2021 big man Trey James has committed to Iona, pee Rothstein - 3 Star Big

Earlier Zags piece
Trey James, the 6-foot-10, 240-pound big man from Sheldon Clark (KY) High School, hopes to narrow his college list in the coming weeks.

James, who averaged 14.6 points per game and 11.1 rebounds per game last season, decommitted from Wake Forest in April after coach Danny Manning was fired. He is ranked the No. 4 center in the Class of 2021 and the No. 26 center nationally, per 247Sports.com.

Iona: “Coach [Rick] Pitino and Coach [Tommy] Abatemarco stay in contact with me daily. They like how hard I play and they believe they can help develop my game. They want to win a National Championship and they believe I can help them lift Iona to new heights.”
Per Zagoria

Iona best out Iowa, Elon, Marquette, Eastern Ky, Appalachian State..

Unbelievable.[/quote] didnt people say he couldn't recruit at Iona ?

Pitino?
Not surprising
When a person has both talent
AND
a chip on his shoulder
Success will appear -
I see a (more wholesome parallel) with Mike Anderson = talent, proven record, wants to “ show “ Arkansas he can still coach, win and do it in NYC!

It will be interesting to see how St. John’s, Iona and UConn unfold the next few years - just hope we get the testing and vaccines that will shift us back
more toward “ normal “.
All the best.

We all new he was going to recruit great
He got a big pretty quick so
It
can be done, hope we get ours soon

Funny, if we signed him, it would be oh great a mid major 3" ....we beat Elin and EKU, staff reaching. But Pitno signs him and its spun different.

I don't think anyone here would shrug off a recruit ranked in Top 200 overall and Top 25cat position, especially a center originally signed with an ACC school.

Pitino also beat out Iowa and Marquette for this kid
I can't stand the guy but I give him his due
He's proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that that he can recruit and coach

Welp...the "relax Pitino will suck at Iona" crowd should get a bit more quiet today. This is the exact type of player we never get. Like in decades. Pitino goes to a mid major school and gets one immediately lol. Maybe it's because of Iona's amazing academics. Or the amazing campus. Wasn't the kid supposed to be offended that Rick hired strippers once? Guess not.

Yes a Center that originally signed with an ACC school.
Oh yeah, we just had one of those. Maybe this signing will work out as well for Iona as the Ian Steere signing worked out for us.:p

Good one ghost - you got me there!

You must have encountered that crowd on another board, because I don't recall anyone saying he would suck there.

As for the player, I'm sure Pitino will do a great job with him. he is from Kentucky, so that played a huge role in the decision.

Look, it's time we get used to it. In the MAAC, Pitino will likely see the NCAA's every single season. His pitch is simple. We will build a great team in a weaker division, play a national schedule OOC, and make the dance every single year, and do damage there.

To me there is little question he will out recruit us. On the court he is easily a top 10 coach. The only reason he is at Iona is that the baggage was just too much for better programs to swallow. Iona was perfect for him - he wasn't signing up for a failed mid-major program. Cluess made Iona easily the class of the MAAC.

There was just no way this was going to happen at St. John's, and even if there was a chance, he isn't here. My guess is that he will be competitive nationally very quickly. That's all there is to it really.

No people said he would get 5* McDonald All-Americans. Instead he lands another 3*

What would our fans say if we signed the #4 center in the class of 2021?

Beast, he is #4 center in the state of Kentucky, #25 center nationally and ranked #191 overall by 247sports recruiting service. Solid pickup for Pitino nonetheless.

If we signed the 4th best center in Kentucky half the board would say he is under ranked and will be the best Center we have ever had and the other half would say why did we recruit a 3* from Kentucky our recruiting sucks.

Decent looking recruit on paper, but not the superstar people said Pitino will land.

The highlight video is saw looked like Kramer fighting children. He was massively taller than everyone else so his 16 and 11 aren’t that impressive.

Zero chance anyone on here would be unhappy if we signed that kid. 6'10 220+ literally the exact type of big we never get. That is real size at this level. 6'7 or 6'8 185 isn't. Look at Kofi Cockburn. Kid is a beast...THAT is a center. I'm sick of the toothpick build. We need a junkyard dog that bullies people. The talk of "well I'd rather have a mobile 6'7 gazelle" is silly. Year in and year out we get manhandled by teams with real bigs. And when we do get those 6'6 to 6'9 "bigs", they rarely have skill scoring. We almost always have at least solid guards. It's the lack of real bigs that have killed us consistently.

You're implying the guy who has been by far most vocal about how we need 6'10 220+ bigs would be disappointed if we got him?! I'd be thrilled!
