Official 2014-2015 Schedule Thread

Of course, we had already heard about this, but here's the school making it official:

No need to get there early.

LOL. As soon as Tulane got thrown in there, all sh*t hit the fan.

Home and home with Tulane usually involves an out of conference game in NOLA the week before Mardi Gras.

Some more tweets on the non-conference schedule, per Jon Rothstein:

‏@JonRothstein Fourth team in St. John's Preseason NIT pod is expected to be LIU, source told @CBSSports. Stony Brook, Saint Joseph's also in 4-team field.

LIU stunk last year (after 3 straight great years), so I'm guessing they will be our first round opponent.

Wow!! Somebody f'd this thing up big time!!
I would think that it would be very difficult to recruit 8 more teams to participate at this point

Last year, they didn't announce a field until September, and needed to get two division 2 teams to fill it out.

IMO, 16 teams is too much for a preseason tournament. They should consider going to 8, and play the whole thing at MSG, with a format similar to Maui, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and all those other tournaments (guaranteeing three games for all). Tough to do at an NBA/NHL arena obviously, but probably could be done.

It would make sense that we would be OK with just about any format change, as long as the four guaranteed games remains intact. We'd get 4 metro area games either way. Even if the field filled up, and we somehow missed out on MSG, we'd host consolation round games at CA. So, as long as the 4 guaranteed games stay intact, we really have the least to lose.

Would suck for the consumer though, because we'd have to pay extra, more expensive tickets, for 3 msg games instead of 2, but that is probably unavoidable at this point.

If you're right, that should be everything. Would be 13 games, plus 18 in the conference = 31 game schedule. Only thing probably holding up an official announcement is the NIT being in flux.

First I heard about playing FDU, but here is confirmation:

I like this non conference schedule - a few headliners, locals, and balance in strength of schedule. Hope we can use it to our advantage. Let the planning for NY trip to watch us take on Duke begin!

It will be interesting to see how the NIT shakes out. If what I remember is correct then there is a chance we will get to play 3 games against Minn, zaga, and Georgia. Am I wrong about this? Plus a game against possibly St. Joe's at Carnesecca. If we do play St. Joe's at home then a home slate of out of conference games that includes St. Mary's, Long Beach State, and St. Joe's is a pretty good trio of games to be held at Carnesecca.

I think St. John's should look to continue to schedule more quality mid major opponents such as St. Mary's, George Mason, Dayton and play them at Carnesecca. Those games have a buzz, and they feel like home games. Once we get on a roll than the MSG games will feel like home games too.

The whole NIT schedule sounds like it's still up in the air.

Gonzaga waiting on NIT to work out scheduling
July 21, 2014

The NIT Season Tip-Off is in flux and it has put Gonzaga in a scheduling bind.

The Bulldogs hope the tournament can still work out under a less-than-ideal format but they’re keeping their options open, athletic director Mike Roth said.

Gonzaga originally committed to the late November tournament as one of four host teams with Georgia, Minnesota and St. John’s. If Gonzaga won two home games it would advance to Madison Square Garden in New York for the semifinals and championship/consolation.

But the NIT has struggled to fill out the 16-team field and proposed one home game followed by three games in three days at MSG, one of those a guarantee game between the semis and the championship/consolation.

Gonzaga, Minnesota and Georgia understandably balked at the idea. It wasn’t an issue for St. John’s as it basically amounted to four home games.

“The NIT told us last week, ‘You’re right, we’ll get this fixed,’ ” Roth said. “It’s a week later now and it’s not fixed yet so I’m starting to get a little more concerned.”

A potential compromise is one home game for host schools and two at MSG (semifinals and championship/consolation).

“Ultimately that’s better than what they’re proposing,” Roth said. It’s less than ideal because “we’ve worked the rest of our schedule around having two home games.”

The Zags could walk away from the NIT, Roth said, “but in the third week of July trying to find some games to fill in is nearly impossible.”

Gonzaga is still trying to finalize an opponent for the annual Battle in Seattle.

“Every time we think we have it done something falls through,” Roth said. “Right now we want to focus on the NIT being fixed and then we’ll come up with the Battle in Seattle.”
