I agree with you, TRab. The "old guys" never get up. Many don't even clap or cheer. I love our student section. Frankly, I wish we could fill up the entire lower section, opposite the benches, with students. Hopefully, their numbers keep growing.

The crowd was quiet because the end result was never really in doubt.

No, the crowd was quiet because other than our season ticket holders, we have quiet fans that quite frankly don't set up any sort of environment in that building. I was lucky enough to get really good seats tonight and I've been in the "season ticket holder" sections a number of times this year. It is quieter than a morgue in these areas. We go on a great run to open a game in which we had to win to stay on the bubble. This is an exciting time for basketball. Not ONCE did our esteemed season ticket holders give our team a standing ovation. Not during this early run, not after holding USF to less than 20 points going into halftime, and not as the clock wound down. My friend and I were often the only ones standing after big players in our area of sitting. For a big game, that atmosphere was awful and quite frankly I don't want to see St. John's fans complaining about the student section. At least THEY'RE loud and they try to set up a home atmosphere.

I was at the St. John's-Syracuse game last weekend at the Carrier Dome. At the start of each half, the ENTIRE Syracuse crowd stands and claps until they score. Even the elderly ones. And you know what else they do?? They get up off their feet when the OPPOSING TEAM makes runs. When St. John's cut the lead to 7 that game the entire Syracuse rose up and clapped to lift their team back up.

I don't know WHY our crowd consistently stinks in terms of crowd noise. All I know is people need to show up and be loud and obnoxious on Sunday and I don't want to hear anymore about the student doing their part in this until our season ticket holders and others can start reasonably holding up their end. Let's be LOUD on Sunday!!

I think we need more tradition, we need more chants, and we need excuses to make people loud. When I was at that OT DePaul game after those huge Pointer dunks to shift the momentum back with us, I was jumping out of my seat and I noticed 1 other young guy was but everyone else was just looking at us. At the big schools like Cuse they teach students the traditions and the chants and all that when they first arrive then those students teach the new freshmen, etc. I think the Lavinwood sign is awesome and adds our own little spice to make us unique, but we need more of that stuff. Maybe like a Lavin's Ladies section or something idk. Just some kind of play on words with outfits and stuff. I saw the Ole Miss fans made a HUGE moving poster of Henderson...I wonder if we could make a huge "OBLOCKPA" sign and have a huge cardboard cutout of him with his arms like 10 ft long. Other schools are much bigger and have the man power to do a lot more, but I do agree we should step it up we can do way better.

The real problem is most schools have student organizations delegated to supporting the basketball team or basketball and football team. At STJ there is an organization called the Redzone and they are in charge of school spirit for all sports. The problem is most of the people in charge of that organization aren't real basketball or even sports fans so they don't realize that basketball should be their highest priority. For example they have as many away trips for volleyball as they do basketball. If there was a devoted organization to the basketball team it would be easier to organize stuff like that. Kind of like Otto's Army at Syracuse.

I still cant understand Lavins love affair w Greene. He played the most minutes of any player tonight, and I do not think it was warrented. If hes cold give him more of a breather. I wouldnt mind seeing a lineup of DLO, Hooper, Dom,Sampson and CO,when Branch is injured.

You need to wait until next year to see that lineup.

Why do we keep comparing STJBB to Syracuse? It really baffles me. College basketball is a sport, and fan bases for teams in all sports grow in proportion to wins. It is just a science. If you are posting on this board, you are not a normal STJ hoops fan. We are the upper tier fans that have followed the team through thick and thin through generations. To expect a packed Garden or Secca Arena full of exuberant and passion filled fans is just unrealistic. It has nothing to do with the demography of the school nor is it because we are a commuter school, that is just a cop out. STJ hasn't even breathed the same air as the Syracuse basketball program for over a decade.

Just take this very board. I have been reading this site religiously for about 6 years starting in the Norm Robert's doldrum era. The population of posters on this board has increased exponentially since Lavin was hired. So has student attendance. You can't ask 15,000+ to pack the garden when there has been 1 tournament appearance in recent memory. Its not STJ marketing's fault.

Its just the reality of sports. A fanbase does exist outside of this board, and unfortunately just because they wear an STJ on their uniforms isn't enough for them to get on board. Show them a consistent winning product (syracuse) and they will show you a packed house full of caffeine laden exuberant fans. We are comparing apples to oranges, pun very much intended.

It would be awesome to see a big mean 10ft Obepka face in the student section with 20 - 30ft arms that stem from the student section into the side sections, looking like he is hugging the court.

Program took awful hit when Lou retired. Upstairs thought they were running Micky Mouse type business. Right then and there we should have hired up. We had a lot to lose, and we did.

Our fans are so old, the leader of the "student section" is pushing thirty and out of school at least two years. A young fan for us is 35. Don't blame the OLD guys. I like yelling things the players can hear form my 8th row CA seats. It's always encouragement or "coaching" (at least I think it is :) )

The OLD guys who sit on their hands at least have shown up for 20-30 seasons in and out without fail. They aren't the problem. It's the 18-24 year olds who are watching from home, and waiting for the team to get better. Do you think Jack nicholson is leading the wave at LAker games?

I ment to say Marco instead of Hooper.

I can sum up what you wrote with one specific incident.

After the halftime ceremony the students started a WE ARE ST JOHNS chant. Nobody outside of the students really bothered to join in.

Funny you should mention that...I joined them but was "shouted" down by the quiet aroud me :)

Back in the 70s and 80s Alumni Hall represented an incredible home court advantage. It was rare for us to lose...I vividly recall being down big in numerous games and the crowd going wild as we clawed our way back...

great point. our student fan base has to be the most pathetic in the nation. at least we're number one in something. if you look around, the true fan base looks like an american legion convention.

at least, when i was going to st john's, the excuse was "it's a commuter school". most of the students i knew had jobs. we're the people who bring the same mentality to the games many years later. you won't see seven of us sitting in a row...shirts off with S-T-J-O-H-N-S painted on our ample stomachs.

one problem is too many young fans spend too much time complaining on websites about how the base sucks...instead of going to the many frats and clubs on campus and getting them to show some spirit.

There are plenty of old guys who were graduates who never show either. The lack of support is across the board. And I'm part of one of those age groups you mentioned.

last night was my third game this year, down all the way from albany again..
the team is 3 and 0 with me doing the trek.
so if Coach Lavin or you guys want to pay for my trains, room and ticket, I may
be the missing ingredient to an undefeated season..
seriously, I was above the fancy seats and did my share of standing and cheering (including at half time, after the defensive strangle for the first 15 minutes, etc. i was disappointed rather few folks stood as the "legends' walked off the floor as well...though they had about one third standing all through the introductions, which was nice.
Nevertheless, my memory of the sold out games in the late 60s is that I left frustrated by the lack of emotion, cheering, and ovations no matter how close the outcomes that we usually pulled out. There does seem to be a consistent, passivity dynamic that impacts the mass of the SJU fan base and it has been that way for decades. Now if i can figure out how to change my schedule and get back there on sunday.....
