Woke up this morning and we are 14-1. Could not help but smile as I thought about posts on the following issues during the summer and fall.
1. We have had 3 losing seasons under this staff, they need to be held accountable. Chris and his staff inherited nothing. The first two seasons were just trying to get a team on the floor. Last year we were 10-2 coming back from Orlando. Then the Marcus Lovett debacle occurred and we went on an 11 game losing streak. Marcus was our second leading scorer and an important part of our team. However, we bounced back to beat Duke and Nova in the same week. This is a credit to the staff because it showed that through the adversity, they held the team together.

2. Our OOC schedule is too weak. Yep, we did not play a difficult schedule. Maybe, just maybe our staff put the schedule together because they knew that while we were going to be talented, it was going to take time to become a cohesive unit. I worked in Health Care as part of a team for over 30 years. I know from personal experience that when people are added or subtracted from the team it takes times for the new members to become acclimated and gain trust. The first 10 games, helped the staff and team form an identity. Except for the last 8 minutes of the Seton Hall game, we dominated games 11 through 14. The experience we gained from playing close games at Barclays, probably helped us yesterday against Georgetown. The team was resilient.

3. Simon and Clark are not playing as well as last year. Their roles changed this year, and they had to adjust. Marvin is playing the 5, and Justin does not have the ball in his hands as much as before. It took time for them to become comfortable in their new roles. If you look at the last few games, they are filling up the stat sheet and helping us win.

4. Transfers and JUCO's, why aren't we getting the high profile recruits? Our transfers and JUCO's happen to be working out very well thank you. Simon and Clark are leaders who not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. They have accepted changes in their roles over the last two years and continue to play hard. I have not heard any negativity from or about either of them. What more can you ask of a player. They both have positioned themselves to make money playing basketball when their college careers are over. Heron is playing well and probably still adjusting to not being the focus of the offense as he was at Auburn. LJ Figueroa has been all that was promised and more. While you could tell about his offense from his JUCO stats, his constant hustle and defensive instincts have been a revelation. Keita got hurt and those on here who questioned his commitment should be ashamed of yourselves. He has shown in limited minutes during the past two games that he has a role on this team and is willing to play it.

5. Trimble and the Freshmen. They ain't ready, what are they contributing? Williams and Trimble contributed to our win yesterday on both sides of the ball. They both play hard and within themselves. They understand their roles on this team. There has not been much opportunity for the other freshmen to play. Let's just be patient and see how it works out.

6. Matt A. only recruits transfers. I have always hated this narrative. How about Matt recruited the players necessary to get us to the point where we are currently 14-1, after literally starting from scratch four years ago. This is a hell of an accomplishment for the staff. Chris has taken a group of diverse players and molded them into a cohesive unit with the assistance of Greg and Mitch.

7. During the game criticism. Why did so and so make that dumb play, what do they do in practice, the coaches must not be teaching them anything. Some of y'all must never have raised kids, lmao, or your kids are perfect and do everything you say without question. My wife and I are raising our granddaughter and I can tell you it is not like that in our home. She is 12 years old, there are times she listens, times she wants to debate, and times that she listens and does it her own way anyhow. What makes you think that college players are any different. They are human, they make mistakes, they try to do things on their own.

8. Shamorie probably has a higher basketball IQ than 99% of the members of this group. However, posters are stating how he should be playing. Maybe he deferred to others by design knowing that he had to get everyone involved because it is a long season and the team is going to need contributions from more than just him. Being a Point Guard is not easy, but he is continuing to evolve right in front of us. Let's just appreciate him.

9. Chris and Staff. The team under their guidance is 14-1. Nuff said.

10. As I said before the beginning of the season, all I can do is say "The Serenity Prayer" and root as hard as I can for our team. I will continue to do this "A Day At A Time". Let's Go Redmen.

Panther, just one complaint: I wish you’d post more!

I usually post only when I have something relevant to contribute. Never get into back and forth with other posters. Because of all that I have experienced in my 70 years, good and bad, I am able to take an objective look at things. It also helps that my Degree from St Johns was in Human Service and Counseling and I worked in the Health Care field for 30 years first as a Substance Abuse Counselor and after receiving my Masters Degree from NYU, as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor.

What I learned from this is that you have to meet a client or a patient where they are at. In other words, someone who is a high school dropout and has only been alcohol or drug free for a few months is going to need a lot more help than someone with a college degree who has bee drug and alcohol free for 9 months. You can apply this to the situation that Chris and his staff inherited when they got here. Due to graduation and bad decisions they had to start from scratch.

Unfortunately, we live in the Microwave generation where everyone wants instant gratification.

Panther, your post is spot on and I thank you for taking the time to write it. The people who fall into the categories that you mention do a disservice to St. john's basketball and Coach Mullin. They should be ashamed of themselves, but would never acknowledge their erroneous comments. In fact they will be waiting with glee to pounce on the first misstep made by our team and/or coaches.

