Playing Time - Why?
Everyone likes to see freshmen play hoping that they can get experience before league play. Mullin ball notwithstanding, the starters have yet to be able to put these much weaker OOC teams away so that the freshmen can play. Rutgers was the exception and even there they were relegated to garbage time.
The Cal freshmen played a total of 56 combined minutes. Of course much of the reason was because it was out of necessity and the rest of the team is mostly sophomores but Jones apparently had a lot more confidence that his freshmen were prepared for the game than Mullin had in his freshmen. I also think Mullin uses the seniority system his mentor coach Carnesecca used throughout his career.
The bottom line is I also agree with Jack Williams that the first 5 will be a little worn out by February if these freshmen are not going to see at least 5 minutes in key rest breaks. Of the freshmen the one that should be getting those minutes is Josh Roberts because Clark has been pushed to his limit in every game thus far. I'd hate to see Mullin lose another big to coaching indifference the way he has managed to do with Sima, Owens, Williams, Yakwe and Boubacar. Granted none of those were world beaters but they were all his players. We shouldn't have the unenviable reputation of leading the country in transfers in and out of the program.
Agree, if your not going to play them against VCU, then why recruit them.
Eli Wright, David Caraher, Greg Williams, Marcellus Earlington, and Josh Roberts are contributing how much to the success of this team on the court? That is 5 scholarship players.
I'm not sure we get more than two of them contributing next season either. This is why people were complaining about perceived laziness on the recruiting trail. Still don't get why there were a handful of posters who had no clue why others were worried about it.

I too would like to see the kids play but of course that is not my call AND
I recall feeling the exact way with Louie - he would rarely play the bench - I also recall players such as Mark Jackson, Jayson Williams, Elander Lewis, Marcus Broadnax others who were fed up sitting on the pines and considered transferring or actually did.

Mullin needs to win and win now. If you want to argue that we should be winning these games by a wider margin that is one thing but I don’t see how we can just give minutes to the freshmen in these close games.

This board would explode if a freshmen making a rookie mistake costs us a game.

Elander Lewis started and played a lot during his time here. His minutes decreased as his production decreased. He transferred to VCU where he flourished in a less competitive conference. Broadnax was a nervous Nellie who never adapted to his team mates and NYC and SJU and transferred out quickly!

Well last night was very close to a loss with the foul trouble players were in and you would have thrown in freshman who have played single minutes to date. What if that led to a loss?

I hope he gets them both in the rotation for a few minutes each from the next game through December. We will need them.

I get the argument for both sides. And I definitely would like to see the bench extended . I'm not sure whose minutes we want to cut back though. Does anyone have a potential distribution?

Luckily we won. However does anyone remember Max Hooper against Providence a few years ago? Imagine if something like that happened at the end of the game with one of our freshman and we lost?

Idea is too play them earlier in the game to help keep our more impt players fresher and out of foul trouble not to have them in the game when it is hanging in the balance.

When Heron fouled out, Williams had to come in. So hopefully that will be food for thought the next few games and we will see more of him and Roberts.

Well that was because Rysheed was having one of his many diva moments.

Got to get the bench involved earlier in the game. We need our starters to have some gas in the tank. Louie always said it's not who plays during the game but who is in the game at the end.

Especially since Trimble has scored 2 points in 72 minutes.

Hope they can somehow convince Trimble to transfer out, he gives us nothing, why did we recruit him?
Then maybe the ND kid comes in.

Right on! If that happened the name of this thread would be:

Why are we playing freshmen?

Uhhhh missed the point there. If the freshman came in I think most would say that's why they should have been in prior. Not thrown to the wolves
