Penn State, Sun. Dec. 18, 11am, FS1/970AM

What really made this especially tough game to attend was doing so with my daughter, a recent Penn State grad. I expected to console her (LOL). On top of that, for some inexplicable reason, I didn't realize that the game was included in the season ticket package - and bought 2 tickets on StubHub. Ugh!!!

That said, all of MSG knew there should be a time out some time during that run. Just don't understand it.

The lack of defense or even the attempt to play it - is unfathomable.

I'll keep going, but hard pressed to see where the wins are going to come from. Not sure that next year will be much better. Simon and Clark may be upgrades -- but they still transferred because they didn't expect to get sufficient PT.
Literally all of us in 114 were yelling for a timeout to stop the bleeding or at least slow it down. jesus WTF

Also not that it would matter but when you have pretty much your best big man performance last game of the season how do you only give him 4 minutes this game ? I mean he can't at least get 10-15 ? It's not like we are starting Karl Malone out there

Didn't understand that either. And, probably the most egregious, chronic offense is the lack of hustle to get back on defense during transition. Should be immediate substitution.

Ponds Lovett Clark brown Owens Simon Mussini yakwe we'll be better next year
vThats a nice viewpoint but we added Ponds ,Bash ,Lovett and Owens and last years freshman have more exp. and we look no better than last year, which is hard to do,
And we lost 5th year players Johnson and Mouvika,
4th year players Belamou and Jones. Please do not discount experience.
I always appreciate your posts but there is no justification for this performance, They have as little experience as we do and thoroughly embarassed us.

Thank you Section 3. I am not justifying the performance ,please do not interpret it that way. I was merely responding to Richards post. No more no less. We gained 4 good players on paper and we lost 4 very experienced players. There is nothing more to take from my response to Richard. I too am very unhappy.

Pitiful, disgraceful, discouraging performance. Sure we can blame the youngsters and inexperience but how about the continuing poor coaching or lack of. Getting blown away and no time outs. Great having two hall of famers on the bench but seem clueless.
Defense is getting worse, just look at what Penn State did with 5 seconds remaining in the first half. Their kid dribbled untouched and unguarded to score. Typical "Ole" defense allowing the guards to penetrate as far as they want to, resulting in layups or hand offs to the center.. And how about our half ass defense in getting around picks.
Will somebody tell our lost coach to call a timeout to stop the run by P.S. While you are at it alert him to the fact that Ponds and especially Lovett ignored Freudenberg who was open in the corner.
He plays Amad and doesn't play Williams but a few minutes. Did I miss something last week with Williams standing out against LIU?
Redmen, we are in deep sh.. trouble!

Honestly, there is nothing for us fans to be mad about anymore. There is a reason the program hasn't won an NCAA Tournament game in 16 years. St. John's has made just about every bad decision a program could make. And it just continued that trend with CM. Sure, they could've gone out and hired a competent head coach to take over. Maybe one of the Hurley brothers would've considered it. But instead they went for the flashy hire. Despite being a failed NBA executive and having no coaching experience whatsoever, CM was a special name for the school. So naturally, they say "Hey, hire whoever the hell you want." And he goes out and hires 2 great recruiters and an infant. The team struggles in year one because there's essentially no talent whatsoever on it. Coach decides the expensive recruiter he hired doesn't fit the mold anymore, so figures him and agrees to have the school pay an enormous severance. Naturally, he replaces him with a friend who also has no relevant coaching experience whatsoever. Makes total sense. And in year two, when you definitely have more talent than year one, he shows his complete ineptitude as a coach when the win total will probably be the same or less than later year.

Guys, I started to realize it last year and it's really sinking in this year. We root for a completely irrelevant program. Yes, we all have been coming onto this board year after year talking about the future and how things could and would turn around. God almighty, I've been doing it since I was a freshman in college, which also happened to be Norm's first year at the school. But I'm done with it. There's nothing to root for anymore because this school is incapable of making the right decisions. It has proven just that year in and year out.

I happen to work with a recent Georgetown player and he said it best. St. John's has been irrelevant his entire lifetime. They aren't even a factor in college basketball. What they would be better off doing is hire a good young assistant from a bigger program (see Wojo) and give him the keys to the ship for the next 5-6 years and just cross your fingers. Save the money on spending 1.5 to 2 million a year for a name and his friends.

Absolutely. Those not getting back or missing defensive assignments should be yanked off the floor.

Uh....but you might need to call a time out to get the substitution.

Bash outta control not impressed w him

Bashir obviously got away with his head down drives in community college play. But when is he going to learn from all his mistakes. This results in off balance shots and throw away passes. With all his turnovers he should not have been put back in the game. Another poor decision by our coach.

And Redmen.com went bananas when I recommended Mark Jackson for the job.

That 22 to 1 stretch was the game for them.
I simply cannot comprehend any rationale for not using timeouts to stop it or at least try to break our shocked players daze.
We played ok At the start of both halves actually. Not good but no worse than Penn. but we need to adjust faster to shifts in the pattern of what is happening.

"We need to adjust faster to shifts in the pattern of what is happening." That's called coaching, and we don't have it.

The only bright spot in my this game is Ellison's 3pt shooting.

Since I have criticized Ellison over and over it's only fair to praise his shooting performance today. And he seems to be the only guard who gives the ball up to Freudenberg in the corner.

I was at the game today with the Mrs. While she roots for St. John's, she doesn't understand fully the X's and O's and on court strategy. But she knows enough that several times she was just laughing at the way our guys were playing. I don't know if I'll bring her to any more games this year!

I concur with all the comments. And I think Michelle Obama said it best, and I paraphrase her, "This is what it feels like to have no hope." :(

This team is not prepared to play. Neither Game Plan wise or Mentally.

That's on the coaching. I'm sure Mullin has a big Rolo-Dex with mentors & basketball gurus numbers. I hope he uses it. This is brutal.

On the bright side this shake shack in penn station now is awesome for those smart enough to leave the game early to catch the train and avoid the lines at shake shack. I pretty much drive to the city for each game but now that there is a shake shack and knowing that most likely I'll have to walk out of games early during blowouts this could become my new post game routine

I suspect I will bump into you a few times on express escalator going down at at the 15 minute mark of second half of a number of BE games. :)

Shake Shack once saved me from serious distress. I was at a game at Citifield about 4 years ago, and it was about 104 degrees at game time. I was going to go to first aide, feeling dizzy from the heat. Instead I got a vanilla shake at Shake Shack and felt great within minutes. It was so hot, the players actually get the game under 3 hours. Shake Shack should call me to do a commercial for them. For SJU fans, a burger and the shake of the week will be the only thing to look forward to when heading to a game at MSG.

Those shakes are real good. I was strictly in a cannibal slam some burger mood today

Next game I'm going to finally try one of those mushroom burgers. I think I will just get one of each because I always feel like of I don't get the regular burger that I'm going to be missing out on something special

Very discouraging. It's not the wins and losses so much as it is the trajectory.
