Cluess will rank higher than 82, given Iona's run, on a depleted roster, late in the 2018-19 season.

He's a Chicago guy. If he puts together a streak of 20-win seasons, DePaul will eventually really suck and probably give him a call.

He might have gotten offers last season, but how do you leave that situation? That was beyond leading your small program to a win or two -- he was a hero. I would have felt guilty leaving if I were him. Plus he had at least three good guys returning. He may have thought another berth was a lock.
