All good points made by Panther. My take on recruiting has been made clear. To get the shiniest of pennies, you have to dive in the cesspool. There are plenty of programs willing to do so. I'm glad this program isn't one of them. Hiring Matt, a master at finding talented and willing transfers and Junior College players, has helped us build a team and still avoid the muck required to land the 5 stars will sleazy handlers. To get the major high school stars that make decisions based on other, more pure, factors, the staff had to show they could win, and develop talent. I think they are doing both just fine at that. Then you need a young man who wants to stay home. Not easy to recruit high school players, but Ponds is a star and Williams has a chance to be one, so maybe we are on the way.
The other thing that matters is finding coachable players that have the smarts and guts to win close games. That comes with finding kids willing to play a team game that stay in college long enough to get better and make good decisions in the end game. Figgy doesn't make the steal, and the headlines read how St. John's is off to a disappointing start, and was overhyped due to a weak OOC schedule. I think the staff has turned a stumbling program around, and that big things are ahead. One bounce, hopefully which goes our way, at a time.
Well-said, Ray. One bounce at a time, one game at a time.Let's go Redmen.
