Old SJU games on youtube

Just watched the first ten minutes. Damn, David Cain was niiicee! Did he show any flashes he's first 3 years?

I, actually thought he played okay his junior year whenever he got into the game. But for the most part, I thought he wasn't gonna do much of anything his senior season. I thought we were gonna be bad that particular season, as well. But Cain and the season turned out to be a success. Cain was a monster his senior season. Quite surprising.

I recall this team losing to Fordham at home and getting blown out on the road against a very, good Indiana squad. I believe this team played Kentucky in the Holiday Festival, if I'm not mistaken. It seemed the team turned it on once they got into Big East play (although, they lost a very, close Big East game in December versus UConn on the road).

As, far as the Arkansas game.... I remember this game well. I believe I was able to see half of the first half before my local affiliate switched over to a game that featured a team that was close to my region. So, I started watching some show, but kept turning it back to the game to check up on the score.

It's been 20 years, so my memory is a tad foggy, but I recall the Johnnies winning throughout most of the game before relinquishing the lead late, and losing in the end. I remember being ticked at Mahoney for not trying to extend the game (my local affiliate showed the final 5 or 6 minutes of the game). I was livid, as we had Arkansas on the ropes but couldn't finish the game.

This was Mahoney's last time in the sun (other than landing Lopez, Hamilton, and Turner), as he was fired after the '95-'96 season.

They played a top 5 Kentucky team with POY candidate Jamal Masburn very well in the Holiday Fest before being overcome - I think frosh Rowan Barrett killed the team at the line. Really turned the season around.

It just goes to show you how important an elite PG is. If Mahoney had gotten Ed Cota or Shammgod Wells, he may have lasted much longer. Mo Brown and Tarik Turner were his downfall.

We broke Kentucky's press so easily with long passes, but we kept missing open bunnies if I remember correctly. Mash was leading the nation in scoring going in, and we held him to like 6, dropping him way down. Pitino looked like he was going to have a stroke.

I also remember Rutgers trying to press Kentucky in the same tournament, with laughable results.

I remember certain aspects of this game well. This was the 40 minutes of hell and the "cut off the head and the body will follow" strategy of Nolan Richardson. His whole defensive strategy was geared to stop Cain and force others to beat him. It really didn't work, but we failed to capitalize. As some of you said, we had this game, but coached and played our way out if it. What a shame.

Pretty sure Mo Brown was NYC POY coming out of HS. Wound up that he was not a Big East level talent. Not sure that he was even a D1 talent. Short, slow and with no outside shot.

He averaged 30+ ppg at Grady. Looking at him, he was nowhere near 5'10". He really looked about 5'6" to me.

Not an old game, but this video (which aired in between games during the 1986 Final Four) shows Walter Berry being named as the Chevrolet Player of the Year.

The interesting stuff begins at around the :30 mark.

The Truth!

A third attempt by this person to get the Arkansas game uploaded correctly (for those of you who still have not watched it). No commercials this time:

Unfortunatly, no, but he took down the other videos, so I feel the need to recopy and paste.

Seriously, this guy should be given full credit for his work.
