Ponds and LoVett

This thread is emblematic of the insanity of fan internet posting at large, and our site in particular. We were over the moon that Lovett chose to honor his commitment to our school despite the issues of his first season, similarly we lauded Ponds for rejecting the conventional wisdom of going to an established program, to stay home and be a player that Coach asked him to be. But that was soooo yesterday. I hope the boys on the team (if they ever look at this crap) realize that it’s just people that desperately want to win and in our fanaticism look for any conspiracy or excuse for why this program can’t turn it around as fast as the UCF football team. They won 10 of 12 and only lost to teams that were better than them out of conference. Providence got hot when we got hurt and their upperclassmen shredded our kids. Down the starting backcourt on the road they busted their *** against another veteran team and nearly picked them off. The defending national champs lost at home out of conference this year in a huge upset. Arizona lost every game at an invitational. Geez. Sorry for the rant. I’m not a therapist for those on the ledge and I get tired of worrying that our student athletes think all of us live in 85-86

I just asked Braziller on Twitter (paraphrasing) whether he thought the staff was being forthcoming about the players' health and and whether the staff had a duty to report fully on the players health and whether he was a stooge of management in exchange for access to the program. He said

"I think it’s taken him a lot longer than anyone expected to heal. I also believe he’s wary of the knee because he hurt it badly in the past. Once it happened they should’ve been more clear this wasn’t a day to day thing."

and

"And no I don’t think they have a duty. They can choose to give out information however they want."

and

"No, I’m not being duped lol."

I have to agree.

Going to start this post by saying, overall, I think the staff has done fine in their 2.5 years here and I like what Anton Goff seems to be bringing to the athletic department. With that said...

Add this nonsense from yesterday: Lovett and Ponds both didn't participate in a basic workout where the team was simply putting up shots. How do I know this? Because they were both dicking around streaming live on Instagram last night as the team was at the arena. Lovett was streaming live from the arena playing with the FS1 equipment and Ponds was at the hotel, which means he wasn't even with the team. Now, just a few weeks ago Mullin was saying that Lovett was doing "basketball related things" and even last week or so said he was starting to shoot. And yet yesterday when all the team was doing was putting up shots, he wasn't participating. Do you think Tom Izzo would allow a "day to day" injured player to travel with the team but stay back at hotel or to screw around at the arena to stream live on social media while the rest of the team was practicing and working? What about Jay Wright, think that would fly with him? Coach Cal or Coach K?? This is becoming somewhat of a circus and Lavin'esque. Not a good look. If the staff/athletic department is going to continue to put on this front that they are so close to coming back or one of them is even starting to work out, maybe they should at least be able to control said player(s) enough to at least get them to play along with the act and not post to the contrary on social media.

.... It's 2018, no one cares what a college aged player was doing while injured. Who cares if he was "streaming live" on his social media, if he isn't medically cleared to participate. ...

Because it's not what happens on programs with winning culture. Again, the likes of Jay Wright, Tom Izzo, K, etc wouldn't permit that nonsense. If you travel with the team you should be at the arena with the team, and if you're at the arena and "injured" you shouldn't be screwing around while the rest of the team is working. As someone who has sat in on practices, shootarounds and team meetings of major programs for my job I can tell you that none of that stuff would be allowed.

Before you want to compare us to those guys, we should win first. That's just ludicrous to compare our program to their program. Why are you so concerned about absolutely nothing? A live stream during now what was reported as an optional shoot around? Unbelievable. Quit trying to stir up nonsense in an effort to achieve some type of personal agenda. Keep your yellow journalism to yourself. So what an injured player was on social media during an optional shoot around. Get lost.

You would kill Lavin during his tenure if one of his players did the same thing (and rightfully so). Be consistent.

That's lough out loud funny. I was and still am a big Steve Lavin fan. So, no I would not "kill" him or anyone, if an injured player who chose not to participate in an optional shoot around, and instead was on social media.

You are literally a troll. Fake news. You just exposed your own self as having no idea what you are talking about. Not to mention the fact you've ignored the logic in mine and others' posts responding to your nonsensical pot stirring.

You posted exactly 0 logic. Just calling me a pot-stirrer and saying I conduct "yellow journalism" when in fact I never really "reported" anything. My original post on this topic from a week or 2 ago was simply that the inury was either not "day to day" or something else was going on. It turned out to be the former and that continues to be proven true. Staff was telling media he was "hopeful" and "likely" for games 3 weeks ago. They then said Shamorie was "likely" for the game against Seton Hall. If you don't notice a pattern there, I can't help you. As with them streaming on social media during a workout, as I pointed out the programs who have built a reputation for winning would not permit this. Yes, I do want to be able to compare our program to upper echelon programs because thats what we strive to be, and usually culture comes first. There is a reason those programs are successful, and part of it is that they establish a culture that doesn't allow players to be dicking around like that.