Very good post and easy to get broad scale agreement at 14-1. But I'd also say at 13-2, and we came within a hair of that, and change your screen name, and the usual gloom and doom would be criticizing just about everyone.

This is a competitive conference top to bottom. I keep in touch with multiple people very close to the program and I can tell you no matter what Mullin is keeping our kids focused on ONE thing - the next game. He knows that the JOURNEY of a winning season is not letdowns and laser focus on the task at hand.

If you know basketball and love basketball, there will be failures and losses along the way. But as I've said all along, this is shaping up to be a very good program led by the right guy, the one Coach C. handed the baton and a worn business card given to him years ago by Coach Lapchick.

Enjoy it. Regardless of outcome this is special. At least for me.

AlBovino, you are 100% correct. I know that we are not going undefeated the rest of the season. Hope that others also realize that the Big East has some very good teams and when we lose our fans can be just as supportive as they are now.

Excellent post Panther. From the day Mullin arrived he had a long term plan.Needed to adjust the plan based on developments. Plans do not always develop in a pure straight line they have dips and spikes. We are now approaching the point where the plan is leading to us becoming more consistent in our performance.

Thank you Panther, for a most thoughtful post, agree 100%.

Have turned around businesses and your comment, meeting the client where they are at, is so on the money. Turning around programs is brutal and patience is warranted. Thanks for your eloquence in this post.

Panther spot on as always. Still a long way to go but perspective is key! Particularly with Ponds I think it’s funny how hard people are on a potential Wooden Award winner smh.

This kid from Day 1 as a Freshman has shown he is an extremely heady player who almost always makes the right play. Truly lives up to his nickname of Slick. Personal nickname for him has been The Messiah!

For me nothing has changed. It was too soon to make a harsh judgement before this season and it's too soon now to declare the staff a success. Of course, yes, things seem to be trending up, which is great.

As far as perspective, maybe the comparisons to the Norm error can stop once and for all. That was the dark ages of SJU basketball and it never makes sense to compare anything to it. Comparing any coach to Norm is like comparing any football coach to Rich Kotite. it weakens any negative case being made.

As long as you watch basketball there will never be another Norm, he was a generational talent at being awful at his job.

Great post Panther. I love this team the staff has put together. What I enjoy most about them is the way they never get discouraged, always fight back and seem to be so supportive of one another. There'll be losses along the way (hopefully not enough to endanger our tourney hopes) but lots of high points as well. Have to like the way staff has hit its stride in restocking for next year. I really hope Justin stays one more year; he is such a glue guy for this team.

Agreed with everything you said, I raised four kids.....

What I don't get is that two of MC's fouls were on 3 pt shots (and both went in). What doesn't he get about not fouling a jump shooter?

Throughout last year and up to about three weeks ago SJU's three point defense left a lot to be desired. Around that time the team seemed to get much more aggressive and has had more success in defending the three.
Not being perfect there have been a number of fouls on three point attempts by SJU players. It would be nice if they could be eliminated but they are mainly due to the much harder effort by players and sometimes you have to accept a little bad to get the desired improvement.

All good points made by Panther. My take on recruiting has been made clear. To get the shiniest of pennies, you have to dive in the cesspool. There are plenty of programs willing to do so. I'm glad this program isn't one of them. Hiring Matt, a master at finding talented and willing transfers and Junior College players, has helped us build a team and still avoid the muck required to land the 5 stars will sleazy handlers. To get the major high school stars that make decisions based on other, more pure, factors, the staff had to show they could win, and develop talent. I think they are doing both just fine at that. Then you need a young man who wants to stay home. Not easy to recruit high school players, but Ponds is a star and Williams has a chance to be one, so maybe we are on the way.

The other thing that matters is finding coachable players that have the smarts and guts to win close games. That comes with finding kids willing to play a team game that stay in college long enough to get better and make good decisions in the end game. Figgy doesn't make the steal, and the headlines read how St. John's is off to a disappointing start, and was overhyped due to a weak OOC schedule. I think the staff has turned a stumbling program around, and that big things are ahead. One bounce, hopefully which goes our way, at a time.

Very good points you make. I agree the effort is there and I love the fact about how hard these kids play for CM! Some of MC's fouls are just purely nonsensical. Reduce those and I'll be happy :)

Great post Panther. Spot on about everything. I’ve been guilty of being a harsh critic of the kids and of the staff when I feel like they’ve underperformed. You would have though that I would have learned my lesson about kids from having raised two of them(23 and 20) as a single parent. “Perspective” is the correct word, and I’ll be sure to keep more of it as we continue through what is shaping up to be one of the most fun seasons we’ve had around here in a very long time.

Monte's one of the best fans of this program I've been around. We're all fans and we do what fans do when do when our players mess up.

I always stay away from the keyboard during games.
