Old SJU games on youtube

January 1999 "Bootsy Thornton game" vs. Duke. Unfortunately, it only takes us until 1:11 remaining in the second half, so you don't get to see Artest's 3-pointer to tie it (my guess is that this guy ran out of tape, because the game went so long thanks to refs).

Great Video's. Thanks for posting!

Your welcome Andrew, but full credit should go to the person/people who upload this stuff. I just have no life, and therefore have time to look and see if these games are on there.

I have this game on tape. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to record OT due to the local team receiving precedent over any, other games.

South Carolina were playing Syracuse that particular day, and the local network affiliate switched to the start of their game when our game versus Duke went into OT. I had to turn on my PC and log onto the CBS sports radio network to listen to overtime.

I was able to view overtime of this particular game several years later on CBS Sports Network.

Hey MJ,

Ever upload the video on a pc? I would love to have it in my collection, i was a kid when i attended the game, its still probably the best game i have ever been to. even though we came out on the losing end.

1993 ncaa tournament second round loss to Arkansas. Yeah, the game was a disappointment, but this team still provided all of us with an entertaining year:

Looking at the starting lineup twenty years later, that was a slow team.

It's haunting to hear them say "St. John's with a very deep team" that went on to win 1 game in the tourney. We are so overdue for a deep run and we now have the horses. Let's do this.

Yes, but that team didn't do too badly for a squad that was picked by the coaches to finish 9th in the 10-team Big East preseason. We did use our depth to our advantage much of that year, it just was not a factor against Arkansas, because they could match it.

Yes, except for the coach, Brian Mahoney. Couldn't believe he didn't attempt to press in the second half. This helped his exit from coaching at St.John's.

Actually, I think he got a big contract extension after this year. The team was not expected to do anything that year.

Unfortunately, we lost Cain to graduation, and didn't have any capable point guards to replace him.

The fact that this season starts in a little over a month and we are on here reminiscing about the 'good ole days' and discussing games/plays/calls that took place 20+yrs ago pretty much sums up where we are as a program. Do you think the duke's and kentucky's are talking about 20yrs ago? No, they are only worried about the present and future, which is what we really need to be doing....

I do not think the two are correlated at all. Seeing Charles Minlend in a video brings back great memories and it always will. I hope we make more great memories this year and that I am alive in twenty years to smile about them.

7:50 still remains one of the best SJU plays I've ever seen.

And remember they were playing a Razorback team that would go one to win it all next year, and runner-up the year after.

Just watched the first ten minutes. Damn, David Cain was niiicee! Did he show any flashes he's first 3 years?

I, actually thought he played okay his junior year whenever he got into the game. But for the most part, I thought he wasn't gonna do much of anything his senior season. I thought we were gonna be bad that particular season, as well. But Cain and the season turned out to be a success. Cain was a monster his senior season. Quite surprising.

I recall this team losing to Fordham at home and getting blown out on the road against a very, good Indiana squad. I believe this team played Kentucky in the Holiday Festival, if I'm not mistaken. It seemed the team turned it on once they got into Big East play (although, they lost a very, close Big East game in December versus UConn on the road).

As, far as the Arkansas game.... I remember this game well. I believe I was able to see half of the first half before my local affiliate switched over to a game that featured a team that was close to my region. So, I started watching some show, but kept turning it back to the game to check up on the score.

It's been 20 years, so my memory is a tad foggy, but I recall the Johnnies winning throughout most of the game before relinquishing the lead late, and losing in the end. I remember being ticked at Mahoney for not trying to extend the game (my local affiliate showed the final 5 or 6 minutes of the game). I was livid, as we had Arkansas on the ropes but couldn't finish the game.

This was Mahoney's last time in the sun (other than landing Lopez, Hamilton, and Turner), as he was fired after the '95-'96 season.

In his first three years, he didn't get much time and, as a result, didn't get the chance to show many flashes. He was an awkward-looking, undersized player without an outside shot, and fans would typically groan when he came into a game off the bench. But that was under Louie; under Mahoney, as a senior, he was handed the job and he turned out to be a gem. Penetrate and dish; penetrate and dish. That was his game, and he excelled at doing it. One of the best ever at doing it.

Totally agree with you about Mahoney refusing to foul at the end of the game when Arkansas would have been in 1 and 1 situations and could have missed some foul shots. What was particularly galling was Mahoney's response to a post game press conference question asking him why he didn't try fouling. His response was "hey, do you know any 6 point plays"!

He also landed Roshown Mcleod who he subsequently misused for 2 years before McLeod transferred to Duke.

That's right! I had forgot he landed McLeod. He also landed Postell prior to being fired.
