St. John's v. Duke, November 1985 (2 parts)

St. John's at Georgetown, January 1985

We thank this person for his/her effort. The library is new, and ever expanding, so be on the lookout for more.

I remember both of these games quite well.

By the way, the semifinals of that particular preseason NIT ended up being the NCAA Tournament Final Four teams minus the Johnnies.

figures...if i remember correctly, we beat louisville in the consolation round and they went on to win the national championship. we have the worst kharma of any team in america.

btw...can stuff on you tube be downloaded?

Just watched the first half of the St J-Duke 85 pre-season NIT game. Can you believe the ridiculous charging calls with Duke players setting up past the basket or right under it and St J's players having wide open to the basket and being called after the shot and just about heading back down court. I was right more than I thought in blaming Mike K for coaching that garbage and lessening a great sport. At least now you have to set up out front and away from the basket but you still hear many commentators saying there needs to be less charging calls made in the game. Why take away great athletic plays with majestic drives to the rim just because some dope is just standing there with his thumbs up his butt-that's not playing defense and as Lou Carnessecca used to scream out THAT'S NOT BASKETBALL! Thanks a lot rat face!

I was thinking the same exact thing while watching the first half of that game. I only could remember Berry having a big game, but forgot all about those bogus charge calls. I was sitting here laughing and shaking my head at those crappy calls. I'm glad it's changed (those particular calls) since that time, but ridiculous, nonetheless.

LOL

I also said to myself, "Coach K practically tinkered with the game in a poor form by having his guys flop all over the place," while watching the first half. I recall a couple of years after this game (around the time I was in high school), and being very annoyed with Duke and the charging (whether, it was a legit or 'flopping') calls. This is also around the time where Duke really started their dominance on the collegiate hoops scene. I'm also willing to bet this is the time where they also started getting a bunch of charging, errrr, flopping calls.

Yes, if you have real player installed (for windows) you should be able to download, also there is free youtube video download software . a google search for that should help.

Agreed, this was one I watched a few months ago. I went to school with these guys and was at that game, so it brought back many great memories. Those games were a lot of fun. Crowd was always rocking.

Agree that duke got benefit of charging calls but i thought the refs really were fair in most of their calls . i loved it when the ref told coach k to get off the sideline and move back . i dont think mark jackson had 1 turn over in that game . that was the thing that always impressed me about his game .

Nice to have you on my side Dink Man! Recently watched the 1973 Knick Laker game 5 for the NBA C on MSG the Vault and there was not the need for even one block charge call. Dr. J would foul out in the first quarter because he took off 15-20 ft from the basket and in todays game some slug would just stand there and J would come down from the heavens and crash into him for an offensive foul. Big reason scores are down because it is very tough to attack the rim. I would never call a charge if i was the ref - call it on the guy falling down and step on his face on your way to the scorer's table.

One thing that's truly sad about watching these flicks is what Looie did to Shelton Jones. Talk about destroying a kids career. Shelton had the skillset to play the point (ala Magic Johnson) or be developed at a 2 guard. Looie saw his height, ignored his skill set and played him at power forward. Had this young man gone to another program with a more open minded coaching staff, who knows what heights he would have achieved in his basketball career.

I had the pleasure of meeting Shelton a few times and he was the nicest kid. When I brought my then young son of 6 to a game once, having arrived early on campus, Shelton took my son for a ride around the campus in his car. My son still remembers that to this day.

Does anyone have the duke St. John's game from 2000? The last non conference team to beat duke at Cameron indoor . That should be on YouTube .

I would also like to see the St Johns vs Dke game where Hatten stole the ball and was fouled with no time left, and then hit a free throw to win it. Not sure of the year?

I'll say it again Mark Jackson did not turn the ball over . He went in when Moses got hurt and did a great job . I thought I heard the announcers in this game say that St johns had no turnovers well into the second half . i saw one turnover very late in the game . i wonder if louie and the staff thought about giving Mark more time in the next game . I don't think he saw much time in the Final 4 .

many thanks!!!

January 1999 "Bootsy Thornton game" vs. Duke. Unfortunately, it only takes us until 1:11 remaining in the second half, so you don't get to see Artest's 3-pointer to tie it (my guess is that this guy ran out of tape, because the game went so long thanks to refs).

I have this game on tape. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to record OT due to the local team receiving precedent over any, other games.

South Carolina were playing Syracuse that particular day, and the local network affiliate switched to the start of their game when our game versus Duke went into OT. I had to turn on my PC and log onto the CBS sports radio network to listen to overtime.

I was able to view overtime of this particular game several years later on CBS Sports Network.
