Phil Greene

I don't know about you but I thought Phil's offensive performance last night was outstanding. Look at his shots - driving left and right with fade away jumpshots. Boy, with night's like last night, it's going to be difficult not to give him starter minutes next season.
Don't know if Dunlap has Greene dribbling as much as he does but I'd like to see him pass more.
BTW, what's up with our out of bounds plays and erratic passes?

Phil looks so dialed in right now. Seems like he can hit a jumpshot with his eyes closed and he looks smooth as silk. I agree...it's going to be hard to keep him off the floor next year!

Phil is a ferocious player who will have a great career at St.John's.

We are going to be a very tough look next year when we go three-guard with D-Lo, Green, and Branch. Spread defenses out and let each of them attack off the bounce, to say nothing of the transition opportunities they will create. Serious quickness on defense too. "Cat quick" as Coach says.

Kid is starting to come into his own. Great for us. A few more pieces and we're rocking next year.

Proof positive why we should not be negative about kids outside top 100. The next 50 usually can develop nicely and become 4 year players.

just need some muscle :fight: - enjoyable year! bright future!! ;) we are fortunate!!! :silly:

all the best

I agree Phil's shot is very good but also agree he does dribble alot and can be erratic at times. Some of his shots that fell last night were very tough shots and had they not gone in, we would all be complaining about them. It is definitely too much one on one and not enough passing. Fadeaways arent great shots but he did make them look smooth. I will give him that!

With Branch running the point for the most part next season, I think Phil will become even a better offensive threat for us . His perimiter game is vastly improving and next year I see us easily winning 3-5 more games.

I couldn't have said it better. I love this kid. He's outperforming many top 25 recruits and most top 50 recruits from 2011. It's going to be a tough senior night in four years for us.

I mentioned this in the game thread yesterday and I'm too lazy to look for myself but I wonder what Phil's numbers look like before Branch joined the team and after.

I have no facts to back it up but it just seems that Phil really started playing better after Branch was able to practice giving him better competition to practice against

I just tallied them up out of my own curiosity: 11 points, 4 assists, 2:1 assist to turnover ratio, 3 boards, and 1.7 steals per game. On the year: 8 points, 3.1 assists, 2.7 boards, 3:2 assist: to ratio, 1.3 steals and defense, competitiveness, desire, and character that can't be quantified. Nobody is more energetic and intense in our zone. Helluva freshman campaign from the youngster.

Then Harkless will play the center position again.

Lets wait to see who the staff brings in, there is still a great deal of time.
Having said that I believe the three guard offense would only be for limited periods of time.

I would also like to look at his minutes before and after. 1st nine games, Lindsay got major minutes and Stith was playing more. After Lindsay bolted, Greene got his shot and responded, casting Stith into a spot minutes role. I'd blame Greene for Stith's departure, and thank Lindsay for leaving and giving Greene his chance.

When Greene shoots he goes back and up at an exaggerated angle making his shot undefendable.

With his confidence back Greene has shown that he's got a nice soft touch to complement that maneuver.

It's reminiscent of Dick Barnett whose immortal words were, "Too Late; fall back, baby."

Too bad he is out of place there does not really have a back to the basket game

Wouldn't it be nice to have enough players and roster balance to play kids in their natural positions? I don't think it's happened since the Lou days.

Absolutely, good point. Tough to discuss the rotation without knowing exactly what the roster will look like come the fall.

I was just pointing out that if Branch is as good as we expect him to be, with the way Phil is playing, there is no way D-Lo/Branch/Greene will exclusively split the 80 minutes at the two guard spots per game to get their minutes. Especialy since D-Lo is a no doubt 35+ guy even with a full roster, if Phil keeps playing like this he will force himself onto the floor more than splitting the remaining 45 minutes with Branch and giving D-Lo a breather. Whether that comes with all of them at the floor at the same time or not I have no idea.

But, with the way D-Lo and Greene can both score at all 3 levels in the half-court (3, mid-range, at the rim), someone with the passing ability of Branch would have a field day picking defenses apart having both of them as options on the wings. Point guard's dream having multiple versatile scorers like that. And that's before we get to Mo, Dom, Amir, Gift, etc.