If you truly believe that my original comment on this topic, which was that the injury was worse than originally communicated, is off-base or "fake news" then I can't help ya. Have a good day.

I'm laid up a bit right now with sciatica pain that came out of nowhere the week before Christmas and every time I think it is getting better, it flares up again. Physical injuries are tough and not always easy to predict in duration. Let's root for these guys to get better asap and hope that is soon! At this point, have to be prepared to face Creighton the same way we faced (and almost beat) Hall.

Thanks, Chicago Days. Appreciate the good wishes; thankfully I retired last year, so rest is definitely an option...

Small thing, given nothing bad posted, just bad timing. but curious...

Assuming we have some type of in-season, social media policy for student-athletes, is it that it's just not adhered to, or rather not enforced (if so, whose job is it in AD to monitor ?

Shamorie Ponds practiced, Marcus LoVett didn't today, per source. #sjubb

Keep on reaching. You are trying to turn this team into a soap opera, which it is not. Why don't you focus on "basketball related things" and leave the TMZ nonsense at TMZ. It's 2018, no one cares what a college aged player was doing while injured. Who cares if he was "streaming live" on his social media, if he isn't medically cleared to participate. Take off your Inspector Gadget hat, take a breathe and get a grip. Who are you mad at in the admin? Who bothered you, that you are literally fishing for anything to complain and cry about? Pathetic. Very sad.

Great post and reflects on why I post very little anymore. Players are hurt, in the 2nd year of a total rebuild we have a short roster. Deal with it, I will never understand the Mullin hate of so many “fans”.

If you where around such major practices then you would or should know that players sometimes have setbacks coming back from injuries. Hell as a fan you should know that and you can look at any number of pro and college teams to know that.

As far as video chatting while injured while teammates were participating in an optional shoot around and the other injured player stayed back at the hotel. That is just looking for something to complain about and is indeed “fake news.”

Gents, please do not let this conversation get out of control. Thanks.

Everyone is coming at this from the same ultimate place, a strong desire to see this team turn into a consistent winner. I can understand why folks are frustrated by the injuries, and the Lovett situation could have been handled better. The frustration is compounded by the fact that we are not deep (this should be the last year that is the case), meaning any injury to a key player puts us at a major disadvantage. But it seems to me we are in very good hands with this staff. We have 6 new players coming in next year and lots of activity with key recruits for '19 and beyond. We also play very hard and are building a culture by recruiting the right kind of kid (I think the staff learned its lesson the one time they tried to cut a corner in that regard). We are going to get there on our current course, I am sure of it. I completely understand why it is hard to be patient with no tourney wins since 2000. But I really do think if we stay on this path we will see major success soon - on the way, we can enjoy games like this past Sunday, which while a loss, was honestly one of the most enjoyable games I can remember in quite some time. Looking forward to tonight's game, hope we play well and get a much needed W.

Unfortunately, I strongly disagree with your first sentence. There are a few people out here who want noting more but to start trouble and stir the pot. In this thread's instance, over absolutely nothing. They'll be the first ones to disappear after a win. Sad lives. People have too much time on their hands to dissect an injured player's use of social media during what was an optional shoot around. Get a life. Maybe a hobby. Win tonight and said poster can go back to complaining on Twitter.

What I'm really sick of is the negative posts about the negativity of fans, the posts that call other users idiots because they think they know more than the coaches, the ones that criticize fickle fans, the ones that criticize the accumen of posters.

It's a forum guys! Of course there will be some negativity when things aren't going right.

For me, I complain enough, but have seen enough progress with the roster and the coaches to think the ship is headed in the right direction. I see the school slowly being transformed into a very good academic institution. I see talented administrators be hired, and the school strengthening its Catholic identity. I see an athletic department and coaching staff that wants to win badly. It's enough for me, but I understand the frustration.

Could not agree more and especially with the fact that there are plenty on the site who only want to stir up shit, which is all this post is about. Chris Mullin is the Coach and he can reveal what he wants , when he wants and how he wants about an Injured player. He has his reasons which are more than justified which he certainly does not have to justify to free loading so called fans. Again this is a total rebuild job, if you can’t handle it as a fan find another team to root for or come back in a year. I prefer to enjoy the ride and take in the steady improvement and improved foundation being built.

I don't disagree, but to an earlier poster's point, you need to have reasonable expectations. This is a sports message board. By nature, you are going to have some percentage of posters who dwell on the negative, right or wrong. That is how sports fandom works. That is never, ever going to change, so why get so worked up by it? Just read the post, reply if you wish or if not just shrug your shoulders and move on to the next post. I'm quite confident that if you search the message boards of every pro and college sports team all across this great land you are guaranteed to find some irrationally negative posts on every single one, it simply comes with the territory. Heck I've been getting quite a lot of enjoyment lately eavesdropping on the UConn Boneyard and observing those jerks melt down.
