Pitino: St. John's Made Mistakes After Louie

I remember seeing a game at St.John's prior to the 1983 season when Kenny Smith, Ken Hutchinson, Pearl Washington (?) and Mark Jackson destroyed the Russian Jr. National team. Jackson wasn't as highly recruited as the other guards above named and some people were disappointed we didn't get the more highly thought of guards but Jackson had himself quite a career at SJU and in the NBA. That may have been the Riverside Hawks team that played that nite. Olden Polynice was in that game too. How could we forget to mention Mark Jackson or was it because he wasn't considered a top player in NYC that year?

Also forgot to mention Eric Barclay

Erick Barkley.

Is that really necessary?

Yeah. I just correctly spelled his name.

If you root for a team, then one can, at least, get the spelling correct of past and present players. That is very similiar to people consistently incorrectly misspelling the name of an all-time great at St. John's. I've seen "Mullens" and "Mullins." The correct spelling is "Mullin."

I'll be sure to take your pet peeves in to account next time I post

He was the 4th best pg in the city that year and not considered a top 100 recruit while the Pearl was either number 1 or 2 recruit in the country ( some likedReggie Williams of Dunbar High School ) and Kenny the Jet Smith was also a MCAA.

Unlike the others, Mark led his team, Loughlin, to a NYS title that year.

Kenny Hutchison led his team ( Benjamin Franklin I believe ) to a title in 1982, though it may have been the City title.

I confuse my years, but think one of those earlier Ben Franklin teams also featured The Truth, Gary Springer and Richie Adams. Talk about talent! Think Stan Diner was the coach.

Class A state title in 1982. Loughlin won state the following year, but in Class B.

Louie screwed us ag, gtown by playing moses over jax

jax even wacked louie on it during his yankee network centerstage :p

Thi ssentiment, expressed many times over the years, is purely revisionist IMO, based on the career Jackson went on to have. Jackson didn't distinguish himself earlier vs Georgetown in the two prior losses, nor did he light it up in Lexington that day in the limited time he played. As many of you were, I was there in Lexington, and there was no clamor whatsoever blaming the loss on Moses. G'town keyed on Mullin and Berry, and dared anyone else to beat them. Wennington for his part always sort ofheld his own against Ewing, but Georgtown contained Mullin and Berry, and no one else stepped up. It's sick we still talk about this game 27 years later, but the season was essentially over when Geogetown crushed us in the sweater game, reversing our win in Landover and then some. Just remember, if it wasn't for Looie, Mullin would have gone to Duke.

Couldn't agree more. Mike Moses, even with the flaws in his game, was better equipped to run the point that year then MJ was.

I thought the mistake was playing Willie Glass over Ron Rowen. The hoyas played a box and one on Mullin, which left them vulnerable to a good shooter from the opposite wing. We won the first game, at G'town, and Thompson changed to the box and one. Our staff never adjusted to that, and we lost the next three games by double figures.

For better or worse, Louie had his game plan and stuck to it. To Thompson"s credit, he made adjustments about mid way through 1st game. We had big lead and hung on for W, but stage was set for next 3 match ups.

We also missed Jayson Williams from these various lists. May not have been the top player in NYC, but obviously was pretty good. I think David Cain is missing, too.

Jayson was a sleeper. The highest rated player STJ signed in that class was Moses Scurry who failed to qualify, went Juco, signed with Tark and won a championship at UNLV (and a lot of other noteriety).

Cain was arguably the best player in the PSAL in '89, ranked 69 nationally by Hoop Scoop but was light years away from being the best senior in the city. That went to Kenny Anderson. Conrad McRae, Jamal Faulkner, Daryl Barnes were also part of that NYC class.

Dave Edwards from Andrew Jackson S.S. was the leading scorer in the city that year averaging over 40 pts. per game. He started as a freshman at Georgetown then transferred to Texas A&M where he led the nation in assists as a senior.

Pass the chili, mustard, and ketchup.... Edwards had plenty of "hot dog" in his game. A heckuva ballhandler.

You may recall that Jayson Williams was 6'5" when he graduated from Christ The King and grew to 6'11" at SJU and that he missed a freshman season because he failed a test at CTK when he wrote "Whoever prepared this test is nuts" or something like if I remember the story correctly.

Was not sure how many on here remembered Dave Edwards. MJ sure would like to get together with you sometime and discuss basketball in person. My favorite Dave Edwards story is during his freshman year, Georgetown beat North Carolina and Dean Smith complained about John Thompson letting that "Globetrotter" guard put on a show handling the ball at the end of the game.

That'll be cool, panther. I enjoy discussing football and hoops. Are you coming to Charleston in a couple of weeks?

I, vividly remember when Edwards was "hot dogging" at the end of the G'town/UNC game in the ACC/Big East matchup back in December of 1989. I believe King Rice was guarding him in the backcourt, and Edwards started playing with the ball like it was a yo-yo.

It was the talk of the day when I returned to school (I was in the 11th grade at the time) the following day. As, a matter of fact, I believe my brother (he was a huge G'town fan at the time.... more casual nowadays) still has the tape of that particular game.

Can't get to Charleston, my wife's birthday is the 16th and she doesn't want to spend it watching basketball, lol. However, I will be at all the games in New York and probably trips to Villanova, Rutgers, and Uconn. Retirement has some benefits. Looking forward to meeting you MJ.

Trick her by taking her on a birthday vacation to the coast of South Carolina. Then, tell her that St. John's "happen" to be playing in the area. I know it wouldn't work, but it could've been worth a try. LOL

I'd like to get to a Johnnies home game this season, but not sure about it. I'm pondering on going to the game versus G'town in DC. I'll figure that out in another month or two. Nevertheless, I'm sure we'll get a chance to one day meet and talk about hoops 'til our heads spin. LOL
